spottydog
We saw the specialist, and indeed she does have early signs of PRA, but he didn't think she had any vision loss yet. She is 2 1/2. Does the vision loss always go quickly? Do they go completely, stone blind or or will there light and shadow? Should have asked the specialist but was in kind of a state of shock... phall
Hi Spottydog, My boy, Lucas, has PRA and was diagnosed at about the same age as your girl. From my experience, the loss of vision is gradual and there is light and shadow which deteriorates as it progresses. I can tell that Lucas's sight has gotten worse over the last month or so by the way he walks (head low and extended out as he's trying to see). It depends on the dog, but from what I've learned it typically happens over 12-24 months, but in the end, all vision is lost. It's amazing, though, how well they adapt. People told me that but I was skeptical. I am so proud of Lucas. I wish you and your girl the same and the best.
Guest DHamm
Kiowa Mon Manny seems to be a common denominator here. He was my girl's sire and he figures heavily into your boy's lineage, too. My girl is Bella Run Softly. Your boy is adorable in the picture, love his ears! I have noticed my new boy has been having vision issues, and after researching, I believe it is PRA. And surprise, his grand parent is Kiowa Mon Manny! We are seeing the vet next week and headed to an ophthalmologist after that. We have only had him for 2 weeks, and I am devastated. cleptogrey
Has your dog seen a veterinary ophthalmologist? This is a must. They are not as expensive as other specialist. Please go for it!
phall
I concur - the ophthalmologist we saw was well worth it. We see her once a year unless anything unexpected happens.
GreyBoy
This is a must. They are not as expensive as other specialist. Please go for it! Yes, I did see a specialist at the University of Minnesota. She confirmed the diagnosis but gave me good advice and comfort. He is using OcuGlo now and has I believe some vision left in bright light at distances. He is doing very well though not as active as before. He is only 3.
