Thanks for the suggestions, Sam's didn't carry so I never called Walmart. CVS didn't carry & told me it didn't come in pill form.

I'm still looking.

Thanks,

Sunny was on budesonide and it was no where near that expensive. I think I got it at a compounding pharmacy in Yakima (Sunny was on so many meds though I can't remember but it had to have been at this pharmacy or at Costco) - Medicine Mart (509) 966-9672 ‎ Call them and they can give you a price. They can ship so that shouldn't be a problem.

Cutie was on budesonide for a while too and I got it at WalMart. My Derm. vet wrote prescriptions for everything so I could take advantage of the $4 price at Walmart.

Edited to add: I believe if WalMart doesn't carry a drug they will special order if it is available to them.

You might want to see if Roadrunner pharmacy carries it. It's not an inexpensive drug but, for my pup it was a lifesaver as pred stopped working for him , I bought mine from a local compounding pharamacy. He was taking 3mgs capsules but, we were able to reduce the frequency to once every 3 days.

Thank you tbhounds, Chicocat, and zoolaine. I'm off tomorrow so I'll be able to do more checking.

My local pharmacy said they could compound but for 3 mg tabs for 30 day supply it would be near $100.00.

So I'm still looking.

Tbhounds , you give me hope with you dog taking 3 mg every 3rd day.

Thanks again for the suggestions & help,

I called 8 different compounding & regular pharmacies today. The place I found is Pet Health Pharmacy, the best price for 3 mg 30 capsules including shipping less than

$40. I'm so glad I continued to look.

I couldn't figure out how to edit.

The Specialist recommended feeding 1) venison 2) rabbit or 3) duck.

So now I'm on the search for anyone one of these novel proteins. My big

problem is whatever food can't have any beef or chicken products in the

ingredients.

I'll be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks,

Hey, there, just wanted to say I'm sorry to hear that this is happening. I don't have any advice at this point. Wish I did.

Natural Balance has a limited ingredient Sweet Potato & Venison, and one Potato & Duck. Pinnacle has Duck & Potato as well (http://www.pinnaclepet.com/Canine/dog_food_duck.htm). I don't know what level of protein your vet wants you to feed -- none of these are real high; if you need higher, could supplement with some plain venison or duck meat.

My IBD boy did very well on Natural Balance's Duck and Potato. Remember it's not just novel protein you need to look for but, a novel carb source too. IBD is a pita but, it with the proper treatment it can be controled. My boy, Poots was in "remission" with the help of diet and drugs for 3 years before it morphed into cancer-- they were for the most part 3 very good years. He was such a good boy- I miss him.

Batmom and tbhounds, thanks for the info on foods. Batmom the vet has never mentioned a specific

protein level. Tbhounds the vet has never mentioned anything regarding carbs. I will certainly ask

when I call on Monday.

Unfortunately what I've found with most foods is they have either egg or chicken fat in them. So that

makes it difficult to find food.

I appreciate your time & thoughtfulness about sharing.

Tbhounds I'm sorry for the loss of your hound.

Just an update on Matlock, he has been on the budesonide for 2 1/2 weeks the 1st week he was on both prednisone & budesonide, then I was directed to stop the prednisone. I have noticed, every change of medication doseage, he quits eating for several days, then it's OK.

Well the same thing happened once I stopped the prednisone. his desire to eat nearly vanished. Monday he ate a little, when I got home from work, after letting the hounds outside , Matt came in & went directly to his food & finished it(yeah!)

So far each day has been the same... seems the medication is working(fingers crossed)

He is engaging the other hounds in play racing around the yard(4 acres).

So at this moment I'm thrilled.

Thanks to all for sharing information & guidance with me.

Just a quick update on Matlock. He's been on the Bunesodine, 3mg for

Several months, last weekend he started again with loss of interest in

eating. Has had some diarrhea & vomiting. Today he hasn't eaten for 1 week, probably down to 50 lbs.

Looks bad, spoke with specialist now back on prednisone 20mg twice a day

off bunesodine. Drinking & urinating. Having blood work, CBC, Chem panel and

Lytes drawn on Monday.

Mat will be 10 in November, he did race before I adopted him, I think about

110 races. We've had each other for about 5+ years.

Sorry his health backtracked. Sadly, I think you'll see your boy loss more weight from the pred. They tend to loss muscle mass rather quickly from prednisone. Not meaning to question your vets actions but, I don't understand his decision to switch back to pred as budesonide is so much stronger and is targeted to the gi tract. If you know I would love to find out his reasoning.

I feel I must mention this- my ibd dog did really well on budesonide for years--we were able to reduce the frequency of the budesonide to 3mgs every 3 days. He was really stable until one day he lost his appetite and started vomiting- long story short his ibd morphed into cancer (adenocarcinoma) and I had to let him go. I hope this is not your guys case. Please keep us posted!

Tbhounds, since his original weight loss 2 yrs ago, he never regained a lot of

muscle. I believe the specialist had me return to the Pred to stimulate his

appetite. Took him to the local vet, today's weight 50.2 lbs.

I think there is more going on than the IBD, he looks worse this time than

before.

Sorry for your loss.

Thanks for you thoughts for Mat.

Can you cook him some rabbit or quail- something novel- just to get him to eat more? You can also try Z/D- perhaps your vet can give you a sample? Another commercial food that many are having success with is Purina HA- maybe your vet can order it or give you a script for it so you can purchase it from another clinic that carries it. You can also try IVD's hypo's line-- Duck and potato, venision and potato....

Glad he's starting to have interest in food again no matter how slight it is.

Tbhounds, the specialist has restricted the Protien source to fish, venison, kangaroo or rabbit. No beef, bison, chicken, lamb or duck or similar protiens. The problem is most unique Protien source kibbles have chicken fat or eggs Out of 50+ foods,i'cw looked at, I've only found 5 without any of the restricted protien. I'm still looking.

I don't know how often IBD is correlated with intestinal malabsorption, but I suspect it's somewhat frequent. With IM the gut loses its ability to process B-vitamins, so they can no longer be provided by food. Our Spencer has both IM and IBD, and he gets a subcutaneous B-12 shot every two weeks, for life. It's easy and cheap, and it really promotes appetite and improved neulogical functioning. It seems like such a small thing, a B vitamin, but it confers such a huge benefit! I wonder if it might help with Matlock's appetite. (Not that you don't still have to deal with the food issue, of course.)

Greyfest, when I speak eith the specialist again I'll mention

IM.

Tbhounds, the specialist called this am, all blood work great. I asked about changing protein source & he said let's get him eating first.

If he won't eat on his own, I would suggest syringe-feeding. I think syringe-feeding is why Chase (age 14) is still alive. She has early stage renal failure (possible GN and PLN). She would go on hunger strikes too, but I can't let her go more than a day or else she goes rapidly downhill and the weight just melts off her. The longer she goes without eating, the worse she feels, and the harder it is to get her to start eating again. I have found though, if I syringe one or two meals into her, and supplement with Pepcid for her tummy, I can get her eating again on her own. I bought a $15 blender at Walmart and a $3 feeding syringe at Petco, makes all the difference. With the blender you can customize your own foods too (if your dog is restricted to certain proteins). I put her kidney prescription food in the blender and mix it with Ensure and water. I also cook meats for her, that she will always eat. I have heard that vitamin B injections sometimes stimulate appetite too. Good luck!

I would ask your vet about trying one of the prescription diets that I mentioned before--Z/D , HA or one of the IVD diets-- they are designed for allergies and conditions like IBD.
