  1. We had to call animal poison control once after a friend's hound licked up some Kilz. They recommended putting the peroxide in milk and letting the dog drink it. Said that if you just pour it down their throat it can irritate the throat and cause coughing. I've had to give mine peroxide once. The girls drank it in milk and threw up right away. Rocky drank it and nothing. So we syringed some down his throat ... still nothing. Second dose - up came everything. 2. If this is Dr. Rosen, Vic had a horrible time trying to get him on the phone and to call her back when Warrior was going through chemo. It was so bad they switched vets mid chemo treatment. I think he's so busy now that they got bought out by VCA he doesn't have the time he used to. She had to bug the crap out of them to get any answers at all.
  3. I agree, just open his mouth and shove the pills down. I wouldn't worry too much if he doesn't eat today. If you have diarrhea and are throwing up you probably don't feel like eating either. I'd try and encourage him to drink so he doesn't get dehydrated. Just my opinion, but I usually make them skip a meal or two if their stomachs are upset. I figure it gives the digestive system a chance to calm down a bit, and then I introduce bland foods. Hope it's just some flukey thing and he's feeling better again soon. Whenever I hear bloody diarrhea I immediately think of worms of some kind.
  4. Mimi had a vestibular episode about a year, year and a half ago. She's 14.5 now so was probably around 13 then. She was fine one minute and the next couldn't get up, had a stiff neck, eyes were wonky, etc. Rushed her to our vet and he gave her antibiotics and steroids and said to watch her and bring her back the next day. She was minimally better the next day, but there was a tiny bit of improvement. It took her probably a month to fully recover and lose the slight head tilt. VERY scary when it happened. I thought for sure she'd had a stroke or something. It's never happened again, and she's fairly healthy at 14.5.
  5. We had really bad luck w/ the shredded blend. I've been trying to find a food that agrees with everyone and doesn't bankrupt us for 4 dogs. I called Purina and according to them they're going to start selling the original chicken formula again. They don't have any plans for the beef (which is what we feed) or the lamb, but she said if enough people call and complain they would probably consider selling those again also. Those shredded pieces just gross me out. And, it gave Mimi diarrhea which is especially yucky in a 14.5 yr old that poops in her sleep sometimes.
  6. I'm so sorry They may be little, but they huge in personality. Hugs- Kelly Kiki & Bean the cockatiels
  7. Mimi (age 14) has had a couple of big, ugly bruises on her belly the past year and a half or so. FIrst one I freaked out and had my vet meet me at 10:30 on a Sunday night. After blood work and everything we think she just bruises easily. I'm never sure what she's done to get one, I usually look over and see it. She's not as steady on her feet as she used to be. I have Vitamin K here to give her if she gets one. As long as it doesn't get bigger from when I first notice it my vet said to just keep an eye on it. They're usually gone in less than a week.
  8. Thanks Kelly - I just got back with some Poise pads for Spencer's belly bands. He now won't lay down because he doesn't like the belly band or the pads Oh well, he will get tired and give up eventually. It's not like they're hurting him! Thanks for the tip! Poor Spencer! I'm sure he'll adjust to how they feel. Another friend had a dog w/ LS who leaked a lot and always smelled like urine. THe pads made a huge difference for him. Kept him dry and much less smelly. He didn't like the extra padding, but he did get much perkier when he was dry on a regular basis! Kelly
  9. When my friend's dog was on Pred and having a lot of accidents she had great success with putting a Poise pad in the bellyband. They absorb a lot of urine and also help keep the dog dry. Target sells mattress pads that are flat, not fitted, that are waterproof. We use those on the floor for Mimi. I think they run about $8.99 and are almost the size of a twin mattress. Kelly
  10. Mimi (age 14) is the same way. I got her when she was 8 and she used to weigh around 75lbs. I had her at the vet a couple of weeks ago for bloodwork and she's down to 54. Her bloodwork is totally normal and she eats great. We just switched her to Go Dog food and she seems to be looking a little better. I don't want her to get too heavy because her back end is getting weak, but I'd like her to gain about 5lbs.
