Protein Losing Enteropathy

Carol - I am sorry to read about poor Mat's intestinal woes. My (almost) 12-1/2 yr old girl Holly had intense vomiting one morning in July. Long story and several trips to the ER and vet ... but she was dx'd with an ulcer (noted on abdominal ultrasound) and elevated kidney values. Her regular vet said she has PLN. The ulcer most likely is related to the kidney issues.

ER vet prescribed several drugs for the ulcer but after a few days Holly made it crystal clear she had zero interest in taking any meds. Locked up the jaws. It wasn't worth stressing her out and alienating her so I backed off. I recalled reading about Manuka Honey on GT, search the health forum, and decided to give it a try.

I am pleased to report the honey has been a lifesaver. I give Holly a little less than a teaspoon before breakfast and dinner. She clearly is feeling better and there has been no more vomiting.

I believe she also has absorption issues as well. Anyway, Holly is stable for now and eating with great enthusiam. Just started her on Purina NF (kidney) kibble but mixing it in with a variety of regular canned food (which I warm up slightly in the micro). I am transitioning her food slowly. Baby steps. All the prescription food in the world won't help if she won't eat it. I would like to home cook for her - but so much to read and calculate!

Anyway, the honey is certainly worth a try. I purchased a jar for $17+ at the local health food store.

Oh, also because Holly won't willingly take pills (which the vet and I discussed) we agreed to try her on Standard Process Canine Renal Support powder (and also Immune Support), which I sprinkle on her food. She is fine with that - just NO PILLS!

Good luck to you and Mat. :)

Had the blood work done Minday-all good results. His weight on Monday was 50.2, took him back today for weigh in & was 48.2 lbs. He has eaten the past 3 days. Started off with 10 pieces of kibble, then about 1 c and today 1 1/2 c. He is on 20 mg prednisone am & pm and 10 mg Famotidine. So far so OK- just a day at a time!

Thanks for the information regarding the food and 'your' dogs illnesses. Hope everyones hounds get better.

Update on Matlock

The Specialist suggested a UA to determine if Matt had a fungus-negative test.

He is on Reglan 5mg 3 times/day for 7 days(last day) and 60 mg of Prednisone.

I was hoping, as was the specialist this would increase his appetite. No luck.

Took him to the local Vet for weekly weight check 47.7 pounds.

We go back to the specialist on Tuesday & I've requested a 'heart to heart' talk.

I feel, though I'd like Matt to be with me a few more years-the time has come to be

a responsible owner & make the most difficult decision. I will bring him home & have

a neighbor dig grave & when we are ready we will be ready.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts & hints.

Keeping you in my thoughts. I went through something similar a couple years ago (IBD, PLE, PLN)with a very special grey. Sometimes all we can do is love them, hold them and let them know they added something special to this world and your life. Take care.

I am sorry you are going through this. I walked this path a few years ago when Clay was diagnosed with IBD and PLE. We were fortunate that medication and a prescription novel single protein dogfood helped him regain weight and increase his dangerously low protein level for almost a year. Then we too had to make the difficult decision you are facing when he spiraled down hill. Sending prayers for you and Matlock.

Final update, went to the specialist, he now weighs 44lbs. He will be 10 on 11/11. he's been

my dog partner for 6 yrs. The specialist feels the same as I do, the IBD is not treatable any more.

So in the near future when the time is right I'll be sending him over the Rainbow Bridge.

I know I've done all I can with the expert guidance of my local Vet and the Specialist.

Thanks for your encouragement, information, thoughts and prayers.

I'm sorry, Carol. Will you give him a scritch for me and tell him how handsome he is?

I'm so sorry for you and Matlock. I'm just beginning to go down with road with my Dorie, and hope I get as long as you two had together after his diagnosis.
