  1. Well, the vet *thinks* it's just a soft tissue injury. She gave us Rimadyl to give for 2 weeks. Celeste can't go running with her sisters for now (we've already been walking her for the past week). We'll see how she does after a week. If no improvement, we'll take her back for X-rays.
  2. I'm taking our 5.5 y/o grey girl Celeste to the vets office in a few minutes. She's had an on-again/off-again limp in her left rear leg for the past 10+ days. We thought that she just pulled a muscle running. We've been hand walking her for the past week, but the limp still hasn't gone away. She can get on/off furniture. The limp only occurs when she's on pavement - seems to disappear when she walks on grass. We haven't found any obvious injury to her paw or leg. Wish us luck!
  3. I haven't had to go through this before, but felt like you and Ember could use a My mare tore a ligament in her leg - badly - a couple of years ago. I know people that have put down horses with her type of injury. My vet couldn't guarantee that she'd ever be sound again. I had to put her on stall rest. When I'd take her out for exercise, she'd act like a nut-case. I had to use a chain lead to prevent her from further injuring herself or me. It broke my heart to see my otherwise mellow horse act like that. I couldn't explain to her why it was all necessary. After 9 months (3 months stall rest and 6 months pasture rest), my mare is as good as ever. Animals have a tremendous ability to bounce back from injuries that would destroy us humans.
  4. So glad to hear Polli (and the rest of the crew) is back upstairs.
  5. Those pictures are PRICELESS! Thanks so much for sharing. That Polli sure is a strong little gal.
  6. I'm so glad to hear that Polli was able to get out to potty and finally has some food in her belly. She is a very lucky lady to have such a good family. Thanks so much for keeping us all updated.
  7. Oh Robin!!! I'm so sorry to hear this news. We had the pleasure of hearing Dr. Couto speak at our GPA meeting this past summer. If it's any consolation, he said that greys adapt extremely well to amputation. Dr. Couto and his staff are also available for consultations. There is hope! http://www.vet.ohio-state.edu/1872.htm
  8. I'm so sorry Robin! The only thing I have to offer is a big hug to you and Polli.
  9. Sending healing thoughts for Miss Polli!
  10. Yep, it's the same as ppa; just the chewable form. Marcia in SC Thanks for the clarification. I answered the survey now - no side affects, no other meds and no alternate therapies used. I agree with this statement.
  11. Our 7.5 y/o grey girl Darcy started having some incontinence issues a few weeks ago. Our vet put her on Proin. It seems to be working well with no noticeable side effects. Not sure if Proin is the same as PPA, so I didn't respond to the survey.
  12. We just give Interceptor to our greys once a month.
  13. Well, it turns out Darcy has a loose sphincter which has also caused some minor vaginitis. So... she's now on Proin and antibiotics (Simplicef). Anyone else have a grey with this issue?
  14. The past two nights, when our 7.5 y/o grey girl Darcy got up from her bed, we noticed a wet spot. In addition, her backside was wet. It wasn't a large spot. We assumed she had laid in the spot where one of our other greys had been eating a treat a short time before Darcy laid there. We thought it was just grey slobber. Last night was different. The bed was dry when Darcy got on it. She didn't move at all as DH and I ate dinner and watched TV. When I got the dogs up for our evening walk, there was a wet spot again. Darcy's backside and rear leg were wet. She hadn't been cleaning herself there, so we have no doubt that she wet the bed as she slept. Darcy is a very predictable grey when it comes to her potty habits. She normally only pees three times a day - morning, after work and before bed. Yesterday, DH noticed that she peed twice when he turned the dogs out in the yard after work. When I took them on their walk before bed, she also peed twice (in addition to the wet bed). She also woke DH up around 1 a.m. to go pee outside. I find it extremely odd that Darcy would wet her bed and then continue to lie in it. It's very unlike her. Darcy is extremely well housebroken. The one time she messed in the house it was because we missed her signals. She was very upset when it happened too. I assume she has a UTI, but do you think it might be something else like incontinence? The pee on the bed hardly had an odor. Other than peeing more, her eating/drinking habits have been normal. I'm taking her to the vet today either way at 5:30 p.m. I just wanted to get GT'ers opinions on this in the meantime.
  15. Cool - looking forward to meeting you both. Hubby (Regan) and I (Laura) will be at Wylie Wagg with Celeste (dark brindle) and Bonny (red fawn).
  16. My husband and I live in Centreville too (Cabells Mill)! We have three greyhounds - all adopted through GPA-NoVA (clicky). I know folks who have adopted from other groups too - we all try to support each other. You should visit the websites, go to M&Gs, etc. and find out what group you feel the most comfortable with. What works for one - doesn't work for all. For us, we liked the idea of a national group. We also liked that GPA-NoVA picks out a grey for you based on your application and home visit. We didn't feel confident that we'd make the best choice if we had to select our own - especially since neither of us had a dog since we were kids. Our group did an amazing job picking out greys that were perfect for us and our home - absolutely no regrets. GPA-NoVA is having a M&G this Saturday at the Fairfax Corner Wylie Wagg from 1-4 p.m. My husband and I will be there with two of our three greys. Feel free to stop in to say "hello."
  17. Well, if he thinks neutering dogs is bad he should watch a horse get gelded sometime. I witnessed a vet do this to a young colt at a barn I used to board at. She sedated the colt (not full anesthesia), laid him on the grass and then proceeded to yank his nuts out. Once she was done, the colt stood back up. It was pretty horrific to watch... makes me glad I have a mare. Looked like this... gelding.
  18. Welcome from Centreville! We have 3 grey girls - Bonny, Celeste and Darcy - from GPA-NoVA.
  19. DH and I ran into an old friend from the Coast Guard yesterday at a party. He was here in the DC area, but got transferred out to CA a few years ago. He's now back working in Northern VA (Ballston). We told him about you guys in Kodiak. He said that he heard Kodiak was nice. Guess the Coast Guard lies about it there so folks don't try to run off before getting there.
  20. Mosquitoes are naturally drawn to me. One of my horse friends turned me onto Cactus Juice. It's a natural product that actually works to keep mosquitoes away. I think it would be safe for dogs. Cactus Juice
  21. WOW - I'd want to turn right around too! That house reminds me of the slum my buddies and I rented our senior year of college at SUNY-Geneseo. Of course, all the off-campus houses looked like that. We chose it because it was within walking distance of all the bars and pizza shop. I still remember the horrified look on our parents when they helped us move in. Luckily, they were also there to help clean up the place with us. My roommates mother spent a full day just cleaning the kitchen which included getting rid of several bags of left over booze bottles. I'm pretty sure I would have the same tolerance for a place like that now that I'm in my mid-30s. Good luck guys!
  22. Couldn't vote since our current brand of dog food wasn't listed... Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice
  23. You should definitely see if you have a therapy pool near you. This is the one near us that our neighbors take Igor too - Northern Virginia Animal Swim Center.
