  1. I never even thought about the L-theanine. Miriam was the poster spook child when we first fostered her 5 or so years ago. She was on L-theanine, melatonin, benadryl, and prescription meds at various times. The sutures will be out in less than 1 1/2 weeks and fortunately or unfortunately I do not have a job so I am home with her all the time and I will sit with her in the living room when she starts to stress out and take the muzzle off.
  2. Unfortunately Miriam's brain is always on over drive. She has defeated the collar and t-shirts in the past.
  3. Saturday was the GPA-WI Greyhound Gala in Madison, WI. Miriam was supposed to be there but she wasn't. Thursday she had an internal medicine consult and a fine needle aspirate of her liver. There were no cancer cells present. Because her ALT was still in the 300s, she went in for a biopsy on Friday. It was supposed to be a laproscopic biopsy but it didn't end up that way. They nicked her spleen. Once they stopped the bleeding, she had a full surgical biopsy. We picked her up after the Gala on Saturday. Miriam does not take surgery well. She totally flips out wearing any type of lamp shade so she has to wear a muzzle. She still gets frantic with a muzzle on, but not as bad as the lamp shade. They had a Fentanyl patch on her but she had such a bad reaction to that we took her back to the vet school on Sunday. They removed the patch and prescribed Tramadol. She still was not eating on Monday, so we discontinued the Tramadol. She is only on Gabapentin and she is doing much better on that. Her sutures will be removed on the 28th. In addition to the liver biopsy, they are doing a liver copper analysis and bile culture. We probably will not have all the results till sometime next week. Once the results are all in, I will post an update.
  4. I understand vet bills. Miriam cost us over $3000.00 just last week and we still do not know what is ailing her. Don't even want to think about Pogo's bills.
  5. Wheat - 4 - hit by car Icabod - 11 - hemangiosarcoma Scarlett - 12.5 - was diagnosed with a spindle cell tumor but died from electrocution Rhett - 14 - old age, suffered from lumbosacaral stenosis Dixie - 12 - laryngeal paralysis Pogo - 8 - bone cancer
  6. I have been in contact with Dr. Couto regarding Miriam's liver values. Her ALT value has gone down but there are other numbers that he is concerned about. He suggests that she have a liver biopsy. I am guessing someone on the forum has gone through this with their pup. The main question is whether to do it with a laparoscope or surgically. How do you choose the method? Thanks.
  7. We had Pogo put down on July 7th. Yesterday would have been his 2nd "Gotcha Day".
  8. Are you on Facebook? After we put Pogo to sleep I posted what meds I had left over on the Bone Cancer Dogs, Osteosarcoma in Dogs, and Canine Osteosarcoma. I gave away most of them that way. What I could not give to other pups going through cancer, I gave to our local shelter.
  9. So sorry for your loss. Sending hugs. Lizzy will always be just a memory away.
  10. eccentriborbits I am so sorry for your loss. While we have never lost a greyhound in a hospital without one of us being there, we did lose our first kitty son at an emergency vet hospital without us around. We know how you feel. Not long after our greyhound, Pogo, was diagnosed with osteo, our friend's greyhound was also diagnosed with this dreadful disease. Wrigley underwent having her leg amputated and came home. She developed complications at home - lack of appetite, upset stomach, more than normal pain. It turned out that she had developed bleeding ulcers. She went back to the vet school where she died. They did a necropsy on her and did find that the cancer had spread to areas other than the lungs (where it usually spreads to). I think Wrigley survived 3 weeks post amputation. You were doing what you thought was best for Miles. We all do what we think is best for our pets, but we never truly know if what we are doing is best. Only if they could talk. Pogo made it 7 1/2 months post amputation. We wanted to have him put to sleep at home, but that was not in the cards. After more mets were found on his lungs, we tried a different chemo (we were on Palladia at the time of the increase in mets). He developed severe complications which included a fluid build up in his chest. He was scheduled for a check up at our local vet 1 week after finding out the increased lung mets at the vet school. Pogo was having trouble breathing and developed a cough. Xrays were done and even I could see several more small tumors in just a week's time and his chest was filled with fluid. Roy was out of town when this happened and we talked about waiting form him to come home the next day but the thought of him suffering even more by the time he got home was too much. It was just Miriam and I there when he passed. Roy felt terrible that he couldn't be there for Pogo. Sending hugs.
