Guest fastcasper Posted April 1, 2014 Share Posted April 1, 2014 Hi all, As we all know, most greyhounds do not have the best teeth but my girl (Wynnie) takes it to a new level. When I adopted her and she had her dental (before adopting), they pulled 4 little teeth. I took her to my vet when I got her and she said her teeth were bad. A few months later she had another dental and 23 (yes, twenty three) teeth were pulled!!! She had 14 teeth in her mouth, and most of them are in the front plus her canines. I took her in for her physical recently and knew she would need a dental (it's been two years). It again looks like she is going to lose her remaining teeth. My vet really hopes not to have to pull her canines because they are difficult to pull and she will have to adjust to not having them. Has anyone had to have their pup's canines extracted? Should she be put on Amicar? Any thoughts/suggestions/advice?? I am going to have a toothless grey, but at least she will not have gingivitis ever again! Thanks! Years ago one of my adopters had to have one of his greys canines pulled. He had it mounted and wore it as a necklace like one would do with a shark's tooth. It always sort of creeped me out. mom2four Posted April 1, 2014 Share Posted April 1, 2014 Our Ambi sounds the same. He had a dental before he came, then within two years he had 3 more dentals, loosing most of his back teeth. He still has his canines and some of his little front teeth. I am sure he will loose them at some point, nothing seems to help. It is gum disease and they are happier without the teeth. Ambi was eating kibbles again just a couple of days after his dental, albeit smaller in size (about 1/2 inch) and soaked in water. Good luck, and yes I would give Amicar, before the dental. greysmom Posted April 1, 2014 Share Posted April 1, 2014 They do just fine without any teeth. Some even eat small kibble (my dogs don't chew their kibbles anyway, they just inhale them!). Or you can whir it in a blender or food processor and make kibble dust. Amicar needs to be started a few days prior to surgery, and given for a few days after. Some people have had difficulty in finding it, so you might start calling around now. GreyKarma Posted April 1, 2014 Share Posted April 1, 2014 Molleigh just had 25 removed last friday....everything on top including K-9's went. Even though she always had bleeding gums she did not need the Amicar but the Dental Specialist had it on hand. She bleed very little for that many extractions, they did suture the area where the K-9's came out. Soaking her small kibble and putting it through the Ninja made a nice lickable slop....in a couple of weeks I will just soak it.. I got it from CVS with no problem. I may just give my vet it to have on hand if needed. I just worry about the K-9's not the little teeth in between. I think those are ready to come out. Gosh, all the brushing and dental treats did nothing. Her brother had beautiful teeth. Had 2 cleanings his whole life and not one tooth removed. I feel the K-9 are going to be bleeders since the roots are so deep. Thanks all! Maybe I will posted a pic of my beautiful toothless wonder! Kebo had his lower two canines extracted by a very experienced dentist and was under for 2 1/2 hours. The dentist had a very hard time and in the end he amputated the teeth at the jaw line because he was afraid he would fracture the lower jaw (a very contraversial move amongst his peers but everything turned out well in the end). We didn't use amicar but we did stop any kind of supplement (fish oil/baby aspirin) for about a week before the procedure. The vet said he bled "more than a Labrador" but not excessively. She is bouncing back nicely and carrying her ball around again. Thanks for all the good advice! Now I have to deal with a foster grey who has hookworm! I'm a newbie at hookworm!
