  1. Corinna seems fine today. I guess it was some sort of passing cramp or muscle pain. These guys sure know how to worry us.
  2. Its possible she ate something but I didn't notice anything missing/chewed. She has settled down and has been sleeping for a bit now. I did noticed the area between her shoulders twitching and also the hair along her back was standing up on end when she came back in from potting earlier. I may take her to the vet on Monday if it continues.
  3. Ok, I'll just keep an eye on her. I haven't noticed her leg trembling again, She is still acting restless though. I hope she relaxes soon, she making me worry.
  4. Something odd is going on with Corinna this morning and want to know if anyone has insight as to. what could be wrong. My DH called the dogs to go out to potty this morning before he left for work. Wally ran downstairs, Corinna stayed on her bed and whined. This is somewhat odd as she is usually pretty eager to go relieve herself in the morning. I was still in bed but could hear it was raining so just figured that is why she didn't get up. An hour or so later I got up and again called Corinna to go out. She did get up but seemed wobbly. She made it down the stairs without incident though. I let her out with her coat on as she hates the rain. She just stood by the door getting wet. I brought her back in and feed the dogs. She ate with her usual gusto. After breakfast though she. Wouldn't settle, she was alternating between pacing and trying to climb on me. I figured she needed to potty so bundled my baby and myself up and walked Corinna around our backyard. She had both a pee and poop. We came back in and I noticed Corinna's left hind leg was trembling badly, to the point I could feel the vibrations on the floor. That lasted 15 minutes or so, but stll hours later she won't settle down. She keeps pacing and whining. She doesn't seem in pain but won't stay laying down for very long. This is very out of character for her. She isn't a dog that gets to nervous about things either. Does this seems like a watch and see thing or bring her to the evet now thing? Sorry this post is so long I Didn't want to miss anything.
  5. Batmom alerted me to this thread, unfortunately being in Pickering I'm probably a little far to be of much help. My first greyhound did have the same issue when I brought him home though. Time and trust were ultimately the things that turned it around. I lived in a condo in Toronto at the time so needed to leash walk him every time he had to potty. He wasn't at all food motivated and in fact wouldn't take treats from our hands at all, so coaxing with treats never worked for me either. After being growled and snapped at too I eventually learned I just had to snap a leash on him. Turn away from him and say " Let's go", and I would just walk to the door. I never jerked the leash but there were times the leash did pull him to his feet. I know some people wouldn't recommend this but really it was the only safe way to get him to his feet and outside. I also found a greyhound weekly run to join, and met up as often as possible with another greyhound in my building to walk with. These two things helped so much in helping him over come his fears. I wish you luck, I know how frustrating it can be, but believe me its all worth it.
  6. When I got my first greyhound I lived in Toronto. I went to a greyhound hour at Norwood ( I believe it was Sundays at 12, no idea if its still then or if its still held or not) it is a public dog park so we could not prevent any other dog from entering but most of other dog owners were aware the greyhounds came then and would wait until we were finished. The group got so large though and the space is relatively small and add to that a couple local residents that felt it unfair the greyhounds were there in their local park I felt it became too unsafe to bring my dogs. After that I started to make the drive up to the simcoe group and couldn't have been happier. Its a bit of a drive but worth it for a wonderful well organized and run group. Its members are great people and its so much safer for the dogs. I highly recommended you take the drive even just once to check it out. I now live in the burbs and have a large yard and a toddler ( and baby on the way) so I very rarely can make it up there anymore but I miss the group a lot and really wish I could go more often.
  7. My cat had a rib removed as well as his muscles just behind his shoulder. He had a benign tumor that became very large very quickly. He was only 3 at the time but healed very quickly from it. He surprisingly has no range of motion issues even today at 12. When you pet his side you can feel the missing muscles but other then that you would never know he is one rib and some muscles short.
  8. Corinna does this during thunderstorms too, well except the standing in the rain part as she would surely melt if exposed to rain During the day is one thing but at night I'd sure wish she would stop. It wakes up the whole house including my toddler, not fun to say the least. The only thing that seems to work is bringing her in bed with us, which isn't the best solution either as she doesn't share well (not sleep aggression or anything she just hog every last inch of the bed and then refuses to move). As I've said many times before, she's sure lucky she's cute.
  9. Maybe I have exceptionally well behaved dogs, but both of mine know the difference between their stuffies and my daughter stuffed animals. Maybe it's her scent on them or something because I never did any training on the issue but both have never chewed a single animal up. Corinna is a stuffie killer, and Wally quite enjoys them as he always brings his to the door on our arrival home and tosses them around the house often so it's not like they dont like them. On the same note I never let my daughter (22 months) touch their toys either. No exception! Wally has grabbed my daughters animals from time to time but all I did was grab give him one of his and take hers away. No damage was ever done. Watch there be a stuffed animal massacre here now that I wrote this, lol. As for sleep startle neither of mine have it either (nor did my first greyhound). Of course I make sure my daughter never touches them when they are asleep anyways but it's not something I'm overly worried about. Reading forums like this give lop sided view of behaviors as people only post about problems they are encountering. Most greyhounds actually dont have sleep aggression or sleep startle.
