Zola Hurt Her Leg

Recommended Posts

We took Zola to the beach last night, first time in about a week, and she was all goofy and spazzy and went all out running. Mid-run she let out a cry (not like the drama queen GSOD but a painful cry), but she still ran, though more slowly, to me. We finished out our walk because she didn't seem to be doing too badly--a slight limp but happy tail. Wehn we got home, she could barely make it up the stairs into our house. I gave her a bath and she had no post-bath zoomies and started chattering as if really cold, even though she usually doesn't notice the cold. I wrapped her in a blankie and gave her 50mg of rimadyl, in case the pain was a lot. She slept thru the night. This morning, she seems lethargic, doesn't want to put weight on her leg (though there's nothing obvious as to what she did to it).

Should I give her another dose of rimadyl and if so, how much?

Just please be careful with Rimadyl. If she's had current bloodwork done and you know her kidneys and liver values are okay, I guess it's safe. Mine take 75mg twice a day. Sure hope she feels better

If she's not putting weight on it, I'd see the vet and get an x-ray.

Yes, just had annual physical done last week and I always get a full blood panel done for baseline values (yeah, the vets think I'm crazy but...). So I'm not worried about kidney or liver function, just trying to walk the line of addressing her pain versus giving her unnecessary meds with questionable side effects.

I examined her leg and didn't feel any swelling or breaks (I wouldn't feel microfractures but even if she had them, we wouldn't be able to do much). My sister, human doctor, also examined her and didn't find anything. If she's still ginger about it tomorrow, I'll take her in for an x-ray. Just wondering if I should be doing anything else.

Thank you all for the support. I just called home and apparently Zola is staying in bed for the day, but is roaching. Did I mention how much I love my dog?

Sending scritches and hugs along with healing thoughts. I would contact your vet and see what his/her thoughts were - we have a friend who has a bernese mtn dog who ripped something in her leg - cruceary ligament (I know I demolished the spelling on that) I think - and they have to do surgery to repair it - and it's only 50/50 to work any better - she also did this while running on the beach. Good luck with whatever you do.

Thanks for all the thoughts. She slept thru the first night and stayed off her leg all of Sat. Yesterday she was walking around mostly fine, so I think she'll probably be ok. This morning she jumped on me. I swear I care more about her pain than she does.
