Experience With Infectious Bone Cysts Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Good news.... It's NOT cancer

... it is infectious/inflamatory. Culture revealed a common bacteria that can be treated with a wide spectrum of antibiotics.

Bad news... if that doesn't work then treatment is the same as bone cancer... amputation.. Finn is NOT a candidate for amputation as he has a very compromised right leg.

Dr Couto is still on the case and consulting with my vet for the best treatment options.

:hope that the antibitics work :luck

Has anyone had a dog with a bone infection that was treated surgically? (We are talking removing the effected area of bone and implanting bone from hip.)

Specifically I would like to know

1 How painful was the proceedure?

2 Recovery time?

3 Was it successful?

.....and most importantly, in hindsight, would you do it again if you had to?

I've not had to go to that extent w/ one of my own dogs or one of my patients... if it got to that point I'd likely refer to OSU to make sure that was the best option.

Yes, I've had a couple of dogs that needed surgical debridement, but not full-thickness pieces of bone removed. That's way more involved than what we've done here. Agreed with getting a second opinion. Best of luck!

Is there anybody in the Boston area that does that procedure?

See if your vet can find somebody for you and give them a call.

I don't know of anybody that's done anything like that, so I can't offer you my opinions :(

No advice... just thoughts and prayers

Had Kingsley needed to have had bone removed from above his eye in Feb, Karen Pastor at the Mass Vet Referral Hosp in Woburn would have been who would have done it. We think very highly of her and her bedside manner and talent at her surgical techniques.

Amy and Tim in Beverly, MA, with Chase and Always missing Kingsley (Drama King) and Ruby (KB's Bee Bopper).

Just sending good thoughts. No experience here.

Actually, Tim had a bout with osteomeylitis last year. He didn't need srugery as the inflammation/infection went away after courses of antibiotic. His bone specialist was Dr. Spence Reid of Hershey PA

Good thoughts your way......is this for one of your hounds?

I have met with Dr Pastor in the past with Finn. She is very sweet and a good friend of my vet.

I have seen significant growth since 4/22 Finn has an appt on Monday. We will see what the doctor says and go from there. :(

No experience with this but Dr. Melissa Dudley at VCA Northboro shouldn't be too far from you. She is a board certified orthpedic surgeon and has lots and lots of grey experience. She is excellent, should you need a surgeon. She operated on my guy Stretch's broken leg and you'd never know he even had an injury. Hugs to you and Finn :grouphug

So glad it's not cancer. Will continue to send good thoughts and prayers for a full recovery. Those treats should help him feel better!