  10. I think that's a bit unfair to crate the dogs every time the baby comes over, after all it's the dogs who live there. I have a now 21 month old daughter who lives quite peacefully with my two greyhounds and three cats. I would do introductions slowly with the dogs leashed (and muzzled if you feel more secure that way) one dog at a time. As others have said your granddaughter will not be moving around for several months and if your dogs are anything like mine will bore of her quite quickly. I remember when we brought my daughter home from the hospital Corinna (my female) was a tad over excited at first especially when my daughter squeaked. We would just redirect her attention and give her treats when she looked away from the baby (just like cat training, lol). It was only a day or two until the novelty wore off and Corinna actually became quite protective and mothering to my daughter. My male Wally was indifferent to her from the beginning and not much has changed since. In all honesty I've had to do a lot more dog proofing with my daughter then I have had to do baby proofing with my dogs. The dogs seem to naturally be aware to be more careful around her and have never once shown any aggression. We've taught my daughter to not to go near the dogs when they are lying down, not to every take a toy from them, not to ever hit or kick them and especially never go anywhere near them when they are eating. All and all she is good with the rules because they have been instilled in her from day one. I actually love how she is with animals as she is neither fearful of them or over excited by them. Babies and dogs can live well together and I hope you get to experience this too.
  11. Although I call Wally my old man sometimes, at 8 years old he is far from a senior. He is and has always been very lazy around the house but take him outside to run and you get a different dog. He does zoomies every time he goes out which is multiple times in a day. He fetches, plays soccer and just loves to run run run. I swear he is more lab then greyhound. He hasn't shown any sign of slowing down yet and still runs circles around my 4 year old. Other then his handsome white face you would never know he was older.
  12. I'm home with him now. He seems to be handling the tramadol fine. He's a bit dopey but isn't whining or pacing. He got up to see me when I got home then went back to his bed to sleep. Poor boy looks so sore to walk, I can tell his body is aching. Hopefully he will feel better soon.
  13. talked to my mom this morning, Wally is very stiff and sore today. He is screaming when getting up and down but is rest comfortably for the most part. I'm lucky he wasn't hurt more as he did a summersault into to back fence. I'm so thankful he didn't break his neck.
  14. Wally finally settled down around midnight. He still wimpered off and on most of the night but stopped howling at least. He didn't get up when my mom got to my place and was sleeping peacefully when I left at 4. Lets pray he has a better day.
  15. E No, just the tramadol. I do have metacam here though. Would it be better?
  16. No we didn't do xrays. I didn't notice the bruise on his bum until I got home from the vet , now that's made me worry he did hurt himself more then just the skin tear.
  17. He went to me regular vet today and they are closed now. The e vet wont give advice over the phone. I hope that's the case, he was given the morphine around 5. The howling is getting worse. I'm this close to waking my daughter and going to the e vet.
  18. He hasn't been given tramadol yet just morphine. Would it have the same effect? He is howling, I've never seen anything like this before. I'm so worried he's in terrible pain.
  19. My mom let wally out in the backyard in the rain today, something I never do for this exact reason. I guess she either forgot or I didn't mention it but either way he hurt himself pretty badly. He has a 6" tear that required 18 staples to close and a huge bruise on his bum and his legs look like the went up against a cheese grater. He was given sedation at the vets as well as morphine and I was told he would be fine without any more pain killers tonight. He has tramadol to start tomorrow. Since he has gotten home he's been whining he wont settle down (just pacing and pacing) and the whining has been getting to the point of howling. I don't know if he is in terrible pain or if its the drugs causing it. I've taken him out 4 times tonight thinking he's needed to relieve himself. Only once he peed. I don't know what to do for him. I'm exhausted as I've been up since 3am for work and haven't sat down yet. I need to be at work at 4am tomorrow to so I need some sleep tonight. Please does anyone have advice. I'm home alone with my daughter (13 months) so I cant bring him back to the vets tonight. I cant stand to see him suffering like this.
  20. I'm so sorry about your loss. Dude sounds like he was an amazing hound with a beautiful spirit. Run free Dude.
  21. I think it depends largely on the dogs cold tolerance. My First greyhound would lift his feet and not want to move if his feet got cold and if it was salty he would actually lay down forcing me to have to pick all 75 lbs of him up. He was a bit of a wimp I guess. The two I have now have a lot more tolerance to the cold. Wally will limp if it's salty or very cold but isn't to bad, Corinna has never seemed fazed by cold or the salt.
  22. Corinna is back from the vets. She actually had two broken bones in the same toe and not a dialocation as I thought. The vet put a splint on the toe immobilize it (she said a splint was more stable then just a wrap) and she is on restricted exercise for 4-6 weeks.
  23. Arggg... It happened again tonight as she was going down the stairs. After the second time I put it in on Saturday morning it was fine up until now. I canceled my appointment this morning as I thought it was going to be okay. I iced it a few times and didn't let her run at all but I didn't wrap it as I was worried about causing more harm then good. I'm bringing my cat in for a abscessed tooth tomorrow so i will see if I can bring Corinna in to. Man these animals will be the death of me. Here's a picture of her toe before I put it back in joint. \ I know her nails are long (which probably contributed to the problem) but she wont let me dremel them and she gives me a hard time cutting them. I know excuses excuses.
