Coughing

Recommended Posts

Miss Pudge le mutt has been coughing on and off for the past 3 weeks.

It's a dry cough, kinda like a cat gakking a hairball.

It mostly happens when she gets up from laying down.

She has no fever, no running nose, eats and acts normal.

She is up to date on all shots. Stays home and is never around any other dogs but our own.

It is not a constant cough - she can be silent for hours.

She does have year round allergies to everything environmental.

From what I've read, coughing can be from:

kennel cough

allergies

something stuck in the throat

heartworms

heart problems

Since she doesn't cough all the time I think it may be difficult for the vet to diagnose. Any thoughts folks?

I'd still take her to a vet. A lot of those problems are diagnosed through tests, not just through taking a history of when the cough occurs, so they are not difficult to diagnose.

We have that cough here. We call it the "old lady cough" My friend's senior grey has the same cough. Vet check says not an issue, may be something allergy related or just an old lady cough. Is your dog on the senior side?

It would be ANY of what you listed. If it IS Kennel Cough, it is pretty easy to treat.

I'd get her to the vets, just to nail it down. SHE really IS a CUTE dog, by the way!

Good Luck and keep us posted!

I don't believe it would be kennel cough. I understand that they sounds like they are coughing up a lung and it is more constant. I am going through this with Star right now but she also has snot coming out of the left side of her cute little nose. Vet is waiting for cultures right now. They washed out her nose but it hasn't helped. I came home yesterday to find a long string of snot hanging out of her nose. Poor baby. Hands are handy. :) I am hoping they can grow something in the cultures because the next step will be a "Specialist". We all know what that means.

Could be a heart issue. Jam's was like that and it turned out to be fliud buildup around his heart. Usually more prevalent when he got up from resting and not all the time.

I know this is an older thread but I was wondering what the result of your vet visit was?

Spike has come down with almost identical symptoms. He's young (not quite 2 yet)

He doesn't have allergies as far as I can tell and he does get out around a lot of other dogs.

The cough started on Thursday but he seemed to be at normal activity levels.

Today the cough was about the same but he just looked like he didn't feel well and his nose started dripping a little.

I figured he was being so good, he must really be sick :violin Off to the vet we went.

Vet feels either kennel cough (has been vax'd for) or canine flu (not vax'd for)

He said there is a lot of doggie flu going around our area and it's hard to tell the difference in the early stages.

Spike's temp was on the high side of normal but not actually a fever.

He's now on abx and a cough medicine with orders to rest & get lots of fluid. Maybe I need to make some chicken soup?

Also said to stay away from other dogs until 1-2 weeks after symptoms are totally gone.

Sorry I didn't update this.

It was allergies. Her heart and lungs were fine. No kennel cough, no heartworms, no infection. By the beginning of the second day of taking Temaril the cough was gone. What threw me off was that she wasn't scratching much (she's allergic to grass). I only had to give her the Teramil a few days. Yesterday she had a flare up of the itchies and I started the Temaril again (one every 12 hours) and the itchies have nearly completely stopped. We've tried an assortment of prescription allergy meds and benedryl over the years, but the Temaril is the only thing that has worked.

I'd take her to the vet ASAP. Tara had a "hacking up a hairball cough" and xrays of her chest found massive amounts of fluid in her pleural cavity [the space between the organs and the chest wall]. Pleural effusion.

After consults with a heat specialist and numerous other tests, it was determined it wasn't heart disease, but chylothorax. The underlying cause is likely lung cancer though nothing is showing on her lungs at this time. We decided against a thoracotomy to determine for sure as we just want her to enjoy whatever time she may have left. Now we just have to go and get her chest drained every so often so she can breath [as the fluid constricts her lungs]. Earlier this week she had 3 litres of fluid drained.
