  1. My greys siezures were caused by hypothyroidism.Once he was put on thyroid meds he never had another one.Could be from a number of things, inculing a brain tumor, but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion without a second opinion.Others on this board will have lots of info for you.Hope it's not that serious.
  2. Sounds like you won the raw food lottery!
  3. Sounds like you made a good evaluation of the situation! The added water and routine disruption could definitely throw her off. What you are doing should help her get back on schedule.Good luck!
  4. Having had 3 seperation anxiety dogs,I also think this is mild seperation anxiety. The pacing, wining, yawning, tongue flicking and shaking are all anxiety signals.Dogs will sometimes urinate/defacate when anxious. You are doing the right thing by not making any interaction with the dog when leaving. Are you rushing around before you leave?they pick up on that.My current hound does the same as yours. He's fine when we go to work but if we leave at an odd time together he will be O.K. sometimes but have a total meltdown at other times. He's only gone in the house a few times,so we're lucky with that.Time and continued work in decreasing anxiety should help. Also, does she drink a lot of water? If she does, maybe you could restrict it a bit for now.Make sure she has ample time to emty her bladder in the morning.Good Luck!
  5. I found that walking 2 dogs on one split lead made them constantly vie for who would be in front.Plus, if one stopped to sniff and the other kept going the stopped one would get yanked.I now use 2 separate leads, both held in one hand.If you need to shorten the lead for passing cars, etc. just slide your other hand up both leads at the same time. It's really not hard to walk 2 dogs at the same time, but if you don't watch what they are doing one can end up peeing on the other one's head if they are boys!
  6. I've been reading about venison to feed to my dog.I did find out that there is a disease called Chronic Wasting Disease that is affecting deer and elk in certain parts of the country. It's similar to mad cow disease. It's a protein that enters the brain, lymphatics and marrow of infected animals and is fatal. So far, there has been no reports of crossover to other species but to play it safe it's recommended to make sure none of these parts of the deer are eaten.
  7. I'd be worried about a toxic spider bite. Can you check if he has a fever? Is he eating and drinking?
  8. You said his eyes appeared sunken.I would be concerned with uveitis too.Mine had it as part of ehrlichiosis and the eyes got soft and sunken. Did your vet perform a tear production test and a pressure test? If symptoms are not resolving maybe these should be done.
  9. My greys get spots from being in the sun, similar to the spots people get when they spend a lot of time in the sun.they fade in winter.
  10. Just ordered my 1st case of chicken quarters @ 30.00 for the 40lb case. Not a bad price.
  11. Thanks for the clarification of normal T4 level result. Yes, his T4 was normal.I never actually saw the results so I'm going to get a copy to see what it was.
  12. I know that this is a very debated issue, and I really appreciate all points of view.I always look at both sides of the viewpoints and experiences to make the most informed descision possible. Thanks to anyone that offers their experiences.
  13. I've had him since march,His buddy died in july, He went into separation anxiety right after,is currently on 10mg of prozac, down from original dose of 40mg,still has some anxiety when leaving home but will usually settle and no longer tries to break out of doors and windows.Coat was really rough and dull when we got him,is now smooth and shiny but is getting increasingly bald over time.Currently is on pro plan, other better foods give him diahhrea and bad gas.I am planning on switching to a raw diet.does not seem lethargic, but not exactly perky like our others were.Cannot afford more vet bills that come with getting him another buddy, wish we could.I will get a complete thyroid panel done. he only had T4 run which was normal. The redness of his skin is concerning to me too. This is not a rash, this is more of a flushing. His skin color was literally black from sunburn when we got him from the alabama sun.I also had a CBC/chem screen done when I got him, which was normal at that time.He is 5years old,and has been off the track since last December. Also, is there a preference for where his thyroid panel is run? Thanks for everyone's input.I'm not looking for problems where there probably is none, but Ijust want to make sure I'm not missing something that I don't know about.I've had too many really bad surprises in the last year and don't care to have another if I can help it.
  14. Heres another pic.Sorry, I'm just learning how to post!
  15. vHere are the front views if I did it right.
  16. Since it is happening by the doors and windows it could be S/A.Can you pretend to leave and sneak by a window outside to see if he's whining and pacing and looking for you? S/a usually happens within the 1st 1/2 hour after you leave, so you might get a better idea if it is S/A or not.
  17. We slap it all the time! It just looks so spank-a-dorable!
  18. I think heartworms and roundworms are the same type of worm that infect different areas of the body and thats why it can kill both.It probably only works at the beginning of infestation though, just like with heartworms
  19. I agree with vjgrey. If the teeth aren't too bad, you can scrape the tarter off yourself with a scaler that you can get from a pet supply store, and if you brush your dog's teeth and use an anti tarter spray several times a week she won't need dentals anymore.I've always taken care of my own dogs teeth so They wouldn't need to get dentals and my vet always tells me they look fantastic. It's really not hard to do, just a few minutes 3 or 4 times a week, once you get the hang of it. My dogs have always been very cooperative with it. Also, if the vet is concerned with bacterial endocarditis, can't the dog be given a prophylactic dose of antibiotic before the dental? That's what I have to do before dentals because I have a heart murmur.
  20. I've been wanting to know what they are too! My grey that I adopted in March has the same thing all over both his thighs and he's almost completely bald on his back legs, all the way down,Definitely NOT one of the prettiest greyhounds I've owned, but I love him anyway. Oh, and his skin color is almost black,in fact, it does turn black if he's out in the sun for any length of time.
  21. For those of you that feed raw, about how much does it cost per month to feed one dog raw?I'm trying to figure out if I can afford to do it. Does anyone feed some kibble and some raw?I've read that feeding kibble with raw food is not good because the kibble allows the bacteria to multiply in the gut.I'm getting a lot of resistence from the others in my family who also feed the dog if I'm not home.I'm trying to figure out a way to do this and at the same time keep peace in the house.Wish me luck, I'm gonna need it!
