Martin was chipped when he went for his first dental. Emmet was going to be chipped but raised such a fuss at the vet that they decided to wait until the next good opportunity. Reading and tracing his Irish tats would be an exercise in futility.

My sympathies. Martin broke his toe (right front outside not weight bearing) on October 1st. Just this week we let him out unsupervised for a little run around the back yard. The biggest challenges were keeping the whole thing dry and keeping him from licking his foot once the dressings/splint were removed. Our vet had us coming back every week to change the splint and dressings. At one point he had some little pressure point injuries on his foot from the bandages. One week we ended up at the vet three times for splint replacements. It's now two months later and we took our first walk yesterday. Even then, I had him wear a little boot on it with a kiddie sock. But he's absolutely not limping outside, though he holds his foot up periodically in the house.

I'm a relatively new greyhound owner. The prevalence of bone cancer in these pups is confounding. I am so grateful that the veterinary research community is interested in studying and combating this horrific disease.

I hope you continue to update us on your boy Mork. So many corns. So many bad toes. Hard to know what to do.

I'm sorry you and your pup are going through this. Years ago, we had a great Dane who had many grand mal seizures. We learned to anticipate them by a metallic smell in the room just before a seizure. I wish we'd had the support of a group like Greytalk. Good luck to you all.

Our vet gave Martin orange and black bandages for Halloween when he broke his toe. By far the biggest challenge was keeping the bandage dry. We ended up putting adult stretchie socks over the splint and dressings, which were quite bulky. The socks stayed on with a little velcro band. When he went outside, we put an IV bag (tied with a gauze strip) over the whole thing. (Of course being a guy, he had a tendency to pee all over his leg, bandage and all, so we put another plastic bag over the IV bag. ) Then we had to take all the plastic off when he come in so the foot would get air. I found some cheapie felt booties with plastic soles on Ebay to use once the splint came off. At that point, the challenge was to keep him from licking his leg. We used a muzzle strategically and the sock went back on at night. I also ordered some Cushie Paws (size medium) from Thera-Paws to keep something on his foot once all the dressings came off, but they were too small. The Cushie Paws sizing doesn't match with the Thera-Paws sizing. I hope all goes well for your little girl. She'll be so pain free when it's all healed all the hassle will be worth it. :)

Does anyone know what red armpits and ears mean? Just wondering. Hope your houndie is feeling better.

Emmet chatters so loud DH can hear him without his hearing aids.

Emmet was always getting new scrapes after we adopted him. Seems it took a while to figure out (us and him) the rough places in the yard. Emmet has a very skimpy white coat and every nick and tear shows bright pink. Martin on the other hand...he has a thicker brindle coat and doesn't seem to be so susceptible to scraping injuries. Yogi is the same way. Our vet told us to be very very careful about vet wrap--not to wrap it too tightly. Apparently, it causes swelling if too tight.

About the coat--we give our boys brewer's yeast with garlic. We get it at the local pet food store--1000 "tasty" chew tabs for about $12.00.

I just voted that the fees aren't high for the services provided. That having been said, the services available far exceed anything I ever imagined before becoming a greyhound owner.

Much as I hate corns, I'm soooo glad to hear it was only a corn. There are lots of ideas for dealing with them. Thankfully you were able to hook up with a specialist who recognized what it was (after being prompted and prodded by you). About your regular vet, I don't know you situation but I can tell you what we did. After our regular vets--whom we love--missed Emmet's corn despite multiple visits and diagnostics, we decided to go to a more greyhound saavy vet for the corns. She's about an hour away, in Central MA. Our regular vets are about 4 miles away, have great hours, and they are willing to fit us in right away on a phone call. We go to them for the lacerations, Martin's broken toe, the dentals, the preventatives. One of their assistants owns a greyhound and they treat other greyhounds in their practice. At this point, I comfortable with them and I respect the fact that they acknowledge the differences between greys and other breeds. If I had any doubts, I'd be vet shopping, too. YOU did good! I'll bet that lots of GT folks (and lurkers like me for the past year) head right for GT whenever a new symptom or problem comes up. Like parents, we are the best advocates for our greyhounds. You also might want to consider asking for a refund of some or all of the $$$$$. I took me six months but eventually I was reimbursed for xrays and other services when an e-vet failed to recognize common kennel cough. But that's another story. Please keep us posted on your boy's progress with the corns.

The battery operated toothbrush is one of Emmet's favorite things. DH goes into the bathroom, puts the poultry flavored toothpaste on it and Emmet is licking his chops before DH comes into the room. Martin could care less.

I think a lot of folks who buy Kirkland also buy Pedigree for mix-ins. It's sold in small cases on the shelves just a few feet away from the kibble.

Yogi scraped the front of his leg pretty badly this summer sailing over the retaining wall in our back yard. The vet cleaned it up, gave him an antibiotic and some Rimadyl, and left it uncovered. It healed beautifully, but I'd have to add that he left it alone.

Emmet is hiccuping right now. He looks confused and miserable. He ate about half and hour ago. I'm hoping he'll just fall asleep.

Whoa--$186 for that broken toe??? Lucky you! Martin's ended up being almost $900 with two sets of x-rays, pain and antibiotic meds, and 7 bandage/splint changes at $44 per visit. It didn't help that he developed a couple of small but painful pressure sores on his foot under the bandage/splint. He's doing fine but we're still leash walking him for potty breaks in our backyard only and absolutely no running since October 1st.

We have ASPCA pet health insurance for Emmet, Martin and Yogi. The cost is about $50 per dog per month. We signed up right after Emmet landed at the emergency vet with kennel cough and $1100 in diagnostic/treatment charges. (That's another story .) Our plan has $100 deductible per plan period, $5000 limit per incident and $13,000 limit per plan period per dog. It covers 80% of reasonable costs, including all the preventatives (heartworm/fleas/vaccines), dental care (one annual cleaning), treatment for injuries and illness. There are a number of exclusions, including injuries related to racing, preexisting conditions, chiropractic conditions, experimental procedures. So far, we have been very happy with the insurance. We're way ahead of the game with Martin (dental, big laceration repair, broken toe $$$$$), breaking even with Emmet, and they are making money on Yogi. They are very responsive and I've always received my reimbursement check within a few weeks. I wish we had been on board with them right after we adopted. I'd recommend it--I know many folks put money aside for these expenses but the insurance works better for us.

The only time I powdered a tablet and put it in their food, they both refused to eat. Thankfully, both Emmet and Martin love their glucosamine whole with a dab of peanut butter.
