I'm so sorry that you and your girl are going though this. My 11 year old girl is starting to display back end weakness and shaky legs. When she gets up it seems as though her back end is too heavy...poor baby. She's on 200 mg of gabapentin daily and will see the vet for a follow up next week. She also seems a little "down" mood-wise. I'm hoping that will pass as her body becomes used to the medication. I wish you both all the best. I know how very difficult this can be.

When Sallie had osteo gabapentin was one of her drugs, and my vet checked on the max dose since she didn't do well on Tramadol. She said the max dose for gabapentin in a greyhound is 800 mg/day, so you are way below the max. Sallie was about 60 lbs.

I meant 2 100 mg.. bottle states twice a day. That would be 400 mg is that a lot? And what is the spacing?

Twice a day would be every 12 hours. My Wendy gets hers at 6 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. with breakfast and dinner.

That is not even close to true. Huge safety range, limited side effects, dogs can acclimate over time requiring a higher dose for the same effect, the pain management specialist I worked with for Zuri had a client whose dog was taking 900 mg 3 or 4 times a day.

Not encouraging the OP to do that, but 400 mg/day is very little.

We saw immediate change same day with the once a day dose of 300mg. Within a few months we needed 300mg twice a day. Then in a few more months we needed 50mg of tramadol in the middle of the 2 doses of Gabapentin.

Right now she gets 8am Meloxicam & 300mg Gabapentin. 5pm 50mg of Tramadol. 9pm 300mg of Gabapentin.

Back when I did my research I saw that Gabapentin works really well with an NSAID. There may be something else going on with your girl other than Arthritis and Nerve pain?

She does have hip dysplasia left hip. Maybe it's coming close to her time. Just don't understand hoe she can still get on the bed but tired so quickly walking. Can't X-ray her last time she had a hard time with anesthesia. How old is your dog?

Rainy's 13, but she doesn't have any hip dysplasia that we are aware of. She did run a butt ton of races though. Rainy doesn't really go on long walkies anymore. Most of them are under 15 minutes before she starts loudly panting and dragging behind. Every couple weeks I'll take her out by herself for a special mommy walk. She gets to go where ever she wants at whatever speed she wants. Lots of sniffing and slug pace, but it makes her happy.

When I'm that old I don't want to go on long walks either! I want to lay in bed and eat ice cream & cookies ;)

Snow is ten. Your are lucky to have her. I guess I can't walk with my cousin anymore. Her dog is only four and a terrier.

I know this is much easier advice to give... But don't focus on the end. Just spoil these seniors every single day. Each sunrise and sunset is a blessing when our pups get this old.

You are also lucky! I know plenty of hounds that never made it to 10. Makes me feel guilty to have a 13 yr old sometimes.

I will. I like my vet but there are really no greyhound knowlegable vets in my area. The only greys they had were mine and my other three have passed.

Well l Tim snow for a 15 minute walk tonight. She did not do too bad. Gave her her pills and shot and succeeded on second try but also pricked myself in the head in the process. Guess it is a learning curve. I'd better learn fast!

You'll do fine! Snow will do fine! Good job, both of you.

She doesnt really need to be greyhound knowledgeable. Pain meds are pain meds. Knowing Gabapentin has a quick half life in greyhounds is useful, you could point her to the study if you think she'd read it. But you need to advocate for your dog. Tell her she is not as improved as you would like, ask what you're options are. If her answers don't satisfy you, get a second opinion.
