Ponchie's Eye

Recommended Posts

Woke up this morning to Ponchie's left eye almost closed and swollen., In a human world, it looks like a black eye, It's swollen and puffy but not black and blue on the outside.

He is a major crazy boy. I mean crazy so it is possible he hurt himself. I want to make sure there isn't something medical I should be concerned about, other than a brusied eye.

No thoughts other than perhaps he bumped himself on the corner of a table or something??? I doubt there are any bugs around this time of year but I know some spider bites can cause major swelling. Hopefully others have some better ideas as I'm not really sure what to do with it.

Several years ago my Mastiff was stung by a bee on/around his eye, and it looked exactly like this. Im guessing this probably wasnt the case since I see you live in NY and I doubt there are any bees out this time of year.

I hope your boy is feeling better soon.

I don't really have any advice to give, but I suspect (especially considering he's, er... a lively boy :P) that he probably bumped it. I always worry when it comes to the eyes, I don't like to take any chances, so if it's not better in a day or so I would probably call the vet to ask about picking up some eye drops. However, I would definitely give it some time, since it's swollen but not red on the inside. It could be a bite, as other have suggested, or most likelyt a bump.

Poor sweetie. :kiss2

It looks more swollen above his eye than below it--although that could just be the angle of the photo). A dog's frontal sinus is in that above-the-eye area. I don't know if you'll be able to see it, but I found this image.

It could be a bite or bump. I'd apply some cool compresses to it a few times today, and see how it is tommorrow. Eyes are never anything to ignore, though. If it doesn't look any better by tomorrow, I'd have a vet take a look. Good Luck!

My only concern is that whatever caused the swelling may have also scratched the eye and if so, may need ointment to make sure that it doesn't get infected.

Most times a vet needs special equipment to see if the eye lens has been scratched but sometimes, you can see a bit of a wave on the eye if you look at it in different angles and that could be an indication of a scratch.

By any chance, do you think another dog might have scratched him with a paw?

Anything is possible how it could have happened. RE: another dog, etc.

We have been around them 24/7 since Friday and Ponch is not usually too far from my butt!:lol Unless he is running track around the dining room table or flying up and down the stairs!:eek

As of this evening, I would say it's 60% + better.

If for any reason it looks any worse tomorrow, I will bring him in.

Thanks!
