Uh, don't mean to sound dumb, but how do you know when a dog has a headache? What should we look for? I don't know if the milk would work for Beans since he's male and the estrogen/prolactin is a treatment aimed specifically at female dogs.

I've posted here before about Stoney's storm phobia and how NOTHING really works short of 3 Valium (which really just make him stoned - still scared but too stoned to worry about it ). Well, the other night we had a big storm - it was much worse south of us (tornadoes, power is still out to a lot of people in the Chicago area), but we got hit with a nice one too. I had on the National Geographic HD channel so I didn't get the storm warnings quickly enough to get Stoney's pills in him so I figured I'd just let him freak out in peace. What do you know - that danged dog was just fine with the storm! He had one episode where he sat up on the couch and panted for a little while, but that didn't last more than 5 min. He even went outside in the rain and the thunder and the lightning to pee! When he got back in he was shaking a little - but no where NEAR what he usually does. Then he proceeded to sleep either on the floor or the sofa until it was over. I am absolutely gobsmacked! For the past 3 years we've been trying everything we could think of to calm him down and now he's figured out how to calm himself?! For what it's worth - we tried the 'ignore him and the storm' method initially - it never worked before. I really hope I haven't jinxed myself by posting this...

Beans (my 7yo boy) had a similar problem. The vet cultured the urine - nothing was found. Since he was only leaking a little and only while completely relaxed/asleep, she figures it's incontinence and prescribed PPA. He's been on it about 3 weeks now - but at a SIGNIFICANTLY reduced rate. My vet prescribed 50 - 100mg per day, but Dr Bill said to give 12.5-25mg so we started there. He's getting only 12.5mg/day and it seems to have stopped the dribbles. Better yet is that he's not having any weird side effects - he's still the same goofy dog he's always been.

wow, I've never seen that! I know that Stoney had a staph infection on his rear and chest that was mimicking kennel acne. It was REALLY bad when we first got him - he was on antibx's for 2 weeks orally and topically. Hope it clears up soon, sorry I don't have any more insight.

Beans had no parasites (no worms, no fleas, no ticks, no tick diseases, no ear mites) Stoney had Babesia - but he was treated before I got him. We re tittered but he was SOOOO low it was negative per my vet.

My cat did that once - but she was actively chewing on the laptop cord (stupid cat). I didn't realize it until I heard her yelp - which is a weird noise for a cat to make!

Oh man, that looks painful! Poor little girl - poor you. I was going to suggest a squirt bottle of betadine/bandaid wash (what we use - but it's getting pricey, so we'll probably switch) so you could at least rinse it from a distance. Can you have someone hold her head and give ear scritches while you re bandage? I know it's an awkward location, but maybe an infant sock with no toes could be taped over a bandage to keep her from unwrapping it?

I asked, she was pretty adamant that it wasn't necessary since he had a full work up (blood & urine tests) last Friday. I've thought about this. I'm wondering if the leakage was related to the food switch (we were feeding Orijen, but changed to Blue Buffalo Wilderness) - I'll have to look at my records to see when we made the switch. They only get one meal of kibble, the other is raw. My vet mentioned DES, but wasn't sure if it would work well for a male. She also mentioned testosterone, but again wasn't sure of the effects.

About a month ago I started finding wet spots on the couch. They appeared while I was at work and were always very sporadic. None of the spots were large or in 'marking' positions. Then I noticed that Beans was smelling like pee, so I finally knew who the culprit was. I slapped a belly band on him and discovered that while he was sleeping he would leak anywhere from a few drops to a tablespoon or more of urine. We took him and his pee to the vet, she had it cultured and NOTHING was found. I questioned her on the possibility of a UTI and she is pretty certain that he doesn't have one (his urine was nicely concentrated and there were no RBC's or WBC's present at all). Her feeling is that, while rare, it's incontinence and that it would be best to start treating it with PPA. What I'm concerned with is the potential side effect of stroke. So I'm calling on the greyhound community to help me research the frequency of side effects when PPA is taken alone and in combination with other drugs for other conditions. Luckily I have a very very understanding vet who has greyhound experience but is always open to new research and other people's experience. Thank you for your help!

I am pretty sure he'll be just fine. My guys ate a half bowl of month old tuna salad and the only side effect was extremely stinky gas (and two pups who looked a little uncomfortable)!
