  1. Between the Thundershirt, the melatonin and the Resue Remedy (all used together) my IG will actually lay quietly in a chair during a storm or fireworks instead of pace and pant and try to get in/under/behind the furniture. It's a miracle for us!!
  2. Yes, although not quite as acutely as you're seeing. I have no diagnosis for you, my vet calls it IBD for lack of a better term but we all know it is not that. She gets gurgly tummy, may vomit and it may have small bright red clots in it but no fleshy appearing bits. She will have normal consistency stool throughout, but the next day will be coated with cranberry coloured mucus. This last 12-24 hours and is gone as quickly as it comes for a month or two. She's on limited antigen diet (poultry only with occasional lamb) and diet restriction has made no differenc. Her weight never fluxuates, her lab values never fluxuate. She had upper GI endoscopy with biopsies during a dental once and her stomach and upper small intestine looked good and all the biopsies showed was Plasmolymphocytic gastritis. She has horrible, vile smelling gas the next day so now I automatically give her 3cc of catnip tea, 5cc of chamomile tea, 1/4 pepcid (she's an IG too) and a phazyme gel. I have Carafate on hand for if the bleeding gets worse than usual.
  3. I've got mine on Blue Buffalo Freedom grain-free chicken and all but Nadir are doing very well on it. No gas and decent stools. Nadir never had gas from it, but his stools were soft, but then again he was having issues to start with when I switched them over. Mousie, the IG, has softer stool then the Whippet but I attribute that to the canned food. Since it has more moisture it creates more moisture in the poo, same as in a person. It's not bad poo by far, it's formed, relatively easy to pick up although it can tend to squish, but it is softer as the whippie gets only a tiny amount of canned and mostly kibble.
  4. I have the only little family that does well on it apparently! I feed both the 12 yr old IG and the 9 yr old Whippet Blue Freedom Chicken or Duck Wilderness and neither have gas and both have good, small poo. The IG gets canned too to smuggle her heart pills down in.
  5. Cat platelets are Terrible for clumping! The outside lab should be doing a manual count on every slide anyway, we always did. Every. Single. Slide. And there should be a canned note if there was noted clumping or anything else odd.
  6. I like Blue Buffalo. Both the Wilderness and the Freedom. they also have a limited antigen line called Basics.
  7. I mix about a tablespoon of canned in the Whippet's kibble and the IG gets mostly canned with a little kibble. Nobody feels left out that way. Just cut way back on her amount of treat and mix it in her kibble
  8. Devastating but what an inspiring story of osteo survival Sweet Charlie is. We'll miss him probably only a little less then you and your family.
  9. I had it done for my Dane when she was spayed. Not that much longer of an incision for a girl and she was under anyway. I did it just because that breed can be very prone to it and because her sire bloated and died while the breeder was at work for the day. Fine when he left, gone when he got home. So little is really understood about bloat....
  10. Grateful to see this thread as I have a similar issue with my 9 year old whippet foster. I think she has anxiety but we're in the process of a vet workup just the same. She does great if I'm here although she never asks to go out, it's while I'm at work that she'll pee anywhere from two to four times on the carpet and ALWAYS in a different spot. I left pads in the tiled kitchen, showed them to her, watched her sniff them, she didn't use them. u/a done Saturday was surprisingly negative and appointment with the vet will be Thursday/Friday or Saturday (have to call tomorrow). Started 1mg of Melatonin every morning on Saturday after the call came about the negative u/a.
  11. I always did 48 in my crock for chicken leg quarters. Add in veggies and carb around the last couple hours so they don't get over cooked.
  12. I've done that before. Works well except she sorts out the chicken and it's hard to mix the crushed pills in. I do that when she's being particularly stubborn though and don't want her to get empty stomach sick. I keep some small chunks of baked chicken in the freezer. I can nuke them for 30-45 seconds and finely chop it and mix it in the canned to entice her.