  11. Is there differences in Milk Thistle supplements? The S Adenosyl 225 I am giving to Miriam has 40 mg of Milk Thistle per tablet.
  12. Is Denamarin the same as S Adenosyl 225?
  13. In addition to the milk thistle already in the SAM-e? If so, how much did you give your terrier (and do you know how much more can be given to a greyhound)?
  14. The ultrasound did not show any obvious tumors. On Friday the local vet checked the bile acids. Her bile acids fasting was 23 and 2 hours post food they were 27. Her teeth look fairly cruddy so we will take her in and have them cleaned in case there is an infection there causing her liver values to be so wonky. We will have her on S Adenosyl 225 twice a day and have bloodwork done in a month. I will be sending the ultrasound pictures along with the results of her lab work to Dr. Couto for his opinion.
  15. Miriam will be getting an ultrasound on Saturday.
  16. I know the normal ALT value is probably somewhere here, but I don't have the ambition to hunt it down. In March, Miriam's ALT was 215. In May it was 178. Saturday it was 528. Roy will be taking her back to the vet on Friday. What tests should they do? Hopefully Saturday or Sunday she will be getting an ultrasound. I am not ready for this. Pogo hasn't been gone a full two months yet.
  17. So sorry about Macy. Hopefully Greg will adjust well. Miriam was very close to Dixie when we lost her 3 years ago and now she lost her brother. She not doing too bad. Miriam was a pretty bad spook when she came to us, so it isn't surprising she reacting in the way she is. She seems to channel Pogo occasionally in the way that she runs. Miriam has never been a runner, but occasionally she will do an abbreviated version of Pogo's running style. You will be in our thoughts. Sending hugs.
  18. So sorry. Our goofy Pogo (who was also a lab in a greyhound suit, along with some saint bernard for the drool factor) will be there to meet Zuri and they can play together and not be in pain.
  19. Doing okay. Finally have at least a temp job which started on the 23rd. So far Miriam is doing okay home alone without a brother for company during the day. Miriam is trying to scare us. Miriam does not run. She is the picture of lazy. On Sunday, the 21st she decided to "channel" her brother and run, and I swear she ran just like him. Of course she starts limping a lot on a non-corn infested foot soon as she is done running. I started the job on the Tuesday after she does this. Called Monday morning and they were booked solid (unfortunately a couple severe emergencies came in). Since we live in the middle of nowhere, the vets office is not open every Saturday, so the 27th was out. Miriam is due for her shots and physical, and other diagnostics (she had slightly elevated liver values a few months ago when she had a vulvaplasty and they want to check the values again). We still had 8 days worth of Rimadyl from Pogo and from Miriam's surgery. Asked if it was okay to try until we get into see them. Her last rimadyl dose was on Monday and she is no longer limping on the leg we were worried about. We are hoping it will stay like that. Unfortunately, she is now limping on one of her corn dog feet. We will have the vet give her leg a good "once over" when we are there this Saturday. Took Miriam to a get together for GPA-WI in Madison and she enjoyed being with her own kind. RainysMom (Kim Jones) was there with her husband, Bruce and the pups Zeke and Larry. Victor (Victor Barger), his wife and pups Joy and Gilgun were also there. Miriam's next doggy get together will be in a few weeks and we head north to Door County where they have their annual harvest festival in Sturgeon Bay. The local greyhound adoption group will be set up there. There will be something for all of us: greyhounds, crafts, old cars, food, and music.
  20. So sorry to hear about Crouton. Sending hugs.
