  1. Abe run free fast happy and healthy! You may have been a foster, but you were a pet too. You don't have to have an actual forever home to be a pet. Fosters are pets too! As you know that makes all the difference. Your prayer was answered and we will never forget you.

You are so right-words are simply inadequate to describe such a loving exquisite hound. Clearly she was one of a kind. My deepest sympathy.

My heart is breaking for you. I know. I'm so sorry. I just don't know what to say so I'll send a hug instead. Sometimes grief is too much for words to convey.
  6. My heart breaks for you. My deepest sympathy. Run free sweet beautiful Bea! You will ALWAYS be your moms Beautiful Bea!
  7. Might doublecheck on the tea tree oil thing. When I checked into it I found out that it was responsible for more than a few pet deaths-particularly of cats. It has to do with the way it spreads out so.
  8. My heart breaks for you. I know the utter devastation you speak of. When my soulmate Slim crosssed over suddenly at only 6 yoa I decided that one thing I would do was just not eat. I can't tell you why exactly. It just made me feel better to strike out at something-anything. Amazingly a neighbor who used to bring me food from her farm once a year suddenly appeared with lots of food. Didn't make any difference to me. An army couldn't have crammed it down my mouth. Then the Lord reminded me of Jonah, and the whale....So luckily I knew better than try and fight God Almighty and had no desire to go through what Jonah did so I grudgingly ate. I totally withdrew from life. My son wound up sending the state police to see if I was still alive. I cried to my God and He told me that Slim didn't die, that only his body did, that Slim was OK. At the same time Slim was sending me all sorts of "signs" confirming this. Eventually I learned that he AND I could STILL could move forward-just as we had when he was here in body. I have since learned that he is my spirit guide and he is with me still. In fact he originally picked me because he knew I would be able to help him on this side. I miss his being here in body but he IS with me and on my mind always. No you will never be the same. I have never been the same since Slim left either. But I have accepted the new path our realtionship has taken(as did Slim) and to be honest it is a blessing. I have shared my experience-perhaps a little too bluntly- in the hopes that it will help you to hang on. I skipped a lot so don't worry if it doesn't make sense to you at this point. Just know you are not alone. It will be OK. Tawny will always be a part of you-always be a blessing to you. Please just try and be open minded and she might even send you a "sign." 9. Goldie had that when I adopted him too. I gave him LIPIDERM and it cured it in a couple of weeks. I continued to give it to him even after it cleared because I figured he might need it and I didn't want to take any chance on him reverting back to dandruff. But it workled great and he had a georgous coat when on the Lipiderm. I say Lipiderm specifically because it is specially made to be water soluble or something-patented. You don't get that with the drug store variety fish oil. I wanted to give a supercharged treatment so he got well quick so thats why I used the more expensive Lipiderm. Kind of makes sense-you get what you pay for? Congratulations on your black houndie! I have a black named Cash. I LOVE BLACK HOUNDIES. I think they are stunningly beautiful ........as are the fawns, cowdogs, brindles, etc. etc.
  10. My greyts for the most part have been very responsive to any "commands" or wishes I routinely have. In fact they will sometimes even obey long directions involving 2 or 3 different "steps" because I communicate it to them telepathically when I tell them verbally. However I understand that they have been hardwired for 5000+ years to be a hunter and react as such and no amount of training or communication or anything else is going to change that- its genetic- its just the way it is. Therefore I never would place them in a position where their safety would be threatened if they fail to respond to a command. A greyhound will NEVER be trustworthy enough to do certain "dog" things like be off lead-not even to walk 5 feet beside of you. As long as you understand that they cannnot violate certain attributes of their genetic make-up---which may or may not influence "obedience"----I find them extremely obedient and cooperative. But it would be the very rare greyhound that would have the discipline to be as obedient as say a border collie or nice shepherd or malonois. So I said all that to say this. I have found mine to be very obedient with respect to their genetic limitations of being a hunter programmed to hunt and make decisions independent of man. (By the way, I have had track hounds and non-track hound. I didn't observe any significant difference in their basic hunting characterisitcs or their desire to learn and be obedient.) Just my opinion, hope it helps.
  11. Might try putting one boot on before her meals. Then taking it off after meals. Progress to 4 boots. I have had very good luck eliciting cooperation/desired behavior when "connecting" it to something pleasurable like the meal. Even works for getting a lot of horses to accept horse trailer. Just feed 'em in it for a while.
