MAY I GO

Do you think the time is right?

May I say goodbye to pain filled days and endless lonely nights.

I've lived my life and done my best, an example I tried to be.

So let me take that step beyond, and set my spirit free....

I didn't want to go at first, I fought with all my might.

But something seems to draw me now to a warm and living light.

I want to go, I really do: it's difficult to stay.

But I will try as best I can to live just one more day.

To give you time to care for me and share love and fears.

I know you're sad and afraid, because I can see your tears.

I'll not be far, I promise that, and hope you'll always know,

That my spirit will be close to you wherever you may go.

Thank you so much for loving me. You know I love you too.

And that's why it's hard to say goodbye and end this life with you

So hold me now just one more time, and let me hear you say,

Because you care so much for me you'll let me go today.

A friend sent me this short, simple poem when I lost Chico. It touched me deeply.

In one of the stars I shall be living.

In one of them I shall be playing.

And so it will be as if all the stars were playing

when you look at the sky at night.

And when your sorrow is comforted

you will be content that you have known me.

You will always be my friend,

and I yours.

Our heart is aching for your friend and her beloved companion.

Dog On Loan

I'll lend you for a little time, a dog of mine God said.

For you to love while she lives and mourn when she is dead.

The years they may be six or ten or even as few as three.

But will you, 'til I call her back, take care of her for me?

She'll bring her charms to gladden you, and shall her stay be brief,

You'll have her lovely memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise she will stay, since all from Earth return,

But there are lessons taught down there I want this dog to learn.

I've looked the wide world over, in my search for masters true,

And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes, I have selected you.

Now will you give her your love, nor think the labor vain,

Nor hate me when I come to call to take her back again?

We answered in sincerity, Dear Lord, Thy will be done.

For all the joy this dog shall bring, the risk of grief we'll run.

We'll shelter her with tenderness, and love her while we may,

And for the happiness we will know, we'll ever grateful stay.

But shall the angels call for her much sooner than we planned,

We'll know the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.

When Flash died last March, I kept coming across a lot of the sappy, "feel good" sayings out there. The one thing I found that really said everything I felt was this one and I had it printed on nice paper and framed. Our adoption group now uses it for the header of our Tributes page.

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own, live within a fragile circle, easily and often breached. Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way. We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully understanding the necessary plan." ~Irving Townsend

this is one that always got to me. i do not know the author.

I AM WITH YOU

I stood by your bed last night, I came to have a peep.

I could see that you were crying, You found it hard to sleep.

I whined to you softly as you brushed away a tear,

"It's me, I haven't left you, I'm well, I'm fine, I'm here."

I was close to you at breakfast, I watched you pour the tea,

You were thinking of the many times, your hands reached down to me.

I was with you at the shops today, Your arms were getting sore.

I longed to take your parcels, I wish I could do more.

I was with you at my grave today, You tend it with such care.

I want to reassure you, that I'm not lying there.

I walked with you towards the house, as you fumbled for your key.

I gently put my paw on you, I smiled and said "it's me."

You looked so very tired, and sank into a chair.

I tried so hard to let you know, that I was standing there.

It's possible for me, to be so near you everyday.

To say to you with certainty, "I never went away."

You sat there very quietly, then smiled, I think you knew ...

in the stillness of that evening, I was very close to you.

The day is over... I smile and watch you yawning and say

"goodnight, God bless, I'll see you in the morning."

And when the time is right for you to cross the brief divide,

I'll rush across to greet you and we'll stand, side by side.

I have so many things to show you, there is so much for you to see.

Be patient, live your journey out ... then come home to be with me.

These are really good. Thank you everyone.

Here's one that was sent to me:

Mindful of you the sodden earth in spring,

And all the flowers that in the springtime grow,

And dusty roads, and thistles, and the slow

Rising of the round moon, all throats that sing

The summer through, and each departing wing,

And all the nests that the bared branches show,

And all winds that in any weather blow,

And all the storms that the four seasons bring.

You go no more on your exultant feet

Up paths that only mist and morning knew,

Or watch the wind, or listen to the beat

Of a bird's wings too high in air to view,--

But you were something more than young and sweet

And fair,--and the long year remembers you.

Cara Brockhoff has this on her website and it is my all time favorite. I have it printed and framed next to Harley and Rex's ashes. Swear I get choked up every time I read it.

In Tribute

With dignity and gentleness of heart,

my uncommon friend

completed his mission as he saw it.

He came in love, he left in love,

slipping out so softly one could but imagine

a gentle breeze, nothing more.

Behind he leaves a mighty wind,

an expression of unconditional love,

a power to heal the planet earth.

For this beloved friend WAS love.

Total,

joyous,

unconditional love.

Through his eyes one sensed

Truth,

wisdom,

compassion.

Only a dog?

The most treasured of values,

the most tender of passions, my Perro.

May he run forever

on the beaches and trails

of the kingdom beyond.

Woo-ah woo-ooo-ooo!

He greets the morning,

head held high, eyes sparkling,

calling the troops to a day of adventure.

Fleet beauty,

a dance of joy,

sharing time with so many stories to tell.

And then to close the day,

a quiet lift of his head,

from his favorite resting spot at bedside.

With dignity and gentleness of heart,

my uncommon friend said good night.

Good night, my Perro, God bless you.
