Guest Nilesdad
I'm looking for a greyhound poem that was written from the greyhound's perspective, I think. It was a memorial poem, author unknown. It talked about how the greyhound could now run pain free, and the mother/father/owner should not worry any more. Any ideas? Thank you so much for your help. 3DogNite
DON'T GRIEVE TOO LONG Don't grieve too long for now I'm free I've followed the path God set for me I ran to Him when I heard His call I swished my tail and left it all. I could not stay another day To bark, to love, to romp or play Games left unplayed must stay that way I found such peace, it made my day. My parting has left you with a void Please fill it with remembered joy A friendship shared, your laugh, a kiss Oh yes, these things I too shall miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow My life's been full, you've given so much Your time, your love and gentle touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief Don't lengthen it now with undue grief Lift up your head and share with me God wanted me, He set me free! ~ Author Unknown ~ Quote lorinda, mom to the ever revolving door of Foster greyhounds Always in my heart: Teala (LC Sweet Dream) , Pepton, Darbee-Do (Hey Barb) , Rascal (Abitta Rascal), Power (Beyond the Power), and the miracle boy LAZER (2/21/14), Spirit (Bitter Almonds) 8/
Guest Nilesdad
Thank you, 3Dog. That's not quite the one I'm remembering, but that's an excellent one to be sure. Does anyone have others? The reason for my search is obvious. My boy, Niles, is nearing 15 years young, and it seems these past few weeks have seen him encounter a few more difficulties. I don't know if we have a few years left or a few months, but these past weeks have left me very reflective of our countless wonderful times. I am thankful for every moment with him. Yet, I don't want to pen a quick remembrance when the time comes. I've put much effort into recounting those times, our laughs, our foibles, and I want to do the same with my memorial to him. I appreciate all thoughts and posts.
gazehund
There are many poems. Perhaps this is the one? I Stood By Your Bed I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep. I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear, "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here." I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea, You were thinking of the many times your hands reached out to me. I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore. I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more. I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care. I want to reassure you that I'm not lying there. I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key. I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me." You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair. I tried so hard to let you know that I was standing there. It's possible for me to be so near you everyday. To say to you with certainty, "I never went away." You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ... In the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you. The day is almost over... I smile and watch you yawning and say "goodnight, God bless, I'll see you in the morning." And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide, I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side. I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see. Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me. Author unknown
Guest GriffinsMom
These poems always bring tears to my eyes no matter how many times I read them When I Got My New Dog I asked for strength that I might rear him perfectly; I was given weakness that I might feed him more treats. I asked for good health that I might rest easy; I was given a "special needs" dog that I might know nurturing. I asked for an obedient dog that I might feel proud; I was given stubbornness that I might feel humble. I asked for compliance that I might feel masterful; I was given a clown so that I might laugh. I asked for a companion that I might not feel lonely; I was given a best friend that I would feel loved. I got nothing I asked for, But everything that I need. Author Unknow ONE BY ONE ... One by one, they pass my cage, Too old, too worn, too broken, they say. Way past his time, he can't run and play. They shake their heads and go on their way. A little old man, arthritic and sore, It seems that I am wanted no more. I once had a home, I once had a bed, A place that was warm, and where I was fed. Now my muzzle is grey, and my eyes slowly fail. Who wants a dog so old and so frail? My family decided I didn't belong, I got in their way, my attitude was wrong. Now I sit in this kennel, where day after day, The younger dogs are chosen and taken away. When I had almost come to the end of my rope, You saw my face, and again I knew hope. You saw past the grey, and legs wobbly with age, And felt I deserved life beyond this cage. You took me home, gave me food and a bed, And gently stroked my poor tired head. We snuggle and play, and you talk to me low, You love me so dearly, and make sure I know. I may have lived most of my life with another, But you outshine them with a love so much stronger. And I promise to return all the love I can give, To you, my dear person, as long as I live. I may be with you for a week, or for years, We will share many smiles, you will no doubt shed tears. And when the time comes, that God deems I must leave, I know you will cry, and your heart, it will grieve. And when I arrive at the Bridge, all brand new, My thoughts and my heart will still be with you. And I will brag to all who will hear, Of the person who made my last days so dear. crazygang
My husband wrote this after hearing of the passing of a friends greyhound the poem is called.... I'LL BE WAITING... Running fast, running free, That's how I wish you would remember me, I may have passed but certainly not gone, As thoughts of much happier times in your mind linger on, Days full of sunshine where we played until we dropped, Or tearing up the house on the days the rain refused to stop, From the cuddles on the sofa when you were feeling down, To all the adoration I gained when you walked me round the town, With you I had a joyful life and found so many friends, Many of whom you'll turn to now until your poor heart mends, You will laugh, you will cry that is the nature of the beast, But please don't mourn for too long for now I am at peace. Pepsi2004