  11. Rocky had one that looked like that. Vet said it could be histiocytoma or a mast cell tumor, that it was hard to tell just by looking at it. We had it removed instead of doing a biopsy. Figured I'd rather just take it off and be done instead of doing the biopsy and finding out it had to come off anyway. Luckily it was a histiocytoma. Kelly
  12. I'm so sorry about Jaycie. I remember her hanging out w/ the greyhounds when we had the family reunion at your place. She was such a sweet girl, I'm glad I got to meet her. Kelly
  13. Hi All- My friend's 9.5 yr old grey has just been diagnosed with non-epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphosarcoma. She's having trouble finding anyone w/ any sort of clue about this. Her normal vet wants to send her dog, Ax, to the vet school at the University of Missouri. They're talking radiation & chemo, he'd have to stay for a month and the cost would be about $10,000. No sort of idea on what sort of outcome or life expectancy he would have. She's definately not going this route. The local oncologist is leaning more toward chemo, but again he can't give her any idea of if it would have any success. No one seems to have any idea of the prognosis, other than it's Poor. She's waiting to hear back from OSU. I just thought I'd throw it out to GT to see if anyone has had any experience or thoughts to share. As a side note, one of her other hounds was diagnosed with Lymphoma the same day. They're doing chemo for him. He's not even 7.
  14. I think the drug for the bleeding is Aminocaproic acid Dr Couto told our group about it Good luck!
  15. My vet usually prescribes Previcox over Rimadyl or Deramax. We've had very good luck with it. I had a foster that Deramax didn't help but 1/2 a Previcox will completely stop her limping. I've had several hounds on it and have never had a bad reaction.

    Mahogany

Diane, I'm so sorry to hear about Mahogany.
  17. Mimi is also on the Synovi G3 and we've had no gas issues.
  18. Molly gets those every once in awhile. They always just fall off.
  19. We have a foster dog in our group, Ivan, who was returned to us in late summer 07. He was in horrible shape (long story) and had lymph nodes the size of baseballs on his neck, back legs and groin. It was definately NOT caught early. He was down to 65lbs (should be 90) and had lost most of his hair. We decided to go ahead and try chemo on him. He's done very well with the chemo. Our vet said many times they consider it in remission after the first treatment. Ivan wasn't considered in remission until the last treatment of the first round. Even now, his lymph nodes will start swelling again when he's on one of his breaks from chemo. BUT, he's happy, eating and back up to almost 90lbs. You'd never know he was sick. He even caught a rabbit in the back yard the other day! According to the notes our director had from Dr. Couto, lymphoma can respond very well to treatment. Ivan is 11 and we hope he's got lots of time left to be chasing rabbits. Kelly
  20. Yea Harley!!! He's such a fighter It was funny, on Monday we were there and he ate the scrambled eggs Cindy brought him. There's a Mexican restaurant across the strip center from the vet that's owned by this really mean lady, who's luckily a dog lover. So, we went over and asked her if she could scramble him some more eggs. She did it and didn't even charge us for them!!! Greyhounds make even mean people nice
  21. Hi! I saw Harley this morning and he looks great. They're very optimistic about him right now. I know Jamie will fill everyone in more after she goes to see him. Kelly
  22. My old girl Mimi's "pup" Fly had to be put to sleep today. She was 11.5 yrs old. She had an inoperable tumor around her urethra that was keeping her from urinating. Fly was a really special girl. She's got lots of pups and grandpups out there. Many are pets and many are still racing. I kept in contact with her owner for 4 years before she retired from having pups last June. He got her from the farm she was on to me in St. Louis, and she began her retirement here at my house with her mom. I was torn when one of the families that had adopted one of my special needs fosters decided they wanted to adopt Fly. I really wanted to keep her for myself, but after thinking about it I realized she'd have a fabulous home with them and would have a stay at home mom to spoil her rotten. Sadly, Fly's family only got to spoil her for 4 months. Even though it meant I only got her for a short time, I'm so glad that they decided to add her to their family. I'm also grateful her owner, Mick Massa, remembered that I wanted her and made sure to get her to me when she was done having pups. She was a special girl and we'll all miss her. Run Free Fly!!
  23. Hi! I know Jamie is going to update when she gets home. I got to go see Harley tonight and he looks amazing considering how bad he was yesterday. They moved him back to the regular vet, which I think made Jamie really happy. Our regular vet is fantastic and will spend the night at the clinic with him if there is any worry. Jamie and her boyfriend have done such a great job making sure Harley gets everything he needs. Hopefully he'll be looking even better tomorrow after a good night's sleep! Kelly
  24. It may not mean anything, but with our group we've found that dogs that have Irish parents seem extra sensitive to the anesthesia. We've also had some really bad luck w/ offspring of Flying Oak (including one of his littermates). Most of our old gals come through surgery fine, but if they're Irish or related to Oak our vet knows to be extra careful - and we've still had problems. But, you're right - it's not fair and nothing will make it feel any better.
  25. Oh no! I'm so sorry. Harley is such a sweet boy, I'm glad he has you guys taking care of him. I don't think there's a right or wrong thing to do. You know Harley and whatever you decide will be the correct thing for him. Let us know if you need anything. I know Cindy is going to call you tomorrow. Kelly
