  1. So sorry for your loss. He sounds like a wonderful man and a good friend to people and hounds alike. I am trying to picture the Bridge and, in my mind's eye, it's a beautiful thing tonight!
  2. I remember Wally being at one of the runs! This particular picture was taken July 10, was he still there?
  3. I bought it (4 oz. gel) but I haven't tried it yet. The bottle doesn't actually tell me how to use it, other than "no food or water for a 1/2 hour before and after application" and that I should also brush every 3 days. All it says it to "apply" it preferably at bedtime and gives the dosages where I conclude I use 1 tsp. Can you tell me how you are doing this? And OMG, how do you remember? When bedtime arrives, I'm sure not going to start with something like this. Plus she gets a cookie about 30 seconds before she gets on my bed! -- so that's already contrary to the instructions. Thanks!
  4. Yes, that's some of the members of the SSG. I took the picture some time this year but I don't have the exact date handy. I believe like you, if the people are all responsible and attentive and handle things correctly, the larger number is not a problem. The very second that something starts to look or feel fishy, someone (if not everyone) is on it. If everyone stood around yakking and ignoring them all, that would be a very bad thing and I wouldn't go. As it is, I find the SSG is beautifully run and well monitored. Your group looks like they're having a great time, too! GO GREYHOUNDS! I will NEVER forget the first time the group ran towards me and then split and went past... the look on their faces, the flow of their bodies, the literal shaking of the earth... it was glorious!
  5. And here I thought they would just dive in to raw food and gobble it up! Guess not!
  6. That's right, I forgot you can buy tops for the X-pens. Although I haven't used it, I have a "sun shade" for my X-pen. It would be strong enough to contain a jumper, even if your dog was trying to get out. There are grommets all around the edges and you can attach it with zip ties if you wanted or, as I plan, with ribbons.
  7. I agree. If an X-pen isn't an option because your hound jumps out... then no more than 6'. 12' is too long, they can get up quite a bit of speed in 12' and then break their neck at the end (with collar) or their ribs/shoulder (with harness). With 12', they'll probably get tangled anyway. They aren't the best at keeping their OWN legs untangled from a tie-out, let alone other people's, LOL!
  8. I researched this same subject myself before I got Summer. And concluded NO. Until I got my X-pen, though, I would tie her when we were camping, out of necessity. BUT she wore her harness AND she was only tied on her 6' leash. I would never have tied her on anything longer. AND someone was always beside her, always. Edit: And it was never for very long. I would recommend an X-pen! Summer tolerated the occasional tying... but she was thrilled with her X-pen!
  9. I feel so bad for you! I hope JJ heals super quickly and that you get that moron to pay the bill! I could have been in that situation just the other day but, luckily, all was okay. I was just at a provincial park for the week and, one evening while walking Summer in the dark, we were approached by two (TWO!) off-leash dogs, both with the Shepherd look to them but obviously not purebreds. The owner was quick to yell out, "don't worry, they're fine". Sigh. Hubby was holding her leash at the time and put himself in between Summer and the two dogs, prepared to kick them. He's 6'3" and quite capable of keeping them away if need be. I told the owner, "no, it's not fine and those dogs should be leashed". The law in the parks here states that ALL dogs must be leashed ALL the time. Although I was annoyed that the dogs were loose, I was glad that the man responded immediately to me and hurried his dogs along. Idiots.
  10. Good advice! I'm learning! And I really hope I'll never see any of this, although I suppose one day I will. Thanks, everyone!
  11. A picture of the trouble area would be good...
  12. With all the scary comments, I'm so glad our group, although often large, is very attentive. We are always watching the dogs (how can you not? they are so beautiful!). There are some very experienced greyhound people in the group, so I'm comfortable with both the group itself and the size of the group. Whenever troublesome dogs or screamers are attending, we are all advised and we know who to watch out for. And everyone is always ready to grab any dog, just as we do when anyone goes through a gate. I did find the "wheelbarrow" procedure of great interest and I'll keep it in mind should I ever have to reach in to a snarling pile!
  13. I have also heard about the cedar warning and the Costco beds definitely have some cedar in them. If Summer had reacted to the Costco bed, I would have opened it up and removed the cedar. Perhaps you could try that?
  14. We have a group here, too, and they are ALWAYS muzzled. Luckily, we don't normally have any trouble-makers and can run quite a large group with no worries. But when the trouble-makers attend, we pay a lot more attention. Summer has only owned me since the beginning of May but in that time, we've not had to restrict the numbers or rotate the dogs. But I was told that we'd probably do it by color. You know, all the fawns at one time, then all the brindles... that kind of thing.
  15. It's a beautiful eulogy! I feel like I know him now, which I see as a gift. Thank you (through my tears).
  16. I started worrying at the 7 hour mark, LOL. I figured I'd be getting out the big carpet shampooer when we got home! I really did NOT expect her to be successful. Such an incredibly pleasant surprise it was!
  17. I've had Summer since May 1 of this year. Today, we went to a family BBQ and she was left alone for 9 hours. This is the longest time we have been away, i.e. the longest time we have asked her to "hold on". What a wonderful girl she is!!!! -- we came home to absolutely no messes of any kind! By jove, I think we've got it! I am so proud of her, I just had to write and share my happiness!
  18. I use that self-sticking vet wrap and you can wrap it over gauze.
  19. I used Advantage with Heartguard many years ago but switched to Revolution a few years ago. I like using just one product instead of two, there's less chance of me forgetting! LOL! In all my years, I've never had a flea on my dog or in my house, with either Advantage or Revolution.
  20. When we got Summer on May 1, we tried the cat thing but, ultimately, I re-homed the cat. I wish you better luck! One suggestion which I got, which I think is a fabulous idea, is to pull the furniture away from the walls a little bit. Enough for the cat to get behind but not enough for the dog to follow!
  21. I see you are a sister to Lyca. You are also a half sister to Summer (formerly Coach Standifer), through Kiowa Sweet Trey.

  22. I do some standard outs plus whenever I feel like it. So she's always out at 8:30 then she has breakfast. Another out around noon. Again around 3. Again 5 or 6 and then dinner. Again 9. Again 12 or 1 then bed. I don't work so I'm here with her all day so we can easily add more outs. If I go out to hang laundry, she'll usually come with. Or if I go out to the pool for a swim, she'll come, too, and lie in her pool. So she gets lots of opportunities. I noticed that if I get sloppy and she needs out, that she'll start to pace in the family room, from door to door, and I'd better notice!
  23. I had a lab eat one of those little hard rubber balls (swallowed it whole), the kind that as a kid we used to call "Super Balls". I checked poo for a month and never saw anything. Almost ONE YEAR LATER, he coughed and puked it up! No damage, no problem. I hope your pup handles his erroneous consumption just as well!
