Soft Poo Again :(

As you all know, Fusion has had a lot of belly issues since we got him. The first time was hooks, which we got rid of-or at least enough where they don't bother him.

The second/third/fourth time was just trying to find the right food as he is fiber responsive, and can't have a fish based food.

 

We finally found a food that isn't W/D that worked amazing and has been for the past 3 months or so. Nice solid poos for 3 months straight.

The last 2 weeks or so he's been having very soft poos, sometimes with abit of mucous in them like he did when he had the hooks/tummy upset from fish. He was also waking up in the morning with grumbly tummy...which is always a bad sign. His poos have only been gross at the end of the day as his morning pops are soft but solid. He is halfway through a new bag, so I dont think it can be a bad bag of food.

I don't know if this makes sense but, I missed a month on his interceptor-which controls hooks and other parasites. Do you think the interceptor was helping keep the hooks dormant/at bay and because I missed a month they started coming back?

I gave him one two nights ago and yesterday morning he didn't have a grumbly tummy, but still soft poo at the end of the day.

I'm really not trying to change food on him again, though I may grab a bag of w/D to mix in with his food to help solid things up abit if it doesn't get better in a few days.

IMO, if you're not sure if you have hooks again or not, you probably still have them. And you've *got* to get rid of them. They aren't just a nuisance. They can absolutely destroy the lining of his digestive tract. Then you're really sunk.

 

Even if you did manage to clear him once, if you had them before they are in your yard now, so it's highly likely he's picked them up again, especially if there was a lapse in his worm protection. I don't recall (sorry) what treatment he's had before, but it could take an extended, months-long treatment plan to get rid of them. Then you'll need three negative fecals spaced well apart to really be sure.

 

At this point, you also might consider a consult with a gastrointestinal specialist/internist to discuss the possibility of IBS. Those symptoms are exactly what our Lilly had going on - soft-to-diarrhea poops, mucousy, sometimes bloody, horrible stomach gurgles, not wanting to eat, nauseous all the time. We also discovered she had developed an intolerance for anything chicken. In consultation with our regular vet, we decided to try a natural approach before the steroid-treatment route, so we used acupuncture and chinese herbal medicine to get at the IBS, and completely divested her diet of even the smallest traces of chicken (some preservatives used in foods and treats are chicken-based - tocopherols - and she can't tolerate even those minute amounts). We found a food she likes and can tolerate, some treats that everybody can eat, and even some chew bones to give her. She has been symptom-free for about 10 months now. No tummy gurgles, her poops are completely normal, she's regular, and she's eating! So it's something to consider.

Could well be hooks or other worms. It is almost impossible to get a positive test for worms unless you just happen to hit perfect timing . It's sort of like playing a slot machine or the lottery - once in a while there's actually a positive result - but most of the time not.

 

I think I would be checking with the vet about deworming again, and maybe some Metronidazole as well to help the tummy. We went through this numerous times with Rocket for several years, and he was eventually diagnosed with Stress Colitis. No idea what was stressing him unless his portfolio was losing money, but something was. Once we exhausted all other possibilities and put him on Tylan with his meals, we have way fewer issues. Still an occasional morning with gurgles or soft poop, but nothing like we used to deal with.

Hooks are a PITA to get rid of. I cleared up a dog with a cycle of worming 4 days week one, 2 days week two, 2 days week three and 1 day week four. I repeated the process two months later and again a month later.

I don't even know if it is actually worms. When he was at the rescue he tested positive for hooks, the panacured him. When I got him I panacured again as that's what they said to do. He has had his stool tested 4 different times, 3 different vets and they all came back negative.

I will talk to the vet when I see her mid April for his vaccines to see what she thinks in regards to parasites.

For now I think I'm going to focus on his diet. We haven't been as strict as we should be when it come to table scraps and people food. So for now-it's his dry food only. And I'm going to try the olewo carrots-I just bought a bag and lots of you guys have had great results.

Hooks are notorious for NOT showing in fecal tests. They are also notorious for being HARD to eradicate and require repeated and consist worming.

Hmmm thats good to know. Good thing you finally got rid of those buggers. What worming schedule/regimen did you follow to finally get rid of them? Hes really sensitive so I dont want to over-do it :/

 

Obviously when I see the vet I will ask about it too.

We did 3 days Panacur each 3 weeks for a total of 3 treatments. Then 3 months later when he had soft poos again 3 days Panacur each 3 weeks for 2 additionnal treatments. But like I said, fecals were negative, so we did not know what he had, but Panacur seemed to fix him up.

 

Hopefully the carrots works for you It does help to settle the stomach.

Okay great, thanks! I will talk to the vet about this before treating.

Also, he could be eating stuff outside now that everything is warming up-Im going to start muzzling him when I let him out again...just to be sure.

He has been fine the past couple days, solid poo, no grumblys, had an appitite in the AM... then this morning had grumbles, soft poo, etc. So maybe its something as simple as eating icky stuff.

Perhaps try keeping a calendar for him. Mark whether it's good poo or soft morning and night. And also record what else's he's having, whether he was outside unsupervised (I have it on good authority that rabbit poo is a delicacy), and what meds he's getting. (Include his heartworm meds, vitamins, everything.)

 

I had a boy we put on a very small maintenance dose of metronidazole after his poo diary one summer revealed that we'd give the prescribed metronidazole like clockwork, finish a round, see good poos for four days, and then face diarrhea all over again. Treat him again; four good days; disaster. When I showed the vet the calendar, we put him on the maintenance dose (I think it was half a pill every other day), and the diarrhea stopped and didn't come back.

And about the carrots: we've started them here because the girl has dry skin.We're going on three weeks now, and she adores them--more excited about dinner with carrots than about any other meal. Her poo normally was okay, but now it's solid, well-formed, and pretty much perfect. Orange, but perfect.

_{Ugh, I know exactly what you are going through. I have been through the same thing with Slick. His poo has been an issue for years and late last year we treated over and over for hooks. Just about a month ago, we started him on the Olewo carrots and it's absolutely amazing the difference it has made. I hope Fusion has the same results. Good Luck!}
