Maurice (01/87-01/04/99)

Fifteen years ago I adopted my first grey, Maurice. He was really my first dog. I grew up with dogs, but, he was the first that was totally my responsibility.

I had told a friend that I thought I wanted a greyhound. I had never even seen one in person. She called me one day and asked if I still wanted one as she had seen a pic of a fawn grey on the adoptables board at her vet's office. So, I went to see him. He was pitiful looking. He had large scars on his thigh, he was missing most of his tail....he really didn't wag his tail much when I talked to him...... . But, after hearing his story, I couldn't leave him there.

He was 7 yrs old at the time. I found out from the staff that he had raced (I never found out his race name), but, no one knew for how long. After his "retirement" from racing, he went to a vet's office (not the one who currently had him up for adoption) to live and be used as a blood donor. Once the current vet acquired him, they tried to find him a home. A woman "adopted" him, but, immediately brought him back after he peed on her couch. I came along shortly after.

I took him home that day. He quickly adjusted to "home" life....becoming a happy, loving guy!

I had 5 years with him before he got sick (cancer on his adrenal gland). Eventually his sickness became too much for him and I had to let him go. It was the hardest thing I have ever done. :cry1

I wanted to take a moment on the 10th year anniversary of our goodbye (sorry I'm a day late, MoMo) to remember him. To say thanks for being such a wonderful boy! Finally, to let him know that because of the love he put in my heart, two more greys have their forever home.....and this home will never, as long as I'm able, be without a grey again!!

I love you, Mo! Mama hasn't forgotten you. I hope you're running, pain-free, at the bridge. I'll see you there someday.

Stacy--your post made my eyes fill with tears. I knew you had mentioned once that Flower wasn't your first greyhound. MoMo sounds like he had a wonderful 5 yrs with you, and as you said, he paved the way for more greyhounds to find their way home to you! What a special boy he must have been.

I have quickly learned that the footprints our greys leave on our hearts are truly forever. I will never again have a home without one.

Stacy, that was such a sweet tribute to your boy. You came into his life just when he needed you most and he repaid you with love and happiness. He must have been special and how nice that he paved the way for more greys.
