GreyPoopon
Friday Update: It turns out that the Wednesday am update was a bit optimistic. More often than not, Cora is not interested in climbing stairs. An attempt to have her join us at bed time did not go well. First she did not manage to get up the stairs on her own: on the first try she stopped, and on the second she lost control of her back legs (she was safe because I was holding her harness). When she got upstairs, she would not lie down. Eventually, I gave up and returned her to her crate. However, I think she's still getting better, albeit more slowly than she was. She saw the vet today--the same senior vet who did the initial examination. He asked me what had been happening, then did a fairly thorough exam. He found that her foot reflex (the one where the foot is set on the floor top down, and the dog should lift it back in position) has returned. I think it's still a bit slow in the back, but it's there, and the front looked good. He checked her spine and did not find any tenderness. Her heart and lungs are still OK. He also felt her repaired femur, and is satisfied that things are still in place. Fortunately, he did not repeat the horrid deep pain exam. He thinks she will continue to improve for 3-4 weeks, and doesn't need to see her again unless she has a setback. He said he thinks she will regain all of the lost function, and that we won't even be able to tell she had an FCE. :yay Edited July 3, 2009 by GreyPoopon Quote Standard Poodle Daisy (12/13) Missing Cora (RL Nevada 5/99-10/09), Piper (Cee Bar Easy 2/99-1/10), Tally (Thunder La La 9/99-3/10), Edie (Daring Reva 9/99-10/12), Dixie (Kiowa Secret Sue 11/01-1/13), Jessie (P's Real Time 11/98-3/13), token boy Graham (Zydeco Dancer 9/00-5/13), Cal (Back Already 12/99-11/13), Betsy (Back Kick Beth 11/98-12/13), Standard Poodles Minnie (1/99-1/14) + Perry (9/98-2/14), Annie (Do Marcia 9/03-10/14), Pink (Miss Pinky Baker 1/02-6/15), Poppy (Cmon Err Not 8/05-1/16), Kat (Jax Candy 5/05-5/17), Ivy (Jax Isis 10/07-7/21), Hildy (Braska Hildy 7/10-12/22), Opal (Jax Opal 7/08-4/23). GreyPoopon
It has now been almost 3 weeks since Cora's FCE, and almost 2 since my last post, so I thought I'd do one more update: The day of the last update (#78), I started taking Cora through the front of the house to start our walks, so she could practice on the stairs and slippery floors. The next night, Cora had her first walk with the rest of her usual group. She hasn't looked back. A couple of days later, she had her first post-walk, pre-breakfast play session: and chew: That night (or one around then) she joined us upstairs at bedtime. She was a bit unsettled at first, but gradually relaxed. That pattern continued for the next few nights, but she's OK now. She gradually improved at stairs and pooping, needing less and less support. This week, we stopped using the harness. I haven't put it away just yet, but so far she's been able to manage without it. On Friday, she was allowed freedom in the yard for the first time since she broke her femur in March (see Cora Sings " Born Free"). When she gets a bit more stable and I can be sure she won't get into trouble on the stairs or ramp, she'll be allowed to go out to the potty area on her own. By then she should also be well enough to have her freedom in the house when she's wearing her fashionable non-slip socks. She's not completely healed, but she's made a lot of progress, and she should make it all the way back. Thank you for your good wishes. They really help.
