  1. The bedtime thing is due to our other greyhound Streak having the empty stomach vomiting. Since it is difficult to feed one without the other knowing it we just reduced their afternoon meal by 1/3 and started giving it to them at night. Streak has not had an incident since. I would love to be able to just leave the food down during the day but Streak would be in there in no time chowing down that food too. I am going to try to cut back on the amount of food and see if that makes a difference and keep an eye on her weight. Later feeding time may help as well...I will try that.
  2. Jonelle turned 10 in July and has always been anxious to eat her meals. A few months ago she seemed bored with her usual food...not eating unless something yummy was in the bowl. I finally found a food she liked and could tolerate. She is eating Taste of the Wild buffalo and venison. This food is much higher in protein than her old food which was Purina EN only available through the vet. The EN is easy on the digestive system and she always did well on it. I had tried her on some high quality foods a few years back and she had runny stools, gas etc. She just could not tolerate the richness of those foods. So now, in the morning, she often (but not always) sniffs her bowl and walks away. The afternoon meal to date has never been an issue, nor is her 1/2 cup around 10:30 p.m. I know many on this board have picky eaters. Luckily in almost 20 years I have never had a grey that didn't run for the bowl at mealtime and gobble up their food. If they didn't something was wrong and we were at the vet the same day. Jonelle is a small greyhound....about 50 pounds. I am wondering if the new food is just more filling due to the high protein and she is just not as hungry? She ate a total of 3 cups of the old food per day which is the same amount of the new food I am giving her. She does not act like she feels bad and I can usually sense when anything is amiss. I will say that her stools are normal but much more in volume on this new food. Any thoughts or experiences are appreciated!
  3. I'm so sorry. What a wonderful story to read. I had a girl with a very similar personality...bossy and barky...and the best friend in the world. I know how much you are missing her right now. I'll bet very soon you will receive a sign from her. Sending prayers for your hearts to heal.
  4. How sweet she is. . I am so sorry. She is indeed a beautiful girl and I know you are missing her right now. Sending prayers for your heart to heal.
  5. We are back. Xrays reveal no bone problems. May have a cyst starting or could be soft tissue injury. Deramaxx and cold compresses will likely resolve it in a few days. Fine needle aspirate would likely yield nothing per vet. Thanks to both posters who replied. I was quite calm by the time we arrived.
  6. Jonelle has an appt with the vet at 2:30 today. We found a lump on her left front leg that feels like it is fluid filled as opposed to a hard lump. It is below her elbow and above her wrist. Almost exactly halfway. It just came up this weekend. Any ideas? I am worried about the worst and and about ready to start breathing into a paper bag. She flies through the yard after squirrels and may have injured it that way. It is not painful and she is not limping. The only other thing I can think of is that she may have grazed the handle of the roller cover for the pool. It sticks out a bit and if positioned just right it lines up with the lump. She may have hit the handle as she was flying by.
  7. First of all, let me say I have never had a greyhound with SA so I certainly sympathize with all who have dealt with/ are dealing with it. The only thing I can offer is our experience with our very first greyhound Jimmy. He did not like being in his crate especially if we were not home. We did try confining him to one room and he hated that as well. However, after we gave him free roaming of the house he was fine and never bothered anything. Have you tried leaving the entire dwelling to her with the crate door open? That's my only pathetic suggestion with my limited experience. However, if you feel she is not a good fit for you, don't beat yourself up. You have done everything anyone can be expected to do. I am sure the stress of this situation is just as hard on you too.
  8. I am so sorry to read this. Sending prayers for your hearts to heal. She was a special girl.
  9. I can't believe what I am reading. I am so very sorry. I was just thinking about him the other day. I understand your anger. I have been there too, and I know how unfair it seems. Sending prayers for your hearts to heal. Run free handsome boy.
  10. The late Miss Magic was on a heavy course of antibiotics when she had kidney disease. She developed a raging UTI. She kept wanting to go outside because she thought she had to go. Nothing was there. She did that all night long one night---about every 20 minutes. I think yogurt is best used when starting the antibiotic. I don't know how much benefit would be had by starting after symptoms develop. I would get a sample to the vet, however, they may want to get a clean sample by going into the bladder---I forget the name of the procedure. Sure sounds like she might have a UTI. Good luck and keep us posted.
  11. I'm so sorry to read about Butter and the loss of your dear family members at the same time. You and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers as your hearts attempt to heal.
  12. Jonelle often does things like this when she is out doing her "circus stunts" in the yard. When I see her favoring a leg, I usually lay off the walks for a day or two as I have noticed that tends to aggravate it. My vet gave me an anti-inflammatory to keep on hand (Deramaxx) and Tramadol for pain. I use these as needed. She is a master squirrel hunter/chaser/killer and frequently overdoes it flying around the yard. I have given buffered aspirin before. The problem is it doesn't stay in their system very long so it won't buy much relief. I would see how things are in the a.m. If there is any yelping I would get to the vet for some meds. Either way, I would skip the walk for at least tomorrow. Hope this helps.
  13. Yes to your question about Tramadol. The late Miss Jackie had her dosage increased when she developed lymphoma and the first night she paced all night long. The vet added 5mg valium and that helped her to settle. Hope your girl feels more like herself soon.
  14. I'm so sorry to read this. I know you are missing him right now. Sending prayers for your heart to heal.
  15. Thanks all! The lump was removed Wednesday and we are awaiting results of the biopsy which should arrive early next week. Jonelle has to wear an E-Collar when I am not able to watch her. She is NOT happy about that. Thanks for your good thoughts. I will update again when I know her test results.
  16. I took Jonelle to the vet last Friday due to a skin lump/bump/lesion I found on the base of her tail. It is on top of the skin, not within the skin. The vet did a fine needle aspiration and said he saw some round cells and wanted to send it off to the lab for further evaluation. He called this a.m. to say there is no infection, and no definitive diagnosis, but that hemangiosarcoma is something that might be a possibility based on what the lab had to say. So, I am taking her in tomorrow morning to have it removed and we are going ahead and doing her dental even though she is a couple of months away from needing that. I am trying not to worry at this point as we don't know what, if anything, we are dealing with. However, I decided to check her entire body over again to see if there are any other lumps I missed. I didn't find any. I decided to look at the lump on the base of her tail again and the lump has gone down in size by at least 50%---but likely more than that. Do you think that means anything? I'm hoping that is a good sign that it's not some type of cancer, but perhaps that's just wishful thinking on my part. Any experience with something like this would be appreciated. 08/13/2012 The biopsy results are in. She had a circumanal gland adenoma. Benign! She is healing nicely and is already back to throwing fits and performing her circus stunts. Thanks all for asking about her! I'm so relieved. Now I can stop looking at pictures of hemangiosarcomas and trying to figure out if that's what she has.
  17. I'm so sorry. I enjoyed reading about her and her antics. It was a long time before I realized she wasn't a pup! I know you are missing her right now. Sending prayers for your hearts to heal.
  18. I'm so sorry. . Thank you for telling us about her. She sounds like such a sweet soul. I know you are missing her right now. Sending prayers for your heart to heal.
  19. I think I know what you are describing. It's a bit like a crinkle sound under the skin? The late Miss Magic and Jimmy got into a minor altercation years ago and he nipped her on the head. The vet gave us some topical cream to put on it. It was very minor. Maybe she grazed her head on something sharp?
