Guest chigal950
Elliott decided to take a hard run after breakfast today. This isn't normal for him, he was really excited that the ground was so soft from the rain. As soon as I realized it was too soon after eating, I stopped him, but he'd already had a few good laps at that point. I know and have refreshed myself on the signs of bloat, and am watching him carefully. He's fine at the moment. I was unable to find advice indicating how quickly the signs of bloat might emerge. My question is - Is this a situation where it could show up in a day or two, or would it typically present within minutes or a few hours if there is something wrong? I know that you have to get to the vet immediately if it happens.

Batmom
Next couple hours. ETA: Usually a run right after eating isn't a big deal. Not what you want to happen but usually no big deal. I would worry more if the dog were, say, running the fence line and barking at the neighbor's dog, chasing a squirrel, etc. to the point of exhaustion. silverfish
What Batmom said. I don't fret overmuch about this kind of thing, but I do make sure they're not panting when I feed them and won't let DH (who does not understand) feed them within half an hour of walking out, even though they are old and don't dash about like a youngster. Sometimes it happens that they do go straight out and run about madly in the garden, or come in and suck down a ton of water, but I've never had any symptoms here.Keep a close eye on him and let the vet know immediately if his behaviour looks at all odd or he looks uncomfortable, but he'll probably be fine. Guest chigal950
Thanks. I had some things lined up for the day but am going to stay home this morning just in case. He seems fine. I appreciate your feedback!
Guest zombrie
I lost my GSD Kodie to bloat 2 weeks ago. She took a big drink of water and within 20 minutes she was in excruciating pain and needed to be put to sleep. It happens very quickly. Too quickly
greysmom
Bloat is really the build up of gas in the stomach. That being said, the exercise post-eating isn't about "bloat" but about the "torsion" that can occur from running. The stomach can get flipped over during exercise and the normal gas can't pass on it's own. I always keep some Gas-X on hand, just in case, but haven't had to use it. He's probably going to be fine. Unless a dog has eaten a huge amount, or gulped down a gallon of water after, a short run after dinner shouldn't be an issue. One of mine used to do it regularly and never had a problem.
