Abdominal Mass

Recommended Posts

We received news today that our 10 year old greyhound has a large mass in her abdomen. We live in a rural area so they cannot do anymore for her then the imaging tests. We are waiting for an appointment with a specialist. The mass is pushing on her bladder and bowel. She may not be able to defecate soon.

Has anyone gone through this? Our vet has no advice for us. We are going to feed wet food to soften her stool but we don't know what else to do.

Did your clinic mention involvement of the spleen? I hope your pup can be seen asap. Keep doing your best to get that to happen and let us know when you have more info. Good luck :grouphug

She did actually and the severity of this has resulted from an initial misdiagnosis.

My girl has struggled with arthritis and what was initially suspected as a hormone issue. The mass is pushing on her spleen. If you push along her spine she displays discomfort.

It's like prying teeth to get information. Basically, she said she's not comfortable dealing with it and recommends the specialist to further investigate and give me the answers.

She needs to be seen ASAP.  Call around and find someone who can work you in.  Time is critical in this instance.

I don't mean to be harsh, but realistically, this is getting close to an emergency situation.  The mass could be something very, very bad - hemangiosarcoma - that can rupture in the abdomen.  A dog can basically bleed out in a very short amount of time.  Hopefully the mass can still be removed surgically.

Even if it's not hemangio, a tumor that makes her unable to eliminate can be life-threatening very quickly too.

At this point, I would urge you to use this time to consider what you will do if faced with bad options.

You're not being harsh. I'm in Nova Scotia. No vet in the province is taking on new patients. Our only option is the Veterinary College of PEI. Animals have died in my county and the surrounding counties waiting to be seen.

I have 2 options. Wait for the referral and hope. Or euthanasia. But I don't know what we're dealing with. The vet can't tell me. I'm completely lost.

Our hearts are breaking with yours. Chris is right, and hemangio is what I suspected. Is there another vet in the practice who would help? Can you get into the college practice? I don’t know all of the circumstances but I might try just showing up as an emergency. I’m so sorry you are dealing with all of this.

It's dire here.

They think the referral we have will take 2-3 months. I've left messages all over our province. I'm hoping someone will call back tomorrow.

I have a phone call with my vet tomorrow to get more information. I have an appointment with a vet who specifically treats greyhounds.

I'm so sorry.  It sounds like things are worse there than they are here.  You might ask the referral vet if they have a list for cancelations to see if you can get in sooner.  {{{hugs}}}

Sarahgrey,  email me your location and if you are associated with any of the greyhound adoption groups. I've FB messaged a friend with Nova Scotia to see if she has any connections who could help you.. Slim chance but worth a try.   "macoduck at the letters ec dot rr dot com"

Sarahgrey, my friend says to reach out to Jeanette M  Reynolds in Musquodoboit Harbor.
Also try Rhonda Whitehead who works at Sackville Animal Hospital in Halifax.

Be sure to say that Jenn Boswell suggested them. (Jenn lives in Alabama but also claims Nova Scotia as home.)

Editing to add that both Jeanette and Rhonda are on Facebook.

I thought Nova Scotia might be different but this is terrible not being able to find the right treatment for your dog. We are in Ontario and it has been really tough here with corporations taking over clinics and good vets retiring or we cannot get in, especially anyone who knows greyhounds. We had good referrals from a GTer but could not get in.

You already have good leads but thought of two who might help?

or Julie Ann Lee in New Brunswick with Adored Beast: mariana@adoredbeast.com

All the best for your girl.
