RaineysMom
well, we're still here We had intended on leaving later this morning but it ended up taking us 7 hours to remove the runners we put down in the house we're in (a good friend's house, they generously let us stay here!! ) so we'll leave first thing in the morning. His hock area looked to be a bit better earlier, but I just looked and it's swelling back up. I'm so discouraged and so very worried. He is not putting ANY weight on that leg now, and his other leg (his whole back side really, he's going to be 10 on Xmas Day) is so weak, he cannot hardly walk and I honestly don't know how the hell we're going to get him home. :( thanks again for the good thoughts and prayers. I cannot WAIT to get home. I want my baby well again. ps. Rainey, if you're there, please keep an eye out for your favorite boy. I know you watch over him. silverfish
Oh no ... well, it's a good thing if his temperature is still normal, hang onto that thought. As to getting him home, I don't suppose there are any GUR folk around that could help you out with some of your baggage so you can make Nube comfy in the back? Guest burgerandfrey
I hope he recovers soon! One of our greys stepped on something while wading in a creek once. It punctured the webbing between her toes and got badly infected. Her paw was very swollen. We had her on antibiotics for awhile and also put her foot in a warm bath a couple of times a day. Then we would dry it and wrap with a clean bandage. It took time to heal and for the swelling to go down. Eventually she started walking on it without a limp, but as soon as she would see a neighbor of ours she would hold her paw up just to get a little more sympathy

KF_in_Georgia
Another possibility: if you aren't already using a roof-rack for stuff, maybe you can rent a rack to clear space for Rainey. kickchick2000
Milky Way had a front leg that swelled up like a Mastiff's this past April. He had a terrible time walking and had to be carried pretty much everywhere for about a week. Your photo looked a lot like what my boys front leg looked like, just tons of swelling. We did steroid shots, pain meds, antibiotics, a course of prednisone, the whole nine yards. My vets were SO worried because the swelling was so intense they were concerned about it affecting his circulation. After about 4-5 days on the meds the swelling slowly started going down, mostly likely due to the pred. Milky Way had NO appetite during his episode, at one point the only food I could get in him was cheesecake from the cheesecake factory. To this day we still have no idea what caused it but the vets seem to think snake bite or possibly bug bite( no wounds were ever really found but he had one little spot of darker skin). Lots of good thoughts headed your way and hopefully the swelling will start getting better. GreytHurleyDawg
Oh Nubers!!! What a rotten vacation for you!! Come back soon to the cold, north lands where we don't have those stinging buggers or those thorny seeds!!! Safe travels! I agree that getting the swelling down is ideal. Stop often and get heat or cold onto it, whichever helps the swelling. I think the U-Haul folks have racks for rent. there's actually a TON of room in the back, it's an Odyssey and all the seats are out, and there's just a suitcase on the one side door, the rest is open. The problem is the crates are on the bottom, and a bunch of blankets and then 3 Costco dog beds on top -- very, very comfy and room, just not as stable as a non-moving solid floor (and we can't help the non-moving part, being in the car!). I'm just worried that having such a hard time standing and moving will cause him to fall if he gets up and moves around at all, which he WILL, and we can't help we'll just have to hope for the best and try to get home as quick as possible but still safely. The car is packed, we just have a couple more things to do here and we'll be off. I think this will be the LONGEST drive of our lives thanks again guys for all the ideas and good thoughts!!! We really, REALLY appreciate it. Tallgreydogmom
When we lived in Florida one of our greyhounds got a thorn in her foot. It swelled up so much it was the size of a deer's foot. She was fawn so it looked like that also. It was something like a 1 inch thorn. I wanted to add we soaked the swollen thorn foot in Epson salts also. I hope the swelling will go down soon. We also put a hot pack on it. Better known as a washcloth run under the hot water. Quote Then God sent the Greyhound to live among man and remember.
