EddiesMom15
I have a new foster, Zippy. He came to my group Sunday, was neutered, cat-tested and came to me Monday! Zippy is a sweet guy--bit of a doofus--but has yet to understand he doesn't have to mark every vertical surface. EVERY vertical surface. If I'm not watching him, he has to be crated. Can anyone recommend a belly band maker in the Midwest? Will his marking behaviour stop/slow down when the testerone in his system lessens? TIA! Quote You! Out of the gene pool! Houndtime
I have purchased from HOT (Heart of Texas Adoptions). All the profits go back to the group. This is Cheryl King's group. Well made and reasonable price. GeorgeofNE
In a pinch you can use a lightweight towel or a large t-shirt tied and wrapped in a clever manner! brandimom
I have been told it takes about a year after they have been neutered for the testerone to settle down.
NeylasMom
Long sleeved t-shirt. Roll/fold the "torso" of the shirt in sections, place that over his penis, then use the arms to tie in place (double knot). But hopefully you already know that the real solution to this problem is crating, tethering when he's not crated, and using a lot of PR (including yummy treats) when he goes outside. EddiesMom15
Thanks so much to all who have offered advice/suggestions. Zippy is the first foster I've had fresh off the track. He's crated anytime I can't see where he is, including nights and when I'm at work. Zippy goes outside as soon as he comes out of the crate. I get him out fast, so he doesn't have time to think about marking. Lots of praise and treats when he pees outside! Quote You! Out of the gene pool! JJNg
He's probably marking for a combination of reasons: 1) testosterone, 2) he's in a new location and likely somewhat stressed by the transition, and 3) he hasn't learned yet that he shouldn't mark indoors. Residual testosterone takes 4-6 weeks to leave the system and reach the low, baseline level seen in neutered dogs. So time will take care of reasons #1 and #2. And it sounds like you're off to a good start with training to address #3.