  13. She's on limited antigen. Poultry only, single or no grain. I buy a variety of Blue Buffalo Wilderness and their limited antigen, Wellness limited antigen, Castor and Pollux and Natural Balance. Her kibble is BB Wilderness Duck. She gets about 1/4 cup per day (Iggy) mixed in the canned. I've never looked at the Chicken Soup, I'll have to find a label and read it, it could be an option.
  14. My only goals are feeding them something healthy and hopefully cheaper then canned foods. They both get kibble, the Whippet eats it readily, Mousie not so much. Mousie has canned mixed in every meal, especially the two meals she gets her pills in. I had some Honest Kitchen samples but found that to be incredibly expensive, very close to the $10/pound like Susan mentioned about Birkdale's complete meal mix. I used to use the home cooked that I mentioned in the home cooked thread but I have no where to keep the crock pot safe from the cat for 48 hours.
  15. I have, it was a recipe I found on here way back when. It went something like take chicken leg quarters and cook them in the crock pot for 48 hours. For about the last hour or two of that time add your carb (rice/potato/oatmeal) and your veggies/fruits. Cooking that many hours in the crock virtually cremates the bone so it's safe to feed because it just dissolves when you stir the finished food before you freeze it. Mousie loved it but I stopped because the cat kept trying to get at the hot crock pot and I was afraid he was going to burn himself or pull the whole thing over.
  16. So I did my maths, and I bought 333 oz of canned food yesterday which I think equals 20 pounds for $55.40 minus tax. With my dog and the "foster" whippet I'm using a 13oz can pretty much daily. The Petmix that I'm looking at as a trial is 2lb mix that you add 5lb of meat to. The mix is $16.95 for the 2 lb and I priced ground turkey yesterday at about $15 for 5lb. So that came to $38.80 for 16lb including the tax and shipping from the mix website and the turkey with tax. I'm thinking it will come out a tad cheaper. The parent name of the company is Birkdale Medicinals and they developed all of their foods and treats to support pets with cancer and hopefully help prevent it. I found more reviews under Birkdale than Healthy Dogma. Still hoping maybe one of you has tried it
  17. Gosh I hate to do this and so late at night,(near midnight here, so it's too late for you to talk to them), but you need to be aware of all the possibilities no matter how horrible.... Are they sure he didn't break his neck, in which case he could now have....injured his spinal cord causing the (permanent) paralysis? I sure hope it's just more swelling pressing on the cord, that will go down with the steroids. And you know the swelling from an injury is worse on the second and third day...
  18. And they don't say how much that one makes either! The PetMix is $16.95 for 2 pounds, adding 5 pounds of meat makes 16 pounds of dog food reconstituted. That's the one I'm thinking of. I priced five pounds of ground turkey today and it priced out at around $15. So tomorrow I have to do the math and see if 16 pounds of "canned" food at $32 is cheaper then all of those cans I bought at the pet store today (Mousie has to have her meds crushed in canned food).
  19. Has anyone used this dog food premix? I recently became aware of it and it sounds ok to me, but I can't find any independent reviews, just the ones on their site which of course are going to be favorable! Any experiences or thoughts?
  20. the Dane had dew pads. I'm not sure if the IG does, I can't remember. The whippet has no dew claws.
  21. Oh. My. God. So speechless and so gutted... there are no words. Only kleenex. Lots of Kleenex... :( :(
  22. I'm currently using PetzLife gel brushing once a week and just painting a little on with my finger a few other times a week and so far so good (since December). Oxyfresh gel once a week was ok but putting the liquid in the water started making her sick after about six months so I can't use that any more. CET was out of the question.
  23. Obviously he thinks he's cured and he's done with this junk! Tell him a positive attitude is a great portion of the battle!
  24. Films for sure IMHO. You don't necessarily have to jump to another vet or even a specialist until the films are read. Depending on what shows up, then decide about a specialist or another vet.
