Guest greydogluvr
I was holding out hope that Willie's limp was not osteo. His bone scan came back indicating that it was a high probability. So today we went for a surgery conslut. He was admitted for surgery tomorrw AM. We could have brought him home and re-admitted him at 5:00, but because of the distance from our home and his reluctance to ride in the car, we chose to admit him after the consult. So please keep him in you thought and send a as many positive thoughts as you can muster. He IS going to be fine. BTW he will have a pump in his shoulder to reduce swelling and fluid build up. Has anyone else here had experience with this? I am nervous because I will have to empty the reservior 2x per day. But I can do it if it makes him more comfortable. My stomach is in knots over this whole thing. sorry if there are spelling errors, my spell check is being wierd

mangos_mom
You and Willie will be in my thoughts as you go through this. The pump sounds interesting. Ultimately it was the fluid build-up that cause much of Mango's problem. It's hard to watch them go through this, but keep in mind that you are giving Willie a fighting chance against this lousy disease by doing this. I've had lots of second thoughts since making the decision for Mango, but I always come back to that thought, and now that she's recovering, I am contstantly reassured of that by the light in her eyes, and the way this has not kept her back from doing any of the things she loves. Guest greytkidsmom
Prayers for an uneventful surgery and recovery. The "pump" you describe sounds like a type of drain. A tube drains the fluid from the wound to a bulb-shaped reservoir. The bulb is usually silicone with a one-way release valve. It creates a gentle suction to help with the drainage. The vet office should show you what to do with it. It will be weird at first, but you will make a greyt nurse to Willie. Good luck.

Guest MorganKonaAlex
BTW he will have a pump in his shoulder to reduce swelling and fluid build up. Has anyone else here had experience with this? I am nervous because I will have to empty the reservior 2x per day. But I can do it if it makes him more comfortable. My stomach is in knots over this whole thing. I had 2 "pumps" when I had breast cancer surgery. One end of the drain tube is inside, the other end is attached to a soft bulb. It's the size and shape of a hand grenade. The bulb is flattened and plugged. It provides mild suction for the drain. You will have to unplug the bulb and empty it. In my case, I had to measure the amount of fluid. When the amount of fluid dropped to a certain level, they removed the drain. It's very easy to empty the drains. The most annoying part was dealing with these hanging appendages. Hopefully, they will have them secured somehow.
