Elmer The Guinea Pig- January 10, 2011

My sweet guinea pig Elmer passed away this afternoon. After recovering from an infection, it came back and he just wasn't strong enough to get through this one.

14 months ago I walked into the humane society. Elmer, along with his brother, was the loudest guinea pig in the building. I fell in love with both of them and that day they came home with me. Little did I know that Elmer would be a shy, sweet, and loving little guy.

On December eve of 2009, Elmer's brother Peachy became sick overnight and died that evening. To say he was lonely would be an understatement. However, he got through, and we adopted a younger brother for him, Shaggy.

Shaggy was and still is quite the handful. Elmer was a patient big bro to him and let Shaggy have his way. Now, Shaggy is murmuring for his friend, and I'm sure Elmer knows he's missed.

Goodnight, my chubby guinea pig. You were there for me every day for so long, listened to everything I had to say to you, helped me practice Shakespeare lines- which I still remember. You ran around my feet while I learned how to solve a Rubiks cube. You were the eat-everything huggable friend. Elmer, I will miss you so much.

I'm so sorry. I have no doubt Elmer has left a hole in your heart 10 times his own size.

It's a shame the little ones don't stay with us longer, isn't it? I had 2 mice that were wonderful, and I only got to have them for under two years. Just doesn't seem fair.

I'm so sorry you lost your sweet little Elmer.

Deeply sorry for your loss of wee Elmer. We had guinea pigs when I was a child in every color and hair type imaginable and each definitely had their own special personality.
