  1. Don't panic, it's not the canned stuff. Here's a posting from another member: Recall Alert Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd. Recalls Limited Production Code Dates of Dry Dog Food Because of Possible Excess Vitamin D FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd., recalls certain dry dog food because of possible excess Vitamin D that can affect the health of some dogs. The Blue Buffalo Company, Ltd., is recalling certain packages of its Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon and Large Breed Adult Chicken dry dog foods sold under the "BLUE" brand which have the potential to contain excessive levels of Vitamin D. If you have Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon and Large Breed Adult Chicken dry dog foods, please stop feeding them to your pet and return them to PSP for a complete refund. While Vitamin D is a beneficial component of these foods, the Company believes that these products may have levels of Vitamin D that are beyond the formula specifications, and has therefore chosen to withdraw them. Dogs reacting to the higher levels of Vitamin D may show signs of lethargy or exhibit unusually frequent water consumption and urination. If your pet has consumed the recalled products and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian. The affected products of Blue Buffalo Wilderness Chicken, Basics Salmon and Large Breed Adult Chicken dry dog foods were distributed nationwide at PSP and other pet specialty retailers. Only these products are involved in this recall: Blue Wilderness Chicken Flavor dry dog food 4.5 lb "Best If Used By JUL2611Z" "Best If Used By JUL2711Z" & "Best If Used By JUL2811Z" Blue Wilderness Chicken Flavor dry dog food 11 lb "Best If Used By JUL1211B" Blue Wilderness Chicken Flavor dry dog food 24 lb "Best If Used By JUL1211B" & "Best If Used By JUL1311B" Blue Basics Limited Ingredient Formula Salmon and Potato Recipe dry dog food 11 lb "Best If Used By AUG2111B" & "Best If Used By AUG2211B" Blue Basics Limited Ingredient Formula Salmon and Potato Recipe dry dog food 24 lb "Best If Used By AUG2111B" "Best If Used By SEP2311P" & "Best If Used By OCT2611P" Blue Life Protection Formula Natural Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe Large Breed Adult dog food 30 lb "Best If Used By SEP2211P" "Best If Used By SEP2311P" & "Best If Used By OCT2611P" No other Blue dry or can pet foods are involved in this recall, and only the specific code dates of these products are involved. To date there have been 36 cases nationwide of dogs reported with symptoms consistent with elevated Vitamin D in their systems while feeding on these specific productions of the products. In all cases the symptoms have subsided upon discontinuing feeding these products, with no apparent long term health consequences. Blue Buffalo learned of this potential condition in its products when it received reports of dogs diagnosed with high Vitamin D levels while feeding on the products from these specific production runs. On further investigation it was learned that a sequencing error had occurred at the supplier of the dry ingredients for these products. Immediately before producing the ingredients for these specific production runs, the supplier had run a product for another customer that contained a more potent form of Vitamin D used in chicken feeds. It is now believed that there was some level of carry over of this Vitamin D product into the ingredients for the specific manufacturing runs of the Blue products, thereby increasing the Vitamin D activity to unacceptable levels in the Blue ingredients. 2. Here's are those two values as per Dr. Dodds at Hemopets. So I agree, the values are a bit high. BUN: 22 mg/dL +/- 4 Creatnine: 1.7 mg/dL +/- 0.3 The BUN to Creatnine ratio is 13. Good thoughts are being sent your way and I hope all is well.
  3. Summer chatters, too. Not every day, though, so when she does it, it's kinda special!
  4. Congratulations! And interesting. We don't need, in Canada, to have any official obedience or good citizen training to be a therapy dog. In fact, Summer and I are going at the end of October for our exam and, if she passes, we go on 3 monitored visits and then we are on our own! She will have to behave properly on the "exam", be gentle, not pee, not freak out at wheelchairs or a dropped steel bowl, etc. Not too hard.
  5. I would check with the vet right away. My father passed away from cancer this year and his tumor had "come out" of his body (I forget what the specific condition was called). It started with a blister, then another and eventually it came out in one place then in other places. Sorry if I'm frightening you and I have no idea if it's the same thing... but I do remember at the beginning, it was described as a blister. They actually thought at first that it was shingles.
  6. Yuck. Fall is here.

  7. Don't beat yourself up, she could have done it running anywhere. Summer caught her foreleg on a nail a couple of weeks ago and punctured it, plus ripping off a layer of skin. Who would have thought that a pavilion in a public park would be dangerous? I find, if there's a way, these greyhounds will find it! Hope your pup feels better soon!
