AnnieKangaroo Posted June 24, 2020 Share Posted June 24, 2020 (edited) Hi all! I'm new here 😁 We have just adopted a houndie by the name of Annie. She's 2.5 and a big puppy. She's also really clever and with a huge personality, we really love her! But she has this weird thing she does during play in the backyard only. She'll chase her rubber pig around and do some mad zoomies, then flop on her side and hyper-roach. She'll flip on her back and really twist and turn as if she's trying to get up but can't. We've seen her recover from it and get up, and tail's wagging but it's like she goes into overdrive, flips herself over and then gets stuck and panicked about it. She only does this in the backyard after big zoomies with her pig, never any other times, although it does sometimes take her a bit to get out of bed in the morning. When she's stuck out in the yard, she's also a bit more mouthy than other times...doesn't growl/snap/bite down but she's definitely grabbing things in her mouth. Is this just play? Compulsive behaviours? Remnants of race training? Something way more serious? Our previous greyhound never did this (but also didn't have Annie's endless energy levels). greysmom Posted June 24, 2020 Share Posted June 24, 2020 Perfectly normal. She's just playing. Even at 2 1/2, she's still a puppy for a large breed dog. He energy and maturity levels won't really even out until around 3 1/2 - 4 years old. So she's being exhuberant and silly and trying to get all her wiggles out - which you definitely want her to do!! She also probably likes how the grass feels and may have some itchiness the upside down wiggles are addressing. You might give her a good brushing a couple times a week to help with shedding and dry skin. Congrats on your new adoption and welcome to GT!! MerseyGrey Posted June 24, 2020 Share Posted June 24, 2020 This sounds like my dog the first summer we got him - he was 7 1/2! For him, it was the signal that a zoomie was about to follow. He would shuffle himself across the lawn like this regularly and it never crossed my mind to be worried about him. If yours is anything like mine, if she gets herself into a situation she can’t get herself out of, she will whine like she is being tortured. He hasn’t done it so much since that first summer and we put it down to him being filled with joy because he was outside rather than in a kennel. He does however still snatch and grab for toys (he’s 9 1/2 now) and is very single minded when he wants whatever toy you have in your hand. He is lightning quick and have caught a few bruises on my hands from not letting go of his toys quickly enough so if you have a little ones around it might be better not to let them play together until you can control that behaviour. Your Annie sounds like my Punkin, who will be nine later this year and cannot roach deeply enough when she first wakes up except that it's not outside in the grass but rather in our bed Wiggly roaches = extremely happy doggo - it's a good thing! Most of the time she seems happy enough doing it, but a couple times she got stuck and started barking. Glad to hear it's a puppy/hyperactive hound thing!
