Can We Have Some Prayers And Positive Thoughts Please?

Diablo broke his tail today and the vet has recommended the bottom 3 inches be amputated because of the severe risk of infection if simply taped and left to heal on its own. Diablo’s scheduled for surgery tomorrow morning and I’m a nervous wreck! :( General anesthesia is never a good thing especially for greyhounds (as many of you know) so any prayers and positive thoughts you can spare will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much! Tamara

I might want to question this. Was his tail bleeding or the skin broken? Paul broke his tail cleanly. I saw the x-ray. It swelled like there was a golf ball in the middle of his tail, but my vet said to let it heal by itself and it did. It is hard to tell from your description what it is like.

If you do decide to go ahead with the surgery, of course, I wish you and him well.

Try not to worry. Anesthesia isn't some great boogey man to be afraid of. Your vet knows what to do and all will be fine. Diablo will look adorable with his bobbed tail. If his teeth are nasty and you have the funds available, inquire about having his teeth cleaned at the same time.

My Louis requires sedation and/or anesthesia for the most mundane procedures.... when he was having a particularly accident prone spell a couple of years ago, I joked about buying him his own vials of Rompun/Yohimbine and bottle of Isofluorane. He's been under more times than I can think of and the worst worry is that there's a clear path outside when we reverse the Rompun... he always has to take a huge dump when he gets his feet under him, even if he did his business right before.

Unfortunately, yes, there was copious amounts of blood and the bone was actually sticking out from the skin. The bad thing is we're not even sure how he did it.....he came in from the backyard like that. My husband and I looked all around to see if we could find evidence of blood where the injury occured but we can't find anything. The doc said he could have just been wagging his tail frantically (like he always does) and smacked it on something just right and the break occured.

I'm sorry. I thought he just broke it, which is what Paulie did. We also don't know how he did it; it just swelled up like a snake that ate a mouse. I saw the x-ray and the break was clean. We didn't tape the tail or anything. On the other hand, John E broke his tail, like you are saying and we removed one vertibrae to be able to stitch it. Good luck tomorrow. We will be thinking you and Diablo tomorrow.

Lots of prayers coming from here and please do keep us posted. Wayne has only a 4" tail and he's still handsome  It's the healing process that can be a pain in the neck, but he'll do great. He has you!!
