  1. Argos always slept in our room. Bootsy never does. He prefers the main floor of the house, or as we like to call it, "Middle Earth."
  2. Welcome! Where in Chicago are you? I have family in Lincoln Park, Uptown and the burbs. Great city!
  3. Welcome! I have many family members in Dover.
  4. I am so sorry, Tricia and Burke. She was lovely and so so special.
  5. Is it weird that the Queen song that popped into my head when I read this was Bicycle? I'm betting that's not the one you are referencing...spill! I think it was Queen - Big Balls
  6. My first grey loved to run, and we went to dog park 2x daily. There was a mix of dogs there, and we knew which dogs to keep a distance from. Argos was great at sticking up for himself, and I wouldn't trade those days for anything. Bootsy, on the other hand, doesn't particularly care about running or other dogs. So he's perfectly happy with walks and the occasional zoomie. All dogs are different - only you know what is right for your dog. Just be careful not to let any interactions escalate, and you'll be fine. That being said, there are a lot more poorly behaved dogs out there than good dogs, and I get increasingly frustrated when I'm places like dog parks and I see how stupid so many owners are and what kind of behavior they think is acceptable. If they pay attention at all.
  7. Bootsy had pretty bad sleep startle when we adopted him. He sounds ferocious but has never allowed his teeth to connect. As he has adjusted to living here (almost 4 years now) he has gotten used to the commotion. We still have rules and we never relax them, but I worry less. I have a 4 year old son and a newborn. There are things you can do to condition them - wake them up for treats, for example. Or toss stuffies at him while he is asleep and give him a treat when he wakes up calm. I am far too lazy to do anything but I have heard both work. As for stuffies , our rule is anything on the floor is fair game for the dog, so pick up your crap.
  8. Argos got those more than once. Keep doing what you are doing - it will heal up fine
  9. Puh-lease. This would be an appetizer for a health kick for Bootsy. She will be fine. Totally fine. I promise. You are a great mom for worrying. I can't believe there is a website dedicated to the water content of lamb lung
  10. It sounds like the activity / fun happens at the end of the day - is it possible to do a good, long, fast walk before you leave for the day? A tired dog is too tired to whine or howl. As for your neighbor, I strongly recommend that you speak directly to her. Explain that you're working with him and appreciate not only her patience, but also information - has she noticed if he reacts to outside sounds, for example? It could very well be that she's just a bit nutty and doesn't like the idea of the dog and so lets normal doggie sounds like walking and laying down annoy her. But you won't know unless you talk to her. Good luck
  11. We had a halemar coat for Argos - what a great value, and certainly adequate for a mid-atlantic winter. Now we just use a fleece, and that is fine around here.
  12. Can he sleep in the living room area while you're upstairs? If not, I'd just plan to work with him with hot dogs, american cheese, liver, and patience. He can learn them.
  13. Going slow with your dogs and your daughter in law is probably a good idea. Baby is pretty immobile for the first several months, so that will help. I'd maybe offer to baby gate the dogs in another room where everyone can see each other to start, then maybe bring one dog at a time, leashed, for meetings with both mom and baby. Encourage your daughter in law to be calm to set the example for baby. When baby is mobile and crawling around on the floor, it will likely be best to baby gate them away anyway. Enjoy the baby!!!
  14. Bootsy knows pretty much all of those words. He also chooses to ignore them.
  15. I have only had 2 greys, but neither has had any issues, even with outdoor kitties. They exist, I promise! Work with a group and you'll find the right hound for your home.
  16. We get whatever vaccination the vet says he is due for. Not something I give much thought to. I am the same way with myself and my kid.
  17. Bootsy had chronic poop issues for 3 years., regardless of food. His first poop perfect, second poop really good, third poop pudding. Every walk. Drove me nuts. We switched him off of kibble and onto a raw diet a few months ago and that was a major reason.
  18. I buy little milk bones Alton Brown makes jerky with clean a/c filters and a box fan. You could do that on your deck
  19. I have a 3.5 year old and another on the way, and our houndwas adopted when our son was a newborn. It took them a good long time to adjust.to each other. Like your PJ, my Bootsy has a heart of gold and as noisy as his objections to being space invaded have been, he has never ever truly snapped or bitten. Just scared the ever loving crap out of us! Keep enforcing those important rules, never leave PJ alone with any child(ren), and all will be well. Good luck
  20. before we switched to raw, bootsy was sporting good hillbilly teeth and his breath smelled like a barrel of rotting fish. now it is normal dog breath and his teeth are normal dog teeth. the red line at the edge of his gums is gone too. he eats 3 chicken quarters per day.
