I just wanted to take moment and introduce myself. I've been surfing the boards for a few weeks now. We are relatively new Greyhound owners. In early Feb we brought home Raelen (once ICU Biker). She fit into my pack with absolutely no issues. I love the fact the kennel I went to let me bring my other dogs in and let them choose each other. I have 2 eight year old shepherd mixes, Raelen is 4.5. The only issue we've had has been with her teeth and when we brought her home she had to have 21 removed. Yikes! We weren't expecting the big expense but her personality has more than made up for the cost. Watching this sweet shy dog's personality unfold has been amazing. She was a bit unsure when we first brought her home but after having all those nasty teeth removed, her own backyard to run around in, and her very own couch she now wakes us with running spread eagle jumps on top of you, and her favorite time is cuddle time on the couch.

I'm in Newark DE btw.

So without futher ado a few pics of our newest angel.

Raelen is very pretty. ICU dogs are typically fun to have around, too.

I couldn't help myself. I had to check Greyhound-Data.com to find out how hold your Raelen is. She won't be 5 until October, What was the problem with her teeth that she lost so many? Poor baby girl.

Welcome to Greytalk! :)

She's just lovely! I bet she feels so much better finally having those nasty teeth gone, poor girlie.

The "smoochy" pic of your other two pups is pretty darned adorable too!

When we took her to my first vet they immediately knew that she needed to have some teeth removed. So I scheduled the professional cleaning. Unfortunately her mouth was much worse than they were expecting. And on top of that they nearly lost her on the table due to the anesthesia. My vet removed 6 teeth and then referred me to a dental specialist because they did not want to put her under anesthesia again and she needed more removed. I was a basketcase at this point, lol...

So we ended up taking her to a specialist in the area. He diagnosed her with CUPS (Chronic Ulceratative Periodontal Stomatits). Basically it's an auto-immune diease where she has an allergic reaction to the plaque on her teeth. It causes painful ulcers on her lips and gums. It's more common in cats, it was called Trench mouth in WWI vets. He was actually amazed she hadn't been put down for it. She went on a string of anitbiotics to try and tackle as much of the infection as we could and then he used nerve blocks in her jaw and only the lightest general anesthesia. After the radiographs and once he got in there he ended up removing a lot more than we were expecting. He even took a biopsy because the roof of her mouth was inflammed and he was concerned it might point towards other issues. But the biopsy was clean. I know that the infection was impacting her system because one of her sutures from her spaying surgery wan't disolving corectly. The specialist actually went in (without charging us) and removed the suture that didn't disolve to help her heal there as well.

She gets daily brushing now and lots of things to chew on... And you can tell she's much happier. So it was a rocky beginning but we've hopefully pulled through the worst of it. Although the specialist did let us know that she might have to have more removed as she ages. So we are trying to limit that as much as we can... She hasn't missed a meal yet... She's been very stoic about it all, much more than I have been!

Welcome! :welcome2 You have a beautiful family. So sorry Raelen had a rough start but she must feel so much better now. I had a cat with stomatitis - a low dose of interferon helped him but I think there are some unpleasant side effects in dogs. I'm sure her new home will make all the difference in her health. She's very beautiful.

Dogs have 42 teeth.

And you are right Jackson does look a bit like my Aleister!

The gold couch is her favorite spot. She loves messing up all the blankets on it. And the Elephant has always been a favorite of everyone! Raelen was no exception.

Kathy,

Would love to get a playdate together, I just need to figure out where/when? I may just bring Raelen more due to transportation ease than anything else, lol... Just let me know.

She's a beauty! Where did you get the elephant? My girl would love that.

I got the elephant at one of my local pet stores. Concord Pets. May be up in your area too... I've only seen them once and it wasn't the cheapest but I had to get it for Aleister. His favorite toy was an elephant for a very looong time.

He loves to flip the trunk up on this one and rub his face on it... At the time they had a bear, leopard and gorilla as well. But it's been years.

I did a quick search on the web and found this: http://pet-king.stores.yahoo.net/dog-beds-plush.html

Looks like the same company because all the same choices are there. It's also cheaper than when I bought it!
