Guest grey_dreams Posted February 17, 2014 Share Posted February 17, 2014 Zhivaya goes for his first ever dental tomorrow. He didn't get one when he left the track. When he first came home, he was such a severe spook that it wasn't even possible to think about taking him to the vet right away. Then when I wanted to take him, life interfered (my parents had medical emergencies that took a lot of my time, and finances got really tight because I had to miss a lot of work to help them). So, finally, Zhivaya gets his dental. He was a crate chewer at the track, his teeth are worn and chipped, and I fear for his canines. But the vet said that his teeth weren't so bad for a greyhound (he is grade 2). The vet has Amicar on hand and is very familiar with anesthesia procedures for greyhounds, so he is in good hands. He too was a major crate chewer on the track. He has nothing but nubs for canines, and just one of his little front teeth. Poor boy also has a chip on one of his middle upper teeth with the pulp exposed. So, I'll be thinking good thoughts for Zhivaya (beautiful name, BTW) and please hope for the same over here! They extracted one tooth (the very back tooth on the top), and one of the molars was actually broken off but the roots were still in the gum/jaw, so they went in and removed those too. The two canines on the top are fine. The two on the bottom are not bad enough to remove (still have intact "wear enamel" and dentin), but they do recommend doing root canals on both in the future. They are both really ground down into hooks because he obviously just used to hook those two teeth on the crate wires and grind away. Anyway, he's doing fine, happy to be home in his bed, and he's crashed out for now. We'll try a little food later and he has meloxicam for pain.