  8. I feed Blue Buffalo Wilderness - Salmon. But I know many, many people feed Taste of the Wild.
  9. We adopted an old boy (non-greyhound) at the age of 10 and we had it done then. He had quite the coin purse for a while and, whenever he exercised, it kind of puffed up a bit. I'd say it took about 6 months to go to its permanent state, which was certainly not non-existent but you didn't really notice and it stopped puffing.
  10. My old boy with the nose thing... his nose was also always dry and warm, never cold and wet. Weird. Well, at least you repaired it and you know how to treat it going forward. And here's something... when you have shorts on and the nose is in bad condition... boy, that hurts when they nudge you for petting!
  11. Some gardeners put out moth balls, to keep away skunks, I believe. Not people with dogs, of course! But perhaps... if they were dedicated gardeners... moth balls could be out there. And who knows what else?
  12. I have to wonder... what was in the hole? Some weird fungus or strange little grub, perhaps?
  13. Be aware that it may very well come back. I could never get my old guy's to clear up and stay away. Once it was clear and I stopped moisturizing it, it would gradually return.
  14. That's wonderful that her nose is improving and looks like a nose again! Not sure if Bag Balm is all that different from Vaseline (they are both petroleum based) but I'm no chemist. Besides, whatever works is the important thing and her nose is lovely!
  15. No, luckily I haven't had this particular one. But I have noticed that when they get spooked by something (loud noise, slippery floor, etc.), it does take them a surprisingly long time to recover. For instance, being afraid of the back yard for a week or two after the fireworks are all done. Or slipping on the tile one day and then spending a week or two creeping along, apparently rebuilding confidence. They are definitely different kettles of fish! Ed.: I would suggest getting a very high value treat, like dehydrated beef liver, and trying to give him that. Never heard of any hound refusing that treat! And perhaps that treat can ONLY come from you, so you are the bearer of the "special yummy treat".
  16. Try this. At the very least, it has good corn pictures. Corn Hulling
  17. I agree. When they sleep on my bed and begin to leave a dirty spot where they lay, they get a bath. I use an everyday dog shampoo so I'm not too concerned about drying them out. Maybe because I live in the country and God only knows what they go out and lay in on two acres but everyday brushing just doesn't keep them clean enough for me. They don't smell bad unless they find something nasty to roll in but their skin still gets dirty. I still have to change my bedding every other day even when they are all bathed and clean. Don't any of you have a problem keeping you sheets and couch covers clean when you don't bathe them? I'm amazed. I like my dogs clean, too. If I didn't bathe my previous dogs every month, I'd notice the dirt building up on things, usually around their beds. So Summer will get the same regimen -- she is living exactly the same way as the other dogs PLUS she goes to greyhound playdates every weekend. I use a nice 2-in-1 shampoo on her that is available only to groomers and she stays soft and plush and velvety. My bedsheets don't get dirty as she doesn't go under but the comforter gets washed regularly. I don't use couch covers but I deliberately bought family room furniture which doesn't show dirt. She is not, though, allowed on the living room furniture which is a more delicate fabric in a light caramel color.
  18. Summer told me just this week that I am her GODDESS! Boy, it feels goooood!
  19. If you want a copy of Dr. Dodds' complete blood panel results for greyhounds (including thyroid levels), PM me with your email address and I'll send the .pdf to you.
  20. I don't think it was anything to worry about. My previous non-greys have eaten lots of apples and apple cores over their lives with no ill effects. Not every day or anything, of course.
  21. When we visit Grandma's house, she doesn't have a fence so Summer has to do her business on the leash, too. At the very first visit, we bumbled around and we did have a pee inside. I also think she was anxious, as we hadn't had her very long at that time. But then she picked out a "pee spot" and we were good to go, no more accidents.
  22. Ha, I know what you mean! Summer had terrible gas when she was settling in. In her case, we just (barely) lived through it and it stopped after a while. I found it improved once we treated her hookworm, I assume Augie is worm free? And you're lucky you can get a 30 lb. bag for $40 I'd love to be able to pay that little, kibble is pricier up here.
  23. Congratulations from Canada! My hound is my first greyhound, too, and, like you, I'm loving the ride! (and I use photobucket to post my pictures).
