Guest Islandhopper3
Rimadyl and Carprofen. We had two senior dogs (Shepherd-Husky mix, yellow Lab) on Rimadyl, and they seemed to do well. Our third senior, a 14 yr old Golden retriever was treated for inflammation with carprofen, a generic anti-inflammatory that our vet began using instead of rimadyl, and which is supposed to be the same non-steroidal anti-inflammatory component of Rimadyl. About a month after starting treatment he suffered a series of seizures that were initially attributed to old age. Within a month of the first seizure our Golden had 2 or 3 more stroke-like seizures, and died 16 hours after the final episode. One of our younger dogs (8 year APBT/Rhodesian mix) was also treated with carprofen (37.5mg twice a day, with food) for hip and spine pain. Within 30 days of beginning treatment he had developed multiple health issues that included skin lesions on/in his ears, itching, oral lesions, hypersensitivity to touch, loss of coordination, loss of appetite/weight, change of sleep habits, increased urination, and muscle-spasm seizures. On-line research found owner-, and veterinary-documented carprofen side-effects matching each of our dogs symptoms. We discontinued carprofen, and our dog was put on a 14 day regiment of prednisone. The prednisone began to work almost immediately, but it's taken a full six months for our dog to recover. We don't know why rimadyl worked so well, and carprofen so horribly, but hopefully the price we paid to learn about medication side-effects will save someone else the heartbreak of seeing their dog suffer.
