Last Fall, Lily pulled a claw completely out from the quick, when she snagged it in the carpet. Search “broke claw” here for several posts about this. Since then, I got a Conair pet nail groomer and do her nails twice a month, reducing the length (it takes a while, since the length of the quick can get out of hand).

I was amazed at all the products out there, when I went to do research for this video. You're going to like what I've put together, though - Watch for 12 minutes, and you won't have to spend hours sorting through search results and looking at labels in the pet store. I ended up switching Lily to one that's going to save me over $1,000 over the rest of her life. Plus, enjoy watching background footage, "Life Cycle of Greyhounds." Gail

Oh, my goodness, I was just about to create a post about this...but now I'll just add to yours, and hope that it helps! I just created a helpful video about greyhound "statuing." It took a lot of research to put it together, but it was worth it; to be able to show what goes on in their heads, and how you can get her moving again. I like Sandy's "Wait" technique, too.

I use a Gentle Leader with Lily, even since she knocked me over, and I ended up at a Level 1 Trauma Center with a broken jaw. They're much more secure than they look and are very effective. I've even seen them used on service dogs.

How much of the Vetri-stuff do you give your dog? After seeing this post, I bought Lily the Bladder Strength pills and the Vetri Bladder chews. She's 65 lbs.. Also, do you think 8 years is too early to start having some spotting here and there? I've been seeing similar signs to what Bobbles described: occasional spotting during the afternoon, when she's having her nap and her bladder is the most full. Unlike UTI messes, there is barely any smell at all. Gail

Is that a Bad to the (Milk-)Bone collar?!

Grace's experience with the embedded grit made me think, how about an warm epsom salt soak or cloth? I've had good luck with bringing deep infection and embedded debris to the surface with epsom salts. Apply for 10 minutes, dry it, finish with a light coating of antibiotic ointment (3 times a day). If nothing else, it will be really clean! A doctor taught me how to do this, years ago, when I had an abcess. It's a good, gentle therapy. Gail

I'd love to get a nice, big summer safety tip thread going here. Even after decades with greyhounds, I still run across safety tips I never heard before. For instance, I didn't realize that on July 4th, more pets get lost than any other day of the year. This video has more helpful tips.
