SIGreyLady Posted June 1, 2011 Share Posted June 1, 2011 Went to the vet. ophthalmologist at Red Bank today and the diagnosis is confirmed - Pannus. He did say we caught it early and prescribed prednisolone eye drops and said prognosis is excellent that it won't get worse. It doesn't bother Kelsey in the least . Besides the drops and bringing her back for a recheck in a month is there anything anyone else does for their hounds? I did check past posts and looked up greyhound articles on it that say not to expose to direct sunlight. What are your experiences with this condition? We also caught it early and the prednisolone drops helped immensely in getting it under control. But once it was controlled, the vet moved her to cyclosporine 0.2% drops (also available in ointment). This is the same ingredient in Restasis which is used to treat dry eyes in humans. This regimen has worked very well for Grace, with occasional flare-ups that seem to be caused by stress (like when Mom goes away). Then we return to the prednisolone to clear it up. I tried doggles and hats on Grace, but she hates them. For the most part, I try to keep her inside when the sun is at it's brightest. He told us not to waste our money on Doggles. Dogs usually hate them and pull them off. We definitely see more redness in Bee's eyes after sun exposure, though. Our veterinary ophthalmologist also told us that there are two main variations of Pannus, the German Shepherd variety and the greyhound variety. The GH variety is usually treated less aggressively than the GS variety. The Pred. acetate usually keeps the GH variety in check. From time to time Bee gets flare ups of terrible redness and eye itching. We treat this, for a short period of time, more aggressively with Cyclosporine. Then we go back to the Pred. Acetate. Our ophthalmologist told us that treating Pannus too aggressively can lead to painful corneal abrasions. Hugs to you and to Kelsey, Mimi. It doesn't seem to bother Kelsey at all - no itching or squinting. i don't think she would wear doggles either but hats......maybe I'll try to find a nice ballcap for her. We caught it early too....I just had her at NGAP for a dental and the vet said that her eye looked really good. She told me that I didn't need to use the prednisone drops every day and just watch for over exposure to the sun. My friend gave me a cute little hat (baseball style) with a wide brim. I normally don't put it on her for her daily walks or if she's just going to be outside for a short period of time and she's done fine. Eventually had to put cyclosporine drops & steroid drops in his eyes twice a day but for the frist 2 yrs or so after diagnosis didn't even have to do that.. He never had any problems with it at all. Different vets have different opinions on treatment, if and when certain drops should be used. As far as I know the jury is still out and it is a judgement call. She's mostly on drops once a day in both eyes, but if her eye starts to get red I will up the drops to twice a day until it settles. Other than the scar on her cornea from her first flare up she has no visible signs. It hasn't slowed her down. We live in AZ and she's got a dog door so she's exposed to lots of direct sunlight. It hasn't seemed to make anything worse, but I do try and limit her outside time during the day. In summer it's not a big issue cause most of the time it's too hot in the daytime to go outside. Sadie will tell me every morning if I forget to give her her drops. Just be sure and treat with a cookie as well as drops and you should be fine. Vet had us on 2x day drops, then down to 1, now once a week or so. But we didn't see an optho doc...just our regular vet. Would like to try the goggles when we're out at tracks in the bright sun but at this point I just try to keep her shielded from the bright sun. She is a GP vet, but said if we couldn't get it under control she would refer me. She is, however, our group's recommended vet and has five greyhounds of her own, so I have great faith in her. It is controlled with pred acetate drops once a day and cyclosporine drops twice a day. Interestingly, she had an allergic reaction to one of the cyclosporine drops that was compounded in corn oil. The redness is down and the cloudy spot seems smaller too . iI usually take her out in the early am, late afternoon/early evening and before bed. I still want to find a hat for her - something like a ball cap. Any ideas?? She was at the Greysave picnic last weekend and I saw a lot of dogs walking around with their new visors on display. She's great! I don't think it was treated in her former home, and it has spread further in one eye than the other, but her vision does not seem to be affected thankfully. And while there is opaque scarring, she hasn't had any redness or flareups. She gets eye drops twice a day. If you caught it early you should be fine. Chase's eye drops are Neo/Poly/Dex. (Neomycin / Polymyxin B Sulfates / Dexamethasone). How does that differ from the Prednisolone and Cyclosporine drops? When Comet had an ulcer on his cornea right before Dewey one year I bought him a pair from EBay (less $$) and he wore them the whole time whenever we were put and about.
