Large Bruise On Neck After Blood Donation

Hutch and Tibbs donated blood at OSU on Friday for the second time. Hutch has been very nervous about donating - of course he is the worrier of the two litter mates. This morning I noticed a large bruise on Hutch's neck. He is eating, acting normal and his gums look fine. Is this something to worry about? He is a cow dog, so his neck is almost bald to begin with which makes the bruise look awful - angry and reddish purple.

I would post pix but I can't seem to figure out how.

Sounds like they did not keep pressure on the site after removing the needle. You may see the bruise get larger and pool further south before it gets reabsorbed.

Can you email a photo to the clinic?

It's not something to be concerned about, but you might want to use a harness instead of a collar if you can--just until the bruise fades.

It never hurts to check with the vet, but I've had this happen (rarely) when giving blood myself and it hasn't been a cause for alarm. At least in my case, it looks horrible, but isn't painful the way a normal bruise would be.

This happened to Jake once, and it went away in a few days. He's really dark, so it wasn't as noticeable. I would say if it starts to happen every time that would be cause for concern and I would think twice about his donating. Thanks for doing it though! Do your boys get a special treat afterwards? Jake always gets a small fast food hamburger :)
