  5. I've had no problem. I feed Duck necks and cut them with kitchen shears.
  6. Sr Grey Lover, that might work but i'm thinking Charlie would think he should go after another dog if i do that. It's the irresponsible owners i'd rather run after lol
  7. Charlie my Grey did that a lot early on. Sleep startle sounds right. You say your pup is fine when he is awake. No aggression with the other dogs or you when awake? I do believe they (Greys) sleep deeply, perhaps more so than other breeds. Continue to talk to him calmly as you are doing until he is awake. Charlie wasn't a racer but probably used to hunt. I always thought he was having a bad dream at the beginning but it is far less frequent now. I've had him 2 yrs and he has happier things to dream about. I doubt it is a seizure, i had a beautiful German Shepherd male who had seizures and was wobbly for about 15 minutes when he came out of it. Happy to say the last 14 months of his life he was seizure free.
  8. Thanks all! He is special and we look at him daily thankful he is with us. I haven't figured out how to upload pics here yet but will soon. Seems you can't upload pics from your computer but has to be from a place like photo bucket.? Still getting used to navigating the site.
  9. Thank you greyaholic, your advice is what i plan soon. Been a long hard winter here. i was going to try the click and treat practice but have yet to do it. Soon, very soon. Charlie is such a love. You truly are a Greyaholic with three! lol Bless you and thank you!
  10. I am so sorry for you loss. What a sweet and beautiful face.
  11. Unfortunately i've run into this situation also. Seems a lot of us have. I'm doing the avoidance approach now as Charlies Dad mentioned. I don't like it but for now it is my best choice. I have a good relationship with the animal control officer in my town luckily. I met her where i work, i always thought she was abrupt and mean for lack of a better word. Now i understand because of what she sees in her position. I have contacted her about loose dogs when i walk, we have a leash law here. She said if my dogs hurt another dog it would not be my fault but i do not want that to happen so i avoid for now. I have a GSD, Rhea, who is almost 12yrs old and Charlie my Greyhound who is four as of the other day. Charlie was attacked almost a year ago by and off leash Chow mix and now Charlie is reactive with strange dogs where he never had been. I actually tried to get in between the dogs, as stupid as that might have been but it was my instinct to protect my dog. Charlie is powerful and lunged forward at the Chow who backed off. Then the idiot owner ran down to retrieve his off leash dog who it turns out attacked a person jogging 2 months prior. My husband said i sounded like a long shoreman, which i did. When the owner said sorry my blood boiled as sorry wasn't good enough! It should not have happened in the 1st place. The dog officer came down hard on the owners of the Chow who is never off leash now. Now i have to work at Charlie not being reactive. I'm a little nervous about this and will go slowly. After this episode Charlie saw another dog and went into a frenzy. He redirected it at me and bit my inner thigh. OWWW. I'm thinking i may muzzle him just so I can be less anxious. What's everyone opinion on that? in the meantime i continue to avoid where i once happily walked him around the neighborhood.
  12. If it is the hard plastic Nylabone it will get sharp pieces with a heavy chewer. You were right in suggesting your friend to take it away, Pigs ears are great but a little greasy, a cow ear might be better for both or a bully stick. I would still supervise when the bully stick gets small.
  13. Hi Grey pup I go to a site EPI4dogs.com because my German Shepherd has EPI, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency. I am not suggesting that Dakota has this at all but the site has info on so many stomach issues. There is a "search" button to type in what you are looking for with an abundance of articles. You can also post questions and get quick responses. The woman who oversees this site has done extensive research. I hope you find and answer and he feels better soon! As Greyaholic mentioned, pumpkin can be very helpful for digestion. You didn't say what you feed but trying a limited ingredient dog food may be helpful. Keep us posted on his tummy issues.
  14. I wanted to give a brief background on my Charlie. He has a "gotchya" day rather than a birthday as he has no tatoos. I worked in a local Greyhound Shelter for 1 1/2 years and loved all the dogs and gave individual attention to all. I was there as staff 8 hrs a day, 4 days a week. I took pride in bringing the very shy ones around who were eventually adopted. Charlie remained for 10 months because he was so fearful of strangers. People would look at him and admire his beauty but he would stay at the back of the stall. Charlie got a long with all the dogs, we would only let two at a time out together for a run to make sure they got a long, muzzled at first. All his friends 1 by 1 got adopted. I'll leave out the part why i left the shelter but knew i had to take Charlie with me, My husband and I took our 10 yr old (at the time) female German Shepherd to meet him. She loves all people but can be a little reactive with strange dogs but loved Charlie immediately. So it is two years today he is part of out family, we love him so much. He was never on the track but found starving, mutilated tail, curled up in someones barn in Indiana. He had been spotted for over a month but now they had him in his weak state and brought him to the vet. He has a little boxer tail now that wags. His foster mom brought him to the shelter i was at in MA in hopes he would find a home and be loved. She already had 5 dogs and couldn't keep him. I've been told they use Greys as hunters in parts of the South and we suspect that's what Charlie was bred for. He is 90 lbs of muscle. Broader than most Greys but is a Grey. He is now loved and in his forever home!
  15. 4 months is not a long time for some Greys to settle in, especially with new people. So sorry you had to go through this. Did your dog walker visit while you were home so he could get to know the walker comfortably? Anyhow, good idea to have him checked out by a vet to rule out anything medical. Let us know what happens, i imagine you will have someone else come let the dog out? Best if everything!
  16. I'm new here, a couple of weeks. Have yet to be able to upload a picture of Charlie but will soon. Had to share Charlie my Greys bday today with everyone :-)
  17. I'm new here also. I work for a pet food supply company so was interested in this topic. I've had dogs all my life and i'm old lol I have a 12 yr old GSD and a 5 yr old Grey, they are both on a raw diet. It has worked for my dogs. I started it about 7 yrs ago for my German Shepherd who has EPI. She is doing wonderfully and my Greyhound has a gorgeous coat! I saw Fromm mentioned, love that food and Acana and Orijen, Earthborn. Do what works for you but please read the ingredients, no need to break the bank to buy a great food.
  18. Hi All I am new to this site. I have a 12 yr old GSD and a 5yr old Greyhound. Approximate age as he wasn't on the track and has no tattoos. I wanted to add one thing re: aggression. Has Anders ever been tested for Lyme? It can cause aggression that wasn't seen before. However I agree with George that Anders should not have been allowed to be pushed by your friend. Looking forward to being part of this group!
