Guest Maire
I need white light for me and my big boy Sam! (Big Samoan) Just had a fingertip size place on his chest aspirated- cells suspicious of mast- will have excision done Wed AM. I'm so scared for him. I just adopted him last April-love at first sight when I went on a haul to KC to pick up 6 - They all came from a blood donor facility in Texas. He had been there 3+ yrs after racing -very afraid of going to the Vet, and he's taken awhile to trust. Now this for him to go through! I'm soo scared, because I've had 5 dogs over the yrs and always been afraid the BIG C whould grab us sometime. I love him so- he's a big 90# gentle boy--6 yrs old. Cross your fingers & toes that it's benign please. I've been in a financial crunch and don't no how I'll pay if it is a stagemmast cell that needs chemo !! Hubcitypam
After they took Buck's tumor out they thought maybe it was a bee sting or something. Evidently they can look similar...something with histamines. Hope it is something as mundane for Sam I Am (do you ever call him that?). Xan
Keeping you, Sam and your finances in my thoughts! Hopefully it will turn out to be benign! It could still happen! If it isn't, you'll find a way to deal, even though it won't be easy. Talk to the vet about paying over time. Also, does his having been a blood donor get you anything? My dogs get free blood if needed, and I have even been able to trade credit for their donations against my (sigh!) ongoing bill. Best of luck to you both! Guest dmona
Maire, just brought my 11 year old Kelsey home this morning after her having surgery for a mast cell tumor on her tummy yesterday afternoon. It is a huge incision because they wanted to try to get all of it. She had one last June on her tail and we had her tail amputated. I, too, am afraid to hear the results of this one. The last one was a Grade 2. They also took a tiny one off her side and she had her dental. Poor baby....I have had her less than a year. She lost one eye to glaucoma several years ago..she is the sweetest ever. I do hope you get good results and I will be praying Sam doesn't have to have chemo or radiation. Please keep me posted. How are you going to keep him from messing with the incision? Guess we'll have to get creative with a tshirt on backwards or something. Dianne

Guest SusanP
Crossing all paws and fingers here. Zippy had a suspected mast cell tumor removed not too long ago. The vet gave her a shot of antihistimines before surgery just in case. I can't remember what the final diagnosis was, but they got the whole tumor out, and she's doing fine. Hoping Sam's turns out to be that simple.
Guest Maire
Its' pretty high on his chest and we don't think he can get to it-I've got a big T shirt & can put on him that will help, too. Guest RooCroo
Sending postive thoughts! I lost my Sissy to mast cell a few years ago. It was misdiagnosed as a basal cell tumor at first, and inadequate margins were taken during the first surgery. It recurred and spread to her lymph nodes before we could stop it. Be sure they take a huge margin around the tumor, even if the incision is huge. The good news is, mast cell cancer can be cured if caught early enough and if a large margin is taken around the tumor. I found out after we'd done chemo that mast cell does not respond that well to chemo. The latest recommended course is surgery followed by radiation. Get rid of this thing, sweetie, and don't mess with your stitches! Edited January 10, 2009 by RooCroo

Guest Maire
My Vet said she'll take wide margines- incision will be about 4' long-drew me a good pic. I'm feeling bad because I felt it about a week ago and it looked like a bug bite, scabby- then I forgot about it because i didn't see it. It's on his sternum almost between his front legs--I should have given him more hugs !! Thanks for the advice, I'll make sure she does as wide as poss ! ( Sam thanks you for the kisses & gives U one back ) Edited January 11, 2009 by Maire
