Hollis
Just talked to my vet office. They are switching Deramaxx patients to Prevacox or Metacam. Can anyone give me feed back on these two? Norm has been on Deramaxx since the day he came home to us. Quite frankly I'm more then a little worried about switching. TIA. Quote My sweet angel Tanner-"Showoffs Magic" 79D-82695. DOB 7/22/99. Newgreymom
[*]Dylan had a horrible reaction to Previcox. Dr. Couto prescribed it, but all he did was drink and pee green. It can be one of the side effects. He does fine on Rimadyl. I guess it all depends on the dog and how they react.
Remolacha
Fletcher was on Metacam for years, and did fine. When I thought it was starting to be less effective, we switched to Rimadyl, which has also been fine. Prevacox was awful for him. Gave him runny poop, gurgly tummy, and made him very restless. He does have IBD, so runny poop/gurgly tummy are pretty normal for thing that don't agree.
tbhounds
Not a huge fan of previcox. I would try Metacam or rimadyl- both can given once a day.
PatricksMom
Meloxicam here, no problems and it can be purchased inexpensively from a human pharamacy. Guest BradyzMommy
Brady died because of the reaction his liver had to Previcox. I am not a fan.
Hollis
welp, that was all the info I needed. No Previcox. Period. Thanks. (btw, I called my vet to ask about their current supply of Deramaxx and they said the only prob dosage is 75 and something else. Its still available in 100. And as Norm gets 50 a day, we just buy the 100's and split. As a matter of fact we further split the 50 half in half and he gets 25 with breakfast and 25 with dinner. Soooo, I guess its not the Deramaxx that the issue but the dosage?) Quote My sweet angel Tanner-"Showoffs Magic" 79D-82695. DOB 7/22/99. Gotcha Day 6/20/05. Bridge Day 3/11/10. Hubcitypam
Meloxicam here, no problems and it can be purchased inexpensively from a human pharamacy. Ditto. It's a pill so you don't have to mess with the liquid.
Guest Fasave
Not a huge fan of previcox. I would try Metacam or rimadyl- both can given once a day. I've had a few of my pups on Previcox with no issues. TBnounds, why not a fan? Just curious as it is the anti-inflamatory my vet most often recommends.
Guest twoskinnydogs
Meloxicam is the better choice, and its available as a generic at most human drug stores in pill form. Emma was on this for months before she passed with no side effects at all.

PatricksMom
Adding, my dog had a bad (fortunately not long-term) reaction to Rimadyl. Quote Beth, Petey (8 September 2018- ), and Faith (22 March 2019). DesiRayMom
Last year, I had Desi on Metacam (the liquid). He did great. Due to financial constraints, asked vet for script to human pharmacy for Meloxicam......in our case, the human generic did not work nearly as well. I could really tell a difference. Now he's on Carpaquin (NutriMaxx's version of Rimadyl.... does not come in chewables, but half the price) and is doing well. Quote Blessed is the person who has earned the love of an old dog. JJNg
For anyone considering the human generic form of Metacam (meloxicam), please read this thread. From what I've seen, many (most?) of the reported cases of bad reactions to meloxicam in dogs were ones on the human generic, rather than the veterinary liquid forumulation, which allows for more accurate dosing. Guest Energy11
My Staggerlee can't take Deramaxx. It really upsets his GI tract, even with giving him Sucralafate (lines the stomach) first. We switched to Metacam, and he seems to do well with it. He has bad arthritis. Good Luck!.
Hollis
color me annoyed. Just called vet to get refill of the Deramaxx they said was not going to be an issue and guess what.....out of stock. Wont have it until July. Dammit. I told them I refused Previcox. Looks like it will be Metacam and we'll have to do a 3-4 day wash out. My poor Bubba. He's been on almost half his life. I HATE that we have to do this now. Just-DAMMIT. Quote My sweet angel Tanner-"Showoffs Magic" 79D-82695. DOB 7/22/99. Gotcha Day 6/20/05. Bridge Day 3/11/10. Guest Mom2Comet
Hmmmm...we've used Previcox in the past without incident. Or so I think. Nup was on it for a few days before her dental and she's not eating now. She can eat - doesn't vomit - but doesn't want to eat. Every day she gets pickier and refuses most food. Now I'm worried about the Previcox. Ugh.
Hollis
Finally some good news. The vet is getting a shipment of Deramaxx on Tues. 100mg. Norm is rxd for 50 a day, but the last 3 has been 25 a day as Ive been trying to prolong how long he would be on it. He will be without tomorrow and Monday, but hopefully because we tapered him down the last 3 days to 25 it wont be so drastic. And we'll start him back at 25 and see how he does. The vet is only giving out 15 at a time, but that should last us 2 months. Had I switched to Previcoxx, which seems to be nsaid of choice, there would have been a wash out period anyway. I'll actually get him back on meds 3 days sooner now! I feel SO much better! Quote My sweet angel Tanner-"Showoffs Magic" 79D-82695. DOB 7/22/99. Gotcha Day 6/20/05. Bridge Day 3/11/10.
