Vet says he is healthy, clear lungs, heart sounds good, normal temp. A little Irritation to his trachea. No xrays unless it continues. Vet suggested a cough suppressant as needed. The episodes are less and less, only one short one around 4:30am, yes i was up to hear it. Nothing since. Phew! No more hard treats for Charlie! I may try slippery elm, i do have raw honey which i gave him a little of. It is antibacterial and soothing. Thanks for every ones support. Oh and no i can't post a video anyhow, i have a "senior' phone lol but i do have a new camera that i have to try and get used to so i can get video.

XTRAWLD i like the idea of using slippery elm. I will see what happens today.

i know it is highly contagious tbhounds- i foolishly was convinced by two ppl i know who are knowledgeable with dogs to wait, so i cancelled his appt today. Charlie was fine all day, i was gone only 3 hours. Tonight he is doing the gagging again so i have an appt @ 9:20 with the vet who has had Greyhounds. I won't cancel this one!

tbhounds, Charlie isn't around other dogs besides my German Shepherd. We have a fenced in back yard but do go on walks in the neighborhood. racindog i do feed tripe but actually tear it apart finely when i use it but will look even more carefully! He slept well, i think i would've been woken if he retched during the night as i am a light sleeper. This morning he did it twice but not more than once in a row unlike last night where it was several times in a row each time. I will be calling my vet this morning. Thanks again everyone.

thanks Walliered, i thought about antibiotics if it is a scratch. So far over an hour without an episode, hope it continues that way. Scary when it does! I worry too much and think the worst. Thanks to all who replied as i can relax a little unless it happens again.

thanks again moneypenny, i should have said it wasn't his dinner time yet not that he didnt want to eat. I debated but gave him bland dinner (he is on raw diet) and put it on a platter so it would slow his eating.He was hungry. I was realizing i have been buying "Texas Holdem" treats and feeding them recently. They are hard and maybe it scratched his throat. I will stop those and stop coconut oil too just in case. My two are having doggie hoodsie cups at the moment. Hopefully no more episodes as it is very scary. fingers crossed

It is more like wretching and he hasn't eaten dinner.

he has had that when getting excited.(I assume reversed sneezing and covered nose for a few seconds. He was just laying there soundly on the couch, horrible gagging sound with mouth wide open. Reverse sneezing to me never seemed this bad, i've seen that in many dogs. This is new this week.

I came here right after Charlie had a gagging episode, 2nd one this week. I am unnerved. I saw LP mentioned and hope it isn't that. For about 3 days he has slept in another room which is very unusual for him. He was just on the couch with me which made me happy but just woke up doing this. I will call the vet tomorrow! Anyone have this in thier dog all of a sudden?

Does Leias stomach rumble? My German Shepherd who is almost 13yrs has a condition called EPI and Sibo. Although i am not suggesting that your pup has this, if she has a rumbling tummy something is bothering her. IBD? My German Shepherd is now eating well and playful after a long course of antibiotics. She does get fed raw but gently cooked in her old age and stinky green tripe which has natural enzymes has helped her. My Greyhound Charlie is fine but is on the same diet but not cooked.

The moves and schedule changes could be why. If you are gone a long time during the day do you have someone who could come walk him? Good luck, hope Dudley will settle in soon. Sometimes Greyhounds can be very cat like :-) It takes awhile to adjust to change.

How old is Dudley? He doesn't look old but he has the same symptoms of my 13yr old who has "Sundowners" ccd canine cognitive dysfunction. She only gets that way as the sun goes down. She is now on Zylkene and it has helped immensely. I hope you find answers. We all hate to see our dogs in distress.

As long as your dog doesn't have a sensitivity to a particular protein it is fine to switch within the same brand of food. Formulations are similar within the same brand, just don't go from a with grain to a grain free without transitioning for a week or 2 weeks. I imagine it is Chicken a la veg to Salmon a la veg? Also, you can mix the two flavors.

So sorry this happened to Harvey. I've had the same experience but luckily Charlie defended himself. I get so angry @ dog owners who have unleashed dogs. I used to walk Charlie around the neighborhood quite happily, he loved it! Down by the Charles River etc. He was attacked in front of our home about a year ago by an un leashed aggressive dog. Charlie defended himself but unfortunately he gets a little reactive with seeing strange dogs now, I don't blame him. He gets overly excited and nips at the closest thing which has been me so I bought a muzzle. I walked him around the neighborhood with his new muzzle and he seemed calm and it was good to be able to do that again. Then about 3 weeks ago I was walking him, luckily unmuzzled, as my neighbors dog who is tied up outside a lot, snapped his tie out and attacked Charlie. Charlie defended himself again but now it has reinforced his reactivity to strange dogs. I'm considering a Greyhound only class to help his confidence and mine. Other than my fear of confronting a strange dog all is well. He and my German Shepherd get a long wonderfully. I agree with the poster that suggested you don't allow the girl to walk Harvey anymore even if it wasn't her fault. I think also I will start carrying pepper spray or lemon juice in a squirt gun. I need MY confidence back to help him.

MY 4 yr old Greyhound is on a raw diet since I adopted him 2 yrs ago and has a gorgeous coat and teeth. More to answer your question on your older dog, my 12 1/2 yr old GSD is also on raw and two vets I see always comment on how young she looks. I started her on raw about 6-7 yrs ago because of a condition she has called EPI and it was the first time her stool was formed although she does need enzymes. Most vets won't support you with a raw diet but some will. I've read the controversy on low or high protein re: kidney disease and see that most come down on the side that a low protein diet does not help. I think the best quality diet is what will help health issues. You could try one meal raw and another meal kibble. I like a link dogaware.com, many good articles. I fed Science Diet years ago ( my vet said it was best for my dog) to one of my dogs who had sever allergies. I wish I had known about raw then because I believe he wouldn't have had all the issues he had. Cancer of a toe, siezures and in the end kidney failure. Yes it might of happened anyway but I don't believe it. I also have a new vet.

Re: treats, i'd go with fruitycakes suggestion of lamb lung since Chance has been doing well on Acana lamb, excellent food. Merrick makes freeze dried lamb lung. Stinky coat goes along with yeasty which is a reaction to food usually. Anything from potato to a protein. I have seen chicken as the biggest trigger for dogs. Also when you use a shampoo I would go with hypoallergenic and stay away from the oatmeal shampoos because of Chances allergies. I used to put in a tsp of local raw honey for one of my dogs years ago who had allergies to just about everything other than venison and environmental, hence the honey. I wouldn't suggest it to a diabetic dog of course. When you do introduce a new protein do it perhaps with a treat and wait at least a month to see if there is a reaction. Other than that I would stick with what works which seems to be the lamb. PS if the coat is dry and you don't want to chance, no pun intended, fish oil, I use approx. a tsp of raw unrefined coconut oil. Easily digested and very healthy. I buy it in a local supermarket.

Good to read the info here. My 12.5 yr old German Shepherd has Sundowners too. Zylkene worked for about 3-4 months. She was put on Alprazolam which also worked for a little while and now diazepam as of last night which seems to help. She is full of energy all day and a good eater. I did put a Thundershirt on Rhea the other night which calmed her a little.

I 3rd the Raw diet! I understand you aren't ready, it had taken me awhile to try but i'm so glad I did. If you don't want to try raw, may I suggest adding tripe to the kibble. A good canned brand is by Tripett. Stinky but healthy. Natural probiotic qualities and digestive enzymes. I use green beef tripe when i'm out of the raw tripe. Both my dogs get about 4 tbsp. each meal. Both my pups have great stools including the one with pancreatic insuffiency which is why I started raw yrs ago.
