    Hogan

I am at a loss as to what to even type. Saturday night, Hogan started having serious seizures. Sunday, the vet thinks that he had a stroke, and this morning we let him go. My sweet silly red hound. I don't know what we ever did without you. Your bulldozed your way into our lives and entered our hearts like a bull in a china shop. You helped us heal and gave us laughter after we lost so much family in such a short time. You kept me warm, protected me, kissed me when I was sick, and loved us unconditionally. You were my bicycle companion, my burglar alarm and my door-to-door salesman repeller. My sweet silly clown, I miss you terribly. Please forgive me for not letting you go when you told me to. Run free my sweetheart. You are now pain and itch free.
  6. Mary, I'm so so sorry.
  7. Glad the shot is finally here. Will be thinking good thoughts for Tootsie!
  8. Well, I have been on the phone all morning with my vet and the neurologist. Hogan's bloodwork came back "fairly" normal. The results say that he doesn't have a metabolic disorder. The neurologist and my vet agree that if the seizure behavior continues that it is most likely he has a growth or lesion affecting his brain-but since discontinuing his thyroid meds he seems like his usual red clown self. If this is the case, there really isn't a whole lot we can do for him. The neurologist also thinks it is possible that he had a sinus infection that was putting pressure on his little red brain. He was having yellow discharge from one eye unlike the normal gunk that comes out. He DOES agree with me that Hogan's allergies aren't neurological scratching, because he is responding to benedryl again. So he thinks it is possible that between his bad reaction the the Temeril P, and then his allergic reaction to the anesthesia, his allergic reaction to the pain pills and now his allergic reaction to something in the thyroid meds that we probably don't want to medicate him with anything if possible beyond Omega Fatty acids and antihistamines. The vet suggested again the Atopica, but with Hogan's history of weird reactions, I'm not very excited by the possibility. So, I am hoping there is no more of these episodes. He's been very much my dog the last couple of days, and even though he's itchy-he's back to his sweet self. Except for the fly chasing.... Lucy and Diesel are back to being needy and in Hogan's space again, so I guess I need to pay better attention to how they respond to him. Hello Mom, we've been trying to tell you he's CRAZY! I appreciate all the good thoughts, and so does Hogan. I guess we will take it one day at a time. Go hug your hounds please.
  9. Still waiting. I called the office at about 2, and the vet has been in emergency surgery all day. I know they will call me back before 6 my time, so one one hand-I hope there are some answers in the results. With his other problems that have been happening, the vet really feels that it is an organic brain lesion, a tumor or a metabolic disorder. I know they are running a full CBC and a couple other tests including liver function-but the good news is in just a couple of days of being off the thyroid medication Hogan seems like he feels much better. Sunday he had 4 episodes, one lasting for over 20 minutes-so we have all been a little freaked out. Note to people who have dogs with allergies, the filler ingredients in medication can cause an allergic response. Thanks guys for the good thoughts for my fuzzy buddy. We both appreciate it.
  10. More prayers for Freddie! And a great big hug for you.
  11. Yep. He is allergic to the filler in the thyroid medication he has been on, and for some reason he never got a full blood panel done. If this turns up nothing, it is most likely he has an organic lesion or a brain tumor. I really don't know what to do then.
  12. and I need a miracle that they find something to explain his new seizure behavior. So if you have any spare good thoughts for Hogan, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
  13. Awww! Nice to see Coco! Glad you are both doing better!
  14. Demodex info There are some more links to inhalant allergies, food allergies, and the other mange. Hope it helps.
  15. I'm not sure how long the dose period in conjuction with chemo would be. My Dad was told it would be something he had to take for the rest of his life. Dunno if that helps either...
  16. I don't have any experience in the dog dept, but that is what my Dad was taking, and holy cow it is expensive. His bill without insurance was over $30k per year, and luckily Novartis provided it for him until the insurance kicked in. It probably has reduced in cost, but it would not be an option for treatment for a lot of people. Even though the side effects are not terrible compared to a lot of products, there were still some very uncomfortable ones for my Dad. Another thing that can happen, is the Gleevec resistance that is where the cancer mutates enough to get around the specific enzyme inhibitor, and the cancer comes back twice as fierce. Not to be a negative Nellie or anything, but thought you might want some info from the human end.
