So glad Dr. Toby was able to take care of CoCo and set her on a healing path. Well, I guess he did that for both of you! Best wishes for a complete and uneventful recovery. Please keep us posted.

Thank you for asking... Things are going great! Looking back, I can't believe how upset I was last Wednesday and the week leading up to it. Now, I'm just enjoying my greys and the previous 2 weeks seem like months ago. Dr Toby did the surgical debridement Monday morning, was able to close it up (a surprise but she's been doing so well), and she was home Monday night. He said that my vets here in Atlanta (not the ones in Athens) had done a great job cleaning up the abscess on Thursday and Saturday, and that his sugery went well as a result. Today he said it was granulating or something and healing really well! Thursday she'll have the drain removed. She's even acting like her old cute self and impatient to run and jump.

It's remarkable how things have turned out. Thank heaven that in my depths of despair, you all were out there to help. Things have gone from disasterous to amazing. I am fortunate to have a resource like GT and Dr. Toby, whom I will happily drive out to Acworth and consult whenever the next greyt health crisis happens!

That is wonderful. It makes such a difference to have someone you are comfortable with and confident in on your girl's team! My vets aren't specialists, but there's no one else I would trust so completely with the care of my "kids" as them. Sending happy, healing thoughts that all is smooth sailing from here on!!

This is really fantastic news. I'm so glad you found better care! Maybe when this is all said and done send a copy of your records back to the vet hospital so they can realize how badly they screwed up.

Grehounds are so unique that It makes sense to consult a vet with lots of greyhound experience during an emergency. Thank goodness I came here to have that pointed out! Dr Toby may get more experience than most because one of Atlanta's rescue groups keeps their kennel in his basement, but any large grehound group probably has a preferred vet, and that maybe a wise direction to look in for any grey that needs special care. I don't know whay I didn't think of it sooner and thought a big university vet school would be the way to go, but I hope others will learn from my mistake :wubsite

Yes, I am writing letters to the school and to the clinical trial coordinators to let them know that more oversight and a clearer framework is needed!

Have you tried hyperbaric chamber therapy for your pup? An hour's worth of oxygen at high pressure may be very helpful in helping to kill that infection.

Our Maltipoo, Max, has anal sac adenocarcinoma, and in his protocol is twice monthly hyperbaric chamber therapy at the integrative oncologist's. (He also gets ozone/UV therapy and acupuncture from her.)

Here's some info on hyperbaric chamber therapy from her website:

Did they do a culture of the infected tissue?

My gryehound Marvin had a front leg amputation and did great. Our Albi (Borzoi Saluki mix) had a front leg amputation and had 3 other surgeries to remove infected tissue. They finally did a culture and found out he had MRSA.

Best wishes for your greyhound.

I'm not familiar with that, but I read the info you linked, and it sounds promising. After my girl's infection was cultured, she got on the right antibiotics, which seem to be working. The hct is great to know about in case she becomes resistant and the infection continues. Thank you for the info ;)

Yes, thank heavens they did a culture and she seems to be on the right antibiotics. The infection seems to be under control... how did Albi do after the 3 surgeries? I love Borzois and Salukis- beautiful hounds

Hope things are still moving in the right direction.

Sweet coco is doing great and will hopefully get her stitches out this weekend. She's ready to run and jump and is tired of being kept quiet- a problem we're glad to have!

Absolutely great news! Smooch your girl for us!

Will do.... she is smothered in smooches!

Thinking of your sweet CoCo. Hope she's continuing to improve. :heart

Thank you...she's doing so much better now!
