I'm so sorry to read this Carla- he was lucky to have such a wonderful life with you.
  2. Get some granulex- it will fix it up in no time. All that dead tissue needs to come off as winterwish said. Scrub, scrub, scrub if you dont' have the granulex. Use a clean piece of gauze and some chlorhexa derm or betadine scrub and scrub it raw- it sounds wrong but it will help it heal faster. It will soon granulate and you will continue to give it a good scrub a couple of times a day. Other have used hydrotherapy- I'm less familiar with it and it may work in this case but if it was one of my dogs I would do the above.
  3. Fingers crossed BJ- limping can be so many things- could be an ACL, just a twist or who knows. My friend's 13 year old boy couldn't get up on day...we pretty much thought that was that. Within a week he was his old self and back to walking 2 miles at a time. No one has any idea what it was. He still gets a little shakey now and then but by and large he is one happy fella...a limp isn't always bad news- lots of white light and healing thoughts heading to both you and Black Jack.
  4. I would do the mast cell tumor at least and see what you are dealing with.
  5. We all have to make our own choices in life. My husband and I have never question what we have spent on our dogs. Chloe had cost us a fair amount over the years $3k for her nerve embolism diagnosis and treatment when she was 5 and Christmas this year was another $1500 for a toe amputation at 12 year old- various other costs over the years. I think it was a couple of thousand when we put Nate down when he broke his leg due to osteo. Generally, my DH will listen to my choices in the dogs' care and I tend to be quite realistic in what I would do and when. Nate's leg has really helped me in my choices with cancer in a older dog- and even with the knowledge from that experience- each dog is different- what was the right choice for him may not be the right choice for the next dog. We both love our dogs and do our best to do right by them. Are there times that we rather not spend the money? Sure. Do car repairs often come at the same time- of course- it never rains but pours but we do our best to work together. Best of luck with your dog and family.
  6. Hi Lynn, Have you tried granulex? Its really great stuff. I helped a friend (Pam N.) clean up a wound on her dog's throat that started out about 3" in diameter. By the end of the week with granulex and a little debriding the wound was 1 1/2" and in another week pretty much gone. I have used it on my own dogs as well. I will also use granulex and then follow up with EMT gel- cleaning it out twice a day. Good luck! Link to product: http://www.kvvet.com/KVVet/productr.asp?pf...A139AF642CD679A
  7. I was lucky enough to meet Crooke and, as others have done along the way, fell completely in love with her. She reminds me of our Chloe who is also about to turn 13. Your pictorial is perfect. It really shows her inner self. Thanks so much for sharing. Its so hard to lose the perfect ones who touch everyone they meet. I think we are lucky to have them in our lives if only for a short time. I'm sure that Crooke is never far from you and there is no question she sent Elphie to you. Happy Birthday Crooke
  8. Depending on the toe, it probably should have been wrapped for several weeks after the first incident. Chloe who is/was almost 13 when she did her hind toe ended up tearing the ligament and it wouldn't stay located. We opted for amputation which may seem drastic but it was a hind, outside toe. The surgery cost way too much- Merry Christmas Chloe and she was using the bandaged foot in a few days. At the end of two weeks she walked a mile on it without complaint. We kept a boot on it for the first month or so when walking but since then she hasn't had any problems with her toe. The recovery time was much quicker than trying to fix it and was much less painful.

    Goods

I'm so sorry to read this Dianne- Goods and Fudgie can now run together Big hugs to all.
  10. Sounds like edema- or as someone else said fluid from the injury. Best of luck to all of you.
  11. Torn muscle? Do you have Care of the Racing Greyhound? Its a fairly usual spot for them to tear.
  12. I guess I've been lucky never to have to have used a cone with any of my dogs. They don't seem to worry their injuries much. For little cuts like that I spray granulex then apply a little emt gel and it will be fine in no time...or go see your vet to have it looked at. Not everyone is comfortable dealing with the cuts and scrapes. We had had some many over the years that I take care of the smaller ones myself...sometimes the not so small ones as well. We love granulex at my house.
  13. Oh Robin- that sucks Fingers crossed for it to be very slow moving.
  14. I'm so sorry Nancy- Sprite is such a wonderful soul. She's left her body but I'm sure she will be watching out for you. Cyber hugs and tears.
  15. I love my vets in Beverly- Beverly Animal Natural Heath Clinic: http://www.banhc.com They have MANY greyhound clients and are wonderful with the dogs.
  16. Another vote for hamburger or other ground meat.
  17. Granulex is incredible- its really helped us heal up a number of nasty wounds. I also use emt gel with it. We did a great job on a nasty neck tear at Dewey this year. Friend's dog came with a wound and within the week of twice daily cleanings it was noticeably smaller and within two weeks was pretty much gone. You can find granulex at kv vet http://wwwkvvet.com
  18. Lets see...Chloe at 12.7 years old just dislocated her toe well enough to tear the ligaments and hope for keeping it relocated were nil. Toe amputation next day: $1381 plus vet visit to determine this: $150. When she was 5 she racked up $2000 in three days with idiopathic nerve damage and then another $1k of treatment to get her back to almost normal. She's our 6 million dollar puppy- I won't even blink to do it all again. We are lucky that we have the means to go to these lengths.- it also means that we cut back in other areas when we have to or a planned trip gets canceled.
  19. We have used Metacam with Chloe for the past 2 years- she's going to be 13 in April and had a nerve embolism when she was 5 that resulted in muscle loss and bone rubbing skin as she aged and lost muscle tone. It keeps her moving well. We blood test every 6 months and use an herbal supplement to help her liver so far so good. It certainly gives her a good quality of life. I like the metacam because its liquid and you can adjust the dose down to what works for yours dog. She takes a 45lb does and currently weights 55lbs. For arthritis I would tend to go through the products aimed at fixing the problem like glucosamine, chondrotin, msm etc. adequan is pretty amazing when it works. We use it with a friend's older horse and it has really improved her comfort.
  20. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. Stories of the beautiful Barbie Jade have added something to everyone who had a chance to read and learn about your special girl. Thank you for sharing her with us and please know that you are in our thoughts.
  21. Beautiful! I will recommend a colors ribbon on one for those times when you need to know who is who Here are my twins:
  22. Good luck with what ever you decided to do. Nate did a partial of his ACL many years ago- we opted for rest and rehab. He came back very well from it.
  23. Freeze/thaw/Freeze is more a taste issue than food safety-unless of course you allow the meat to really warm up during the thaws. As for freezing for parasites- it does not kill bacteria otherwise I would expect the government to insist that all of our meat was frozen to eliminate nasty food poisoning outbreaks. Some other types of parasites can be killed during a hard freeze for an extended period. Most of what I feed my dogs has been frozen more because I buy in bulk than for any other reason. The parasites others have mentioned are certainly a concern and something that everyone should be aware of.
  24. I'm so sorry Jennifer and so happy you got to share a wonderful time in Dewey together. He is a beautiful soul and you are lucky to have found each other if only for a short time.