I have a copy of one called: The Spirit of the Greyhound I was standing on a hillside In a field of blowing wheat, And the spirit of a Greyhound Was lying at my feet. He looked at me with kind dark eyes, Ancient wisdom showing through, In the essence of his being, I saw the love there too. His mind did lock upon my heart As I stood there on that day, And he told me of this story About a place so far away. As I stood upon that hillside In a field of blowing wheat, In a twinkling of a second His spirit left my feet. His tale did put my heart at ease, All my fears did fade away About what lay ahead of me On another distant day. "I live among God's creatures now In the heavens of your mind. So do not grieve for me, my friend As I am with my kind. My collar is a rainbow's hue, My leash is a shooting star. My boundaries are the Milky Way Where I sparkle from afar. There are no pens or kennels here For I am not confined, But I'm free to roam God's heavens Among the Greyhound kind. I nap the day on a snowy cloud Gentle breezes rocking me, And dream the dream of earthlings, And how it used to be. The trees are full of liver treats, And tennis balls abound, And milkbones line the walkways Just waiting to be found. There even is a ring set up, The grass all lush and green; And everyone who gaits around Becomes the Best of Breed. For we're all winners in this place; We have no faults, you see. And God passes out those ribbons To each one, even me. I drink from waters laced with gold, My world a beauty to behold; And wise old dogs form my pride To amble at my very side. At night I sleep in Angel's arms Her wings protedting me, And moonbeams dance around us As stardust falls on thee. So when your life on earth is spent And you stand at Heaven's Gate, Have no fear of loneliness --- For here, you know, I wait." Greytlady94
I have saved a lot of the stories and poems I've come across. Here are a couple of them. Beyond The Rainbow As much as I loved the life we had and all the times we played, I was so very tired and knew my time on earth would fade. I saw a wondrous image then of a place that's trouble-free Where all of us can meet again to spend eternity. I saw the most beautiful Rainbow, and on the other side Were meadows rich and beautiful -- lush and green and wide! And running through the meadows as far as the eye could see Were animals of every sort as healthy as could be! My own tired, failing body was fresh and healed and new And I wanted to go run with them, but I had something left to do. I needed to reach out to you, to tell you I'm alright That this place is truly wonderful, then a bright Glow pierced the night. 'Twas the Glow of many Candles shining bright and strong and bold And I knew then that it held your love in its brilliant shades of gold. For although we may not be together in the way we used to be, We are still connected by a cord no eye can see. So whenever you need to find me, we're never far apart If you look beyond the Rainbow and listen with your heart. Author Unknown From Your Greyhound At The Bridge My dearest master: Just when I thought that my life was over you rescued me. You took me into your home and you loved me, and made me a part of your family. You showed me that there was more to life then the kennel,a crate, the track or the back of a pick-up truck. You showed me what was allowed and what was not. You taught me how to climb stairs, and didn't get upset when I didn't get it right the first time. You gave me more toys then I have ever seen before. You let me sleep in your bed with you, and didn't get upset even when I tried to push you out. You gave me a special place in your heart, and more love then I thought was possible to give. For all of the things that you have given me, the only things that I could give you were all of my love and all of my companionship, and these things I gave to you willingly. Now my time with you has past and I have gone on to the bridge, but I just wanted to let you know, that when your time comes, I'll be waiting, I'll be waiting. I love you with all of my heart Your Greyhound I stood by Your Bed Last Night I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep. I could see that you were crying, you found it hard to sleep. I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear. "It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here." I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea. Be patient, live your journey out Then come home and be with me. LETTER FROM YOUR PET IN HEAVEN To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say. But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay. I'm writing this from the Bridge. Here I dwell with God above. Here there's no more tears of sadness Here is just eternal love. Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight. Remember that I am with you every morning, noon and night. That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through, God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you. It's good to have you back again, you were missed while you were gone. As for your dearest family, They'll be here later on." God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do. And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you. And when you lie in bed at night the day's chores put to flight, God and I are closest to you...in the middle of the night. When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years, because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears. But do not be afraid to cry: it does relieve the pain. Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain. I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned. If I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand. But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er. I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before. There are rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb; But together we can do it by taking one day at a time. It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too; That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you. If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain; Then you can say to God at night... "My day was not in vain." And now I am contented... that my life was worthwhile. Knowing as I passed along I made somebody smile. God says: "If you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low; Just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go. When you're walking down the street with me on your mind; I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind." "And when it's time for you to go... from that body to be free. Remember you're not going... you're coming here to me." Author Unknown Quote Greyhound angels at the bridge- Casey, Charlie, Maggie, Molly, Renie, Lucy & Teddy. Beagle angels Peanut and Charlie. And to all the 4 legged Bridge souls who have touched my heart, thank you. When a greyhound looks into you eyes it seems they touch your very soul. Guest FullMetalFrank
This is probably not the one you are looking for, but it is lovely, still... Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there. I did not die.
Chicocat
A very simple verse that meant so much to me when I lost Chico. In one of the stars I shall be living. In one of them I shall be playing. And so it will be as if all the stars were playing when you look at the sky at night. And when your sorrow is comforted you will be content that you have known me. You will always be my friend, and I yours. Quote Ann
Guest Nilesdad
Thank you, everyone, so very much. The one I was remembering was "The Spirit of the Greyhound" that Pepsi2004 shared. But they're all wonderful, and they all bring tears. Thank you for your time and efforts. May we all have need for these "later," rather than sooner.