  12. "Please Lord if I die, let it be as a pet....so someone will remember my name." You made the prayer of all greyhounds come true for her. Retirement sofa aside, her prayer was answered thanks to you. In fact we all now share in her memory . My deepest sympathy on her loss. How wonderful though that she crossed over as a loved hound with a forever home.
  13. My heart is breaking for you. She was so blessed to have a Mom who loved her so much that you took her pain onto yourself because of your love for her. And oh_ I realize I can only imagine what a blessing she was to you when she was here. But, she will always be with you. You can never lose so strong a love. "What we have enjoyed we can never lose…All that we love deeply becomes a part of us."-Helen Keller My deepest sympathy. For love is as strong as death…. 14. Poor Chai!!! How awful!!!! Please tell your son to take a weapon with him-at least a stick. Trash dogs like your neighbors can be too much to handle without a weapon. Many greyhounds are like that. I personally consider it an attribute- they are simply "above" the bar brawl behavior of the commoners if you know what I mean. Two of my sweet hounds were like that and Goldie was attacked twice, both times by 2 neighborhood dogs running loose together. The second time I had a weapon(I learned)- a Phillipine fighting stick. I came down hard on the head right between the eyes of a big black rogue dog which took him down and then kicked the smaller dog solidly on the ribs and knocked it back several feet. The black dog then was able to get back up on his feet and then they both ran back home-where they should have been in the first place instead of attacking innocent greyhounds on the sidewalk. Later I adopted Slim and I could not believe he was a greyhound he was so aggressive. I didn't think greyhounds could even be that way due to their genetics. Anyway he was a sentry dog in a greyhound suit and while he was here we were all safe and sound-HE did the protecting. Other dogs NEVER even tried to attack him- they knew better. I learned in martial arts there is something called sai-it lets others know you are not to be messed with. He was a fearless protector and one day defended me from a dirty filfthy trashy 150# St. Bernard that was growling and aggressively coming after ME- not Slim -while I was walking him. Just like the trashy owner you describe this owner also watched without doing anything and only intervened after Slim repelled their trash hoodlum dog. I think those kind of trashy people WANT to see a fight. They certainly don't care about their dog or they wouldn't have it running loose in the first place. After this I purchased a 300000 volt stun wand to have in addition to the other weapons I carried for self defense. I didn't want Slim to get chewed up defending me from the trash roaming the streets attacking innocents. Please file a complaint with animal service. If nothing else they will probably make the jerk pay to get the animal vaccinated which it probably isn't right now. And all the documentation you can get will help get something done about the rogue sooner. Please give Chai a big hug and kiss. I hope her pretty pink coat can be repaired. A sweet smart girl like that should have a pretty pink coat. I'd tell animal control about that too. Too bad you can't make the jerk pay for it. I apologize if I come across a little strong but I was a street cop for 8 years and an animal control officer for a year also and I'm sick and tied of nice people and their nice dogs being attacked and sometimes killed by all the trash running around. It just is not safe to go on a walkie without a weapon these days. What a shame.
  15. Minny is my big guy. He has won the "tallest hound" at the Festival of the Bluegrass for the last 3 years. He is around 31" at the shoulder and around 85-90 lbs and lean. I have never been able to smooth over the pointy parts-even though he eats well. He does get quite a bit of exercise though. My soulmate Slim was a little taller and even skinnier. He had been a starvation case and bore effects of that on his body his entire life. No telling how tall he would have been had his mother and he not been starved. With the help of his holistic vet Dr. Boswell and accupuncture he did become very strong and pretty healthy however.
  16. has not set their status

  17. I know what you mean. I received an immediate sense of special joy from just looking at her pictures in the slide show. What a remarkable, lovely lady. I am so sorry she had to cross over but she definitely has left some of her special joy for us to remember her by forever more.
  18. The biggest thing I learned from experience is to be patient. They have to learn how to learn- that is what is really taking the time. Once they get that you're off to the races! Goldie took MONTHS to learn to sit. But after that it was all down hill. He would QUICKLY learn anything I asked him to after that- rolling over, many other things and my favorite-he would sit up on his hind feet like little dogs do. It took him a little while to build up the muscles to do it but he understood and did it happily. It was quite impressive to see a big male greyt sit up and beg like a chihuahua. So just be patient. They have never been asked to learn like this before and they've got to figure it out- but once they do- no problem.
