  1. Greysmom, totally agree with everything you said. -- I say this to some people sometimes. I have taken my dog to about 11 vets in six years (which is ridiculous). One I would have stayed with but she retired much to many people's dismay. You do need someone who will work with you. We are going back to the vet today -- she wants to do a recheck at "no charge". She is a nice person but does she know enough about greyhounds? So will see what comes out of it. Thank you all for responding -- I am very thankful.
  2. My experience with the three greyhounds I have had none of them had/have "prey drive". They might chase squirrels but would not catch them and eventually gave up on them.
  3. Not too late! Thank you for this. I do not feel comfortable with many drugs vets throw at our dogs. I did try again but she does not look good (very sad) and not eating and panting still. So will stop them again. She does have GI problems since I got her sic years ago. The adoption people have not been helpful. Many people I meet are feeling really unsure of the veterinary world. This may not sound fair but I lost two because of drugs and anesthesia. My heart still aches. Will suggest codeine with the vet this week.
  4. Your replies are very helpful. Perhaps will try tramadol one more time and see. Like you say, it depends on the dog. Thank you.
  5. Hello Everyone... Any help would be appreciated. The vets here in Ontario we have taken our dog do not seem to understand greyhounds. Our sweet dog came from Florida a few years ago and always was difficult to feed. Now she really needs a dental which will be scheduled. In the meantime the vets just wanted to prescribe antibiotics and gabapentin. The gabapentin she could not handle so now it's tramadol which makes her nervous and will not eat properly again. My understanding that this drug is not very effective in the first place and can have adverse effects on greyhounds? We are so worried about her. Has anyone had adverse effects from tramadol before I contact the vet tomorrow. Thank you so much.
  6. Yes, I agree about x-rays and that was one reason I did not go there. Thanks to Tracy on the forum, she wanted me to go to OSU with my previous girl. Our dollar was higher than the US$ at that time but not now, plus we have the pandemic issues. We could drive down there in a day. The only thought I had was if something went wrong I would need to get her back across the border. Anyway, you gave me an idea. I should call the Guelph University here and see what they are up to. Thank you!
  7. Thank you everyone for your replies. Yes, there needs to be extractions -- the back molars in particular. I have been to many vets with my dog since I got her six years ago. The the one before this one said she did not need extractions! But she does. I had two greyhounds before and spent so much money trying to save them. My girl had three dentals but nothing as high as $3000. Trying to find a good vet here seems to be impossible, especially one who understands greyhound sensitivities and having to put them under. The pandemic has increased their business and the fact that you cannot stay with your dog on the first visit makes it more difficult. As a final note here is one vet who has done dentals for 20 years (no greyhound patients) who would be more reasonable but she does not have an xray machine which I felt was important? Anyway, thank you all for your input. I really appreciate it.
  8. I'm so sorry to hear this news. It must have been devastating.
  9. Yes, this was a regular vet. Says she knows greyhounds but I do not think she does. I think people should know to stay away from this clinic. We are located in Toronto Canada.
  10. Has anyone had a quote for a dental as high as $3000 plus bloodwork charge? Also are we allowed to disclose vet's names on Greytalk who are out of line?
  11. Hello everyone, Does anyone know a really good greyhound savvy get in Ontario. I have taken my beautiful greyhound to multiple vets in the last six years with no results. Anyone know Pyne Hills vet in Tottenham -- one hour from Toronto. Any help would be appreciated. She really needs a dental with some extractions urgently. Thank you so much.
  12. We have followed you for a long time. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SWEEP!!! Thank you for the beautiful pictures.
  13. Does anyone use coconut oil on their dog's teeth. Someone recommended this would be a good idea.
  14. Hello Everyone, We are looking for a greyhound savvy vet in the Toronto, Canada GTA. It seems to be getting more difficult to find a vet these days. Many of the good ones have retired. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
  15. My first dog was a scent hound and a complete handful with a will of iron. He was very food oriented and would do all kinds of tricks. Then I adopted my first greyhound who was completely different and she was so sweet and all I had to do was "show" her. I felt that she had already given enough to humanity and did not demand anything from her. I just showed her the way and she taught ME a lot and brought peace into my life. If I did train her it was only things that would keep her safe. And that went for my boy when he came and the girl I have now. I had and have wonderful relationships with them all. They are gentle peaceful beings
  16. Hi Lukasmom. We are in Canada so they referred me to a company here. I had some from before and they say honey does not expire? Hope they are right. The price has doubled here for this stuff! racindog might have the right answer. Looks like the first one that comes up on the site might be best. My dog's paw is worse than I thought. the cut is way across the top pad and the one on the side of her foot. Hope there is an answer for both our questions soon.
  17. Thanks you for all your replies. Manuka honey it is! This greyhound's most happy time is running so she will not not be happy for a while. Thanks again!
  18. Hello everyone.... Three days ago my girl sliced her paw running in the snow. We have been treating it by cleaning and using antiseptic changing bandages daily. It appears to be improving very slowly. Does anyone know how long it will take to heal. My previous experience has been about a month. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
  19. Thank you, Dick. Will find a picture that might work. Then figure how to upload it!
  20. My beautiful kind boy (not like the picture in Greyhound Data) RJ's Roy M shows Pilot and Luxury (dam). His name was Bengal and passed away in 2015. Gable Dodge also shows as his sire.
  21. Thank you both for your replies. It could be a muscle issue. I was reading something about deep pectoral muscles which seem to be attached to the shoulder and spine muscles so this might be what we are dealing with. She loves to run and goes crazy sometimes. Will get some pain meds as suggested and hopefully it will heal.
  22. My greyhound has been having pain and yelping a few times for a couple of days when getting up and changing some positions lying down. After checking her over a few times it appears the pain is on her chest(?) beside the inside of her left leg. Not sure if there is any swelling and thinking it could be a muscle issue. Have tried to find other posts regarding issues with this location of their body. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.
  23. I'm sorry about that. Don't know what I was thinking! Was not thinking in fact!! Nothing should change on my account -- is that OK?
  24. Thank you both for your input. I feel much more relieved and have faith in what the vet said.
