  1. Ditto! Except I do not like the 'mouthing'. For myslef it's ok, but I don;t want my dogs doing it to otehrs, especially my grandkids, so I discourage that behaviour with a loud "OUCH", which usually works.
  2. Me either. I use it on my horses, as well....both cream and drops.
  3. I'm so glad to read he's made lots of progress in the past couple of days! Did he enjoy the pizza bones???
  4. So very, very sorry for your tragic loss. Remember all the good times you had....
  5. I'm glad he did not spend all his time crying. He has had a lot of changes in the past 2 weeks. I am a bit concerned that he is spending too much time in his crate. He needs to have time outside the crate. When you're home, why does he need to be in the crate? Especially after he's already spent 5 hours locked in there... He needs to learn the rules of the house...he cannot do that if he's in his crate. If you're concerned about the cat, put a muzzle on him.
  6. So sorry for the loss of your Murphy. He looks like he was such a wonderful boy.
  7. You've received lots of good ideas, most of which are repeating the same thing over and over again. No crate Muzzle Belly band A couple of X-Pens or Baby gates to keep him in your kitchen. Lots of newspapers / puppy pads on the floor Frozen kongs Someone to come let him out after 3-4 hours. And you MUST start Alone Training as detailed in the McConnell book. Every day. Several times a day. It WILL get better, but you have to really, really work at it!!!
  8. Both dogs sit on command, with or without a treat. Nixon will sit if he thinks he might get a treat. Ruby is often found sitting outside, leaning up against the fence. She does not always associate sitting with treats.
  9. Good his temp is normal. I'd do what others have suggested...take a flashligt and re-check every inch of his entire foot and leg for more 'thorns' Poor boy....
  10. Having owned multiple dogs and horses for nearly 30 years, I have developed a really good 'feel' for what needs to be seen by a vet NOW, what can wait and what I can treat here at home. It does take years of experience.... and you also have to have the right 'personality'. I have a friend who has owned a horse for a number of years and still calls the vet for every single little injury.
  11. Hope Wally is feeling better today. Please keep us updated!! I had no idea that a dog could react that way to morphine.
  12. I know people who use them on horses. The equine equipment is several hundred dollars. I also have a friend who is a physician and she just uses a regular oxygen mask made for humans on her horse. It fits very well over one nostril, and she then puts the medication / puffer up against the open end and administers the meds. She's been doing this for years. She said that both nostrils do not need to be covered....they channel into the same nasal cavity, and then into the lungs, and that putting the meds into only one nostril is just fine. Her daughter is a vet and agrees....I have seen her daughter administer the meds this way numerous times. Perhaps an infant sized one mask would be suitable for a hound? Certainly worth asking your vet....
  13. Katie! We have 13 wooden stairs to get up to our bedrooms/office.... With Nixon, we did what you did for going up, but it still took him well over a week to figure going up all on his own. For going down, we found that standing right beside him, hand on collar, and kind of leaning into him sideways...almost 'pushing' him up against the wall, helped to steady his body. He was very cautious and it took him longer to master the going-down on his own. Ruby, on the other hand, was up that big staircase on her own after 2 minutes in the house...she just sort of bounded up...then stood there at the top, looking down at us. Of course I raced up and helped her down, using the same 'hold and lean' method as Nixon. But, she is a clever girl and figured that out on her own in a few hours!
  14. So... Is he staying for more than the weekend?!?!?
